Booming drives, accurate wedges, unerring putts - when he is on song there is no more tuneful figure in the modern game than world number one Dustin Johnson, writes Iain Carter.

The old saying - Driving for show, putting for dough. As DJ said concentrate on 150 yards and in!
Except DJ hits it absolutely miles. Maybe not quite as far as Rory or Bryson, but certainly far enough!
The idea of drive for show putt for dough has been soundly debunked with the advent of accurate data/stats, certainly at the tour pro level anyway. I am sure DJ understands this, but when you're already one of the big hitters and more accurate with your driver than many too, then you can afford to focus on your short game.
Naturally talented and a laid back style, what is there not to like about DJ (apart from the spitting).
Couple of trains of thought on that. If he spends time preparing to make the putt and makes it, then it's probably faster. If he spends an age putting and keeps missing them, then that's a different story. My playing partner is slow in prep but he rarely misses his putts, and is pretty much faster on the greens than most...
He's not the worst, but the does take too long. Green books certainly don't help, along with interminable conversations with caddies. Make then read the greens themselves.

When DJ is in the zone he is relentless, the same could be said about JT, the Europeans will have their work cut out would like to see the young Scot BM have a decent tournament but I think RM has it in the bag ????????
Are you fishing for a nice Maksi for supper? ??

I’m going to hazard a guess here! DocuDrama can’t walk?
McIlroy press team on holiday and Iain had to go looking else where for a story?
I have got a lot of time for Dustin Johnson because he overcame some pretty bad personal problems some years back and returned to the golf scene in a quiet way without any drama. I would like him more if he refrained from spitting but at least he does not chew gum like a cow munching like some others. He has very good manners on the course especially on the greens and takes bad luck on the chin.
His spitting makes him unwatchable. And he also had a spat about match play etiquette with Na last week. Sorry not a likeable player.
There are some great American players. I hope Scotland can produce some more greats.
Yes, Kevin Na was quite right to pull him on taking that as good!
Kevin hadn’t given it and in match play you always wait for the nod.

Love his honesty, the guy is class, unlike some of the drivel from that other clown ??
DJ is a class act and tremendously consistent. Just wish he would be a little quicker on the greens! A “shoe-in” for top 5 at Augusta.
I lost any respect I had for Johnson when he couldn't even beat Bob the Burger last week.
Well there's a nice comment. I hope you're pleased with yourself.
Here he goes Leslie the 28 handicapper who tries to be smart by saying Bob the Burger.
Look son keep telling you, keep practicing at the crazy golf before you comment on proper golf.
Oh and how will Dustin survive knowing that you don’t have any respect for him?
Oh dear near, never mind.
Suppose your brain cells get lonely some mornings?

The usual drivel from Les each and every HYS LOL
Bet you lost part of yourself when Bob knocked out the world #1. Surprised to see you show your face to be honest!

DJ can crank it up big time! His laid back drive is on par with Rorys! When ever they’ve had mini drive competitions between them DJ has always beat Rory.
For his size those Rory is a beast!
For his size those Rory is a beast!
Well as long as he has the required accuracy then it is not for show.
Great article as usual Iain well done. But wasn't it a 7 iron from the fairway he hit out of bounds in 2011 rather than a tee shot?

Par for the course these days.
Perhaps McIlroy should read this article?
I couldn't believe it when i heard he was trying to get more speed in his swing when his wedge game and putting are so poor at the moment
....and yes as others have alluded to it is nice to see a headline associated with someone else other than Rory

Spot on.
Rory has lot the plot since 2014, why he felt the need to pump iron in the gym all day I'll never know. He wrecked his swing by building unnatural muscle mass. What for? He was striping the ball 300+ yds as a scrawny teenager and now he's lost a lot of his natural gift. Time to stay out of the gym and spend more time on the range and greens.

And yet you still have to bring him up ;)

BDC bulked up, can smash it off the tee, rarely on the fairway and relies in wedges.
I would love to lose the plot if i also became world number 1, won PGA tour player of the year and The Players. Yes, it's worryingly not worked for him in majors in recent years but I think we can be confident that's not due to bulking up or his swing if it's good enough to win the other events (plus a lot of others) mentioned since 2014.
The way he manages his game and his emotions is great to see. I love watching him just get on with it whether he is playing well or not you wouldn't know. Meanwhile, having to listen to constant emotional commentary from the likes of Bryson, Rahm, Spieth etc is very tiresome. You can tell from others when they are beaten too - McIlroy frequently. DJ's mental approach gives him the cutting edge.

Shame the guy is thicker than two short planks, but so long as he just wanders around and hits balls for a fortune then I guess it doesn't matter.
In a world where you can be anything, be nice, TheDarkHalf...
You must hate most other sportsmen who haven’t completed education of note due to chasing their professional dreams. Sound a bit bitter to me.
I saw an a golf commentator a few years ago say that the reason Johnson was so good is that there is not a lot going on between his ears so he simple does not over think what he is doing especially if it is as simple as hitting a ball. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.
Shame the guy is thicker than two short planks, but so long as he just wanders around and hits balls for a fortune then I guess it doesn't matter.
It's just an observation after seeing a few interviews with him - I don't have any kind of problem with the guy and he's an amazing golfer.
Its well known amongst Golf pro's and hardcore Golf fans that Dustin Johnsons "apathy" when it came to GS events had nothing to do with a lack of interest but more with a liking to certain "products" that create a feeling of energy and euphoria. Add to this a "John Terry / Wayne Bridge" situation which he was also involved in and the picture looks pretty clear. He was a A-hole.
john terry paid for the funeral of a young chelsea fan.a wonderful gesture
Nice to hear about someone succeeding without all the fuss.
Also, keeping it simple is often the key to doing well. Cut out the stuff that is just a distraction.
Look at Thierry Henry too. When he shot first time on instinct he barely ever missed. Stop to think and he barely ever scored.
See ball, hit ball, repeat.

Oh, I see. In that case, I’ve fixed your post:

There, that’s better!

Nicklaus, Faldo, Woods......Johnson? Can he become the 4th player in history to defend his Masters title? He certainly has every chance.
What do you reckon peeps?

As the Tv personality and radio DJ Mo Gilligan says, and indeed what many people from the BAME community have said. It's so important to have people who look like you to relate to. And thats my favourite thing about golf. Most of the players on the course look like me so I find it easier to identify with them

I found it pretty quickly when he got mauled by Victor Perez.
A real reality check that was.
Regarding Johnson though, drawing with MacIntyre and losing to Na really does highlight his lack of form at the moment and I'll be surprised to see him seriously contend this year.

Most people's favourites are those with flaws. That is why Steve Davis was less popular than Jimmy White, why Mickelson was very popular whist Woods was not readily likeable. No one likes things being predictable hence why with this build up Johnson will miss the cut.
What's not to love about this man's ability to produce amazing golf . He reminds me of a thoroughbred waiting to hit the gas in the last few furlongs just as the others around him thinks its a close finish. ?? . Genuine good luck to all the UK and Ireland players. Cmon boys we are rooting for you.

Somewhat strange article given his current form which is all over the place, guess that's why he about turned on his invitation in San Antonio this week. Would not put any money on him this year doing anything, or Rory for that matter!

Love an each way, so here’s the 5 donkeys who will probably miss the cut:
Morikawa: 25/1
Berger 33/1
Casey: 40/1
Fitzpatrick: 50/1
Oosthuizen: 80/1

Wondering what the number of fans will be each day and what effect it will have on viewing, was very eery last year...
Meant to be going to Monday practice at some point, got lucky in the ballot for 2020... no fans in November.. balloted out of the ballot (and couldn’t travel anyway) for this April. Still, raided the online merch shop again.

Tell me about it. First 3 days of golf since being allowed to and I’ve hit my irons like a dream, smashed the driver and threatened to hole every putt I’ve looked at.
Only one on each day though and turned up yesterday missing greens in reg for fun.

Now the fun comps have happened the serious golf is about to start and the real pointers to the 12 Ryder Cup hopefuls. I can see the younger tour members rising to the top (Perez) . Close to last chance saloon for the likes of Poulter/stenson and I think Westwood will have peaked and not contend once the longer courses are played.
Yeah because The Players and Arnold Palmer Invitational are Micky mouse events with average fields.

Not a patch on the most entertaining and charismatic man in golf, Phil Mickelson. If it wasn’t for Phil Mickelson the sport would be a bit of a joke.
Phil is literally a joke, more ability than pretty much anyone in the history of the game and what a guy with it. The crowd interactions, the calf activation thing, the aviators,
the hellacious seeds, all the Dave Pelz stuff back in the day, so no wonder he's most fans favourite. Just wish he could keep his driver on the planet when he hit's bombs.
