All-rounder Sam Curran will get "better and better", according to stand-in England captain Jos Buttler.
Sam Curran is the kind of player England needs. He's got the heart of a lion and a fighter!
Considering that the Butlers, Moeens and Eoins are not getting it done, Sam and Tom would be good hail Marys
That is the x factor that makes Sam such a valuable asset. Think Botham and Stokes and lionhearts and fighters. Curran has that about him as today obviously showed.
Potential England captain.
He might look young but there's a seriously mature head on those shoulders. Well played Sam, great knock.
As a Scot I must say - this engerland team are on hell of a unit. They never know when they are beat.
Credit to them
Just grateful their footie and Reuther teams can’t show the same commitment and dedication or they would be world beaters.
Smashing series in India it perked up the nation in dark times.
And they had Kohli on the run a few times which was great to see. Well played

Why bother spraying your inane remarks all over this thread?

I am surprised that you noticed as your grasp of cricket is so feeble.
It appears to me that you haven't seen some of the games he has won (sometimes single-handedly) in the IPL, and also against India in 2018, with the bat AND ball

What a cynic you are kate. You need to get a life.
Yes it was great for Sam, our number 8 batter who is a bowling allrounder, to take us all the way down to the wire. It was fantastic to watch.
Disappointed with the result and there should be questions about the batting from the senior players however to focus on us losing entirely is incredibly disrespectful to the other team.

Moeen has not exactly done badly considering he has been ill and not had much cricket
Lessons to take from this odi series, check which Indian bowlers gave England difficulty and then ask where Chris Woakes was
That's like asking the C grade student if he had more difficulty in math or history

You can add his Warwickshire team mate Olly Stone in too. Caused them a lot of issues before being dropped in the Tests. He bowls around the same speed as Wood and with much more control than Topley who keeps being given chances to show he’s not quite up to it
He must be sleeping in English winter. When he gone home it not our head ache
More specifically, investigate the reasons for his glaring omission and which figures are behind it.
Problems run deeper than batting line ups imo. They can get away with this batting approach against lesser opposition, but quality sides will adapt rather quickly. Fact remains that they are yet to win a single ODI series against a quality opposition since they got lucky in the WC finals; the only series win they have recorded is against Ireland. Lost to Aus, India and drawn against SA.
Kate GF. Morgan wasn't playing.

What players are doing at the moment is what is relevant. What they may do in the future or what they have already done in the past, good or bad, isn't really important.
Let's hope so because his bowling is definately not up to the subcontinent yet
Let's see how much he bowls in the IPL and when
He's just a bit pop gun at this level and there are clearly better and more skilful bowlers available
England are still enthralled by the cult of the allrounder in every format
Today it nearly paid off but in T20 it's not a thing really - top 6 should do it all

I love how the English take a positive out of being spanked by India in so many ways! Yes I’m South African!!
No need to tell us your propensity for onanism, your comment had already confirmed it
They weren't spanked. The two white ball series were neck and neck.
Y'up we can tell ,clueless and classless as per the norm ,congrats on being nowhere .
SA would have been white washed by india.
Strange, you sound more Australian than South African.
Sam Curran is an incredible talent and would have taken a lot of confidence from this performance even if he couldn’t take England over the line today. He deserves his place in this Eng team. Also another young player was incredible today- Rishabh Pant. Pant is 23 and Curran is 22. Hope to see these two doing great for years to come.
Wise words Ananth. I have long been an admirer of Pant. Like Stokes, he is a player the the opposition fear and it’s always a relief to get him out.
Pant need to stop yelling and screaming every time the ball hits a batsman's pads. Has a lot of growing up to do.
Sam nearly always comes up with the goods with bat or ball, but he was always first to be dropped from the Test team. Pant looks like player of the year. Consistent batting and excellent keeping.
I was confused seeing all the criticism of Curran earlier in the series - anyone who's watched him in white ball cricket, especially the IPL, knows he's the kind of batsman you want to be able to come in at 7 or 8. To have such a good all-rounder coming in later gives the higher order confidence to put on a bigger score.
Don’t feed the troll KATE. If everyone ignores him (Im sure it’s a he) he will have to return to the football board where he belongs
Maybe if we all report him / her they will get banned. It'll take 30 seconds of your time and be a seriously good investment!
I pondered this theory too. I wondered if Kate G F could be a misogynist typing ill-informed nonsense trying to encourage others to bleat sexist comments in reply about female players/presenters/fans etc. ??

Test match pitches were pay back!!
Expect same when India visits

Sam was the reason, why england could beat India 4-1 in test series last time around
Always whingeing about the pitches, toss, heat etc. So called world champions well beaten despite having won almost all tosses.
The test match pitches during India's visit to England in 2018 were absolutely disgraceful..
It was same pitch for both nations...so stop lamenting
A wicket that did not favour India. I wonder what went wrong?
Absorbing game. On tenterhooks during the last 5 overs. Worst was the last 4 balls.
I’m afraid JB is trying to be nice, but it comes across as quite patronising. When has Sam Curran ever put in a match winning performance for England, I can’t recall! I do hope he kicks on from here, but like Sam Billings who’s now approaching 30, he’s had countless opportunities. This won’t be lost on a number of equally good or better domestic all rounders who can’t get a gig!
Sam Curran was the game changer(2 MoM) for Eng in the test series in England when India last visited and he was only 18 then. He is only 22 now and the talent is there for everybody to see. He can quite easily play ahead of Moeen in this England batting lineup.
8 is the answer, of which hes batted in 3, your recollection is pretty poor
Disagree with your comments about Sam Curran, as he has potential particularly as a batting all rounder. There are others who deserve a chance and probably time to leave out Moeen, Sam Billings, Jordan and others who have been around for a few years
Alan, this was only Sam’s 8th ODI. Hardly classes as “countless opportunities” does it?
Asking for a friend- your highest senior score with a bat in any form of league cricket?
"Countless opportunities" - that was his 8th ODI. No need to do the counting; it's in the report.
England have just won a World Cup based on the tactic of picking proper bowlers - now we’re back pinning our hopes on bits and pieces all rounders.
This innings has guaranteed he’ll be wasting a spot in the side for the next 3 years - and it didn’t even win the game!

Sam Curran can bat at 7 as a batting all rounder. Could also use Joe Root as a 2nd spinner, as he is no worse than Moeen. At 22 it is too early to discard Sam Curran but I agree he should be used more as a backup bowler
Perhaps the purpose was to see which "bits and pieces all rounders ", we can mould into proper bowlers , whilst retaining the ability to score runs, weird thought , i know .

Yet again, let’s blame Moeen...pathetic.
He has not performed well for quite some time. I fail yo understand he gets picked to play for England.
tbf, he bowled very well, yes he may have 'lacked game awareness', but that is how the management encourage them to play, and I don't think he was the only one either...
Kid deserved a century and probably the game... well played

Far from the finished article but he is only 22. Can we dispense with Billings though he has had so many chances and never delivers.
Turned down 7 singles to win the game...
and if he took a single and Wood got out ,what was he doing exposing wood !!

Rishabh Pant has some matches where he drops a couple and gets out in single figures but is obviously a talent worth investing time/experience in. Same for Sam Curran. They have 8/10 years to peak. I think I trust the cricketing mind of Dhoni who opens the bowling and batting with Curran over your half-baked mind farts.

S Curran take note - which is the easiest side of the wicket to hit boundaries? as we saw Stokes do so 2 days ago - so all of those deliveries he faced (some of which would have been `wides`) he should be stepping inside the line and ``helping it on its way` (as Ben did !)
It`s not rocket -science ! - a great knock - but awareness at `the death` is what wins the game and the glory
Buttler ???????

Ok it was a great innings from Curran but his bowling still leaves a lot to be desired. An opening bowler getting carted for more than 8 per over and only trusted to bowl half his allocation says it all.

Excellent point!
Curran backed himself to bring it home helped by some poor Indian fielding. However I think he should have trusted Wood more and rotated the strike with him.
Who's to say if they didn't take those missed singles they may have got over the line. Small margins.
Curran lost them the game. Wood was batting confidently. He was dropped a couple of times got lucky. Almost got wood injured with his indecisive running. The reporters and fans have to get a positive out of a complete disastrous your of England.
Terrible game management by Curran. Turned down 7 runs. Then decided to start taking them.
No sorry, he did the right thing by keeping the strike and getting the majority of the runs himself. If he gave the strike to Wood who got out a couple of balls later you would be saying the opposite.
I agree, If he had took all of the singles that he let go and trusted Wood then we would have possibly won. Seeing as we lost anyway we had nothing else to lose and everything to gain. Good effort by the young man though.
Yes Paul. You are right. Wood was solid and it was only Sam falling over that caused the run out. Great show though Sam
Hes a goodish bowler and a goodish batsman but I can't see him really making a huge impact with the ball or bat on a regular basis. Decent player to have in the squad though.
22. Give it time. Some of the greatest players/captains around seem to rate him. They're probably onto something.
He'll end up batting at 6 and bowling only when conditions suit.....and will win matches for England....taking over from Stokesy!!!

I reckon it's Tim Paine.

I suppose Steve Smith sort of started out as a bowler and goodish lower order batsman!
And Sam will only get better. What a remarkable young player!

Good example, and Pietersen started as an average off-spinner
I captained my year at a school with hopeless sports teams, and look at me now... I'm commenting on a cricket formun on global information network!
Lol, I remember one commentator saying something about Steve Smith being unlikely to be successful batsman because he looked awkward at the crease (game 4 or 5 for Australia) - how wrong was he....
If you follow Sam's bowling figures closely you'll see that he is actually, on average, reasonably economical. He also a knack of taking 'that' wicket or making the breakthrough when it's needed. He is a very good bat with power and technique - remember he was Man of the Series in in Asia recently. He is NOT average as some on this thread seem to think.

Sam Curran batted well today but we should not go over the top. At times this Winter it has looked like he is pretty useful in all disciplines but not necessarily good enough at any one to really guarantee a place in the best 11. However, he is still very young and still needs to be given lots of chances to further improve. Encouraging today- well played.
A wise comment. English reporters and fans, be it in football or cricket have a habit of making superstars out of mediocre players. Remember Sam was dropped twice and had zero pressure on him when he came to bat.
I suppose Steve Smith sort of started out as a bowler and goodish lower order batsman!

Sam Curran is a decent player, no doubt about it but I still can't get my head around why England go into these important games without there best players. Rotation is one thing but Chris Woakes hasn't played a game for about 6 months and he has to be the most accurate of the English bowlers available. Look at the Indians there best bowler is not particularly fast but he is accurate.
Sam Curran is borderless, he transcends all continents and countries..

I think Woakes has been hidden from India ...the less they face him the tougher it will be for them when it really matters .... can't think of any other reason why he hasn't been played
Morgan is very set in his ideas. Some faces fit, others don’t. The likes of Tom Curran and Chris Jordan will get whacked around the park time after time bowling half-track at 80mph while Woakes and Stone don’t get a look in when they both bowl with far greater control and intelligence

Funny, but the CSK set-up have no qualms about building him up. Does some great things for them, too. England, as ever, are slow to catch on...
I said this before
