SSP increases from £95.85 to £96.35 a week in April, but unions say it is too little to live on.

Don't expect much sympathy from the sort of people who stigmatise anyone on benefits or furlough as a scrounger.

Very depressing seeing so many comments on this thread from people who seem to think that being poor and sick is a crime that people should suffer for.

Surely the last year has shown us that it's in everyone's interest to provide proper support to people who are ill so that they don't have to go into work and spread disease?

Yes it is a miserly small increase.

Even miserly small increases will be uncommon in these unusual times as many in the private & public sector get no increase at all, given they even (still) have job.

I thought SSP was supposed to be a safety net for a short period of passing illness, not cater for long standing ill-health, as such it's not intended to prop up a lifestyle, just be a backstop.
Your long standing ill-health is a chosen lifestyle then. I see - clown. Removed

The only way Tories learn is when they have direct personal experience of the immiserating effect of poverty. They lack the emotional intelligence to put themselves into the shoes of the people who are less fortunate than themselves and on whom they inflict their immoral fiscal policies. Left wing unions (which they all are) will always whinge at anything a more right wing government will do, regardless. If Labour aren’t in power all decisions are wrong, regardless as to whether the country can afford it or not.
Getting decent working conditions and pay is not a left wing thing. It should be the norm. The Government can always afford anything it wants to. It is a political choice on their part. The country was supposedly skint before Covid, so we had 10 years of austerity. Then they magically managed to find 250 billion to prop up Covid. Nobody should ever vote for this current Government. The Unions don't pay it, the Tax Payer does.
Unions like Labour are very good at spending other peoples money.
If they represented working people ( real people who get up and go out to work) and not a fictional group made up of all sorts of groups ( many not/never working).

A gambling firm boss paid herself £469 million last year whereas an essential worker like a nurse gets a 50p increase in SSP to £96.35.

Just yet another example of the deeply rotten "moral vacuum" society that Evil Tories create.

And yes Tory voters do get sick and go to NHS hospitals. Its fortunate for them that nurses and doctors don't sink to their level and treat them like everyone else.
