I appreciate the calls for unity, which is needed more than ever, but we need to do more than flying flags more to mend divisions.

More effective would be to regularly call out those sowing division, like some politicians and media outlets who profit from divide and rule, and ensure reform is achieved in turn.

More effective still would be, once and for all, to stop the pretence that "divisions" are something new. At no time ever, even in time of war, did everyone in the UK share exactly the same views and opinions about everything.

Division is no more than diversity of thought and opinion and we are forever being told how wonderful diversity is, so let's celebrate it.

Like the BBC for example. There are many media outlets that are simply providing an outlet or antidote for the frustrated, those driven mad by PC culture and identity politics, which the BBC is at the absolute root of! In France it it is perhaps easier for the masses to support a symbol that represents opposition to autocracy and the overthrowing of the aristocracy. In Britain the flag is rooted in the exact opposite. Endorsement of monarchy, empire, colonialism, privilege. It’s a much more divisive concept as very few feel the benefits of such a system.

The flag of St George combined with the Scots flag, when the 2 countries united. The Scottish Monarch taking on the English Crown becoming the first British Monarch hence the whole union flag business
The flag of St George was the English crown's flag and covered England, Wales & Cornwall under Elizabeth 1st. The last English Monarch, after which we were all ruled by a Scotsman & his descendants

Knee jerk reaction to rise of Celtic identity. At least there is a distinction between an English and British flag, unlike the illogicality of the UK and English anthem being the same. A Welsh or Scottish Olympic winning athlete stands for God save the Queen when the very same becomes the chant of the opposition in international rugby, for example. Blurring of England and GB identity not helpful.

Go to America or Spain and their flags are everywhere - and that's seen as a sign of patriotism.

But if the UK flags out flag then it's not patriotic - it's racist and xenophobic.

Just like the Scotland, Welsh and Irish flags are patriotic - but England's flag is not.

"it's racist and xenophobic".

Are you Stewart Lee, by any chance?

Oh yes, we all remember all the racist flag-wavers who suddenly appeared when the Olympics were on.

Or perhaps we're embarrassed by what we have become, and don't feel particularly patriotic after what has happened over the last few years.
It comes down to history. Flying the British flag is like flying a swastika sign. Such were the acts of the British empire. Made Britain the favourite country on the planet. Of course the German queen helps Removed

It is not racist of xenophobic to fly the Union Jack or St George's Cross but it's seen as such due to the unfortunate associations with football hooligans & some far right nuts. The Scots, Irish and Welsh can all wear their flags without reproach throughout the UK but try wearing either on Princes St and you're in trouble.

I just watch their elections where both side compete to see who is more American when both sides are American. Its pathetic. I've always had pride in the flag... but the way it was used alongside racism and xenophobia in the leave campaign, it's hard not to conflate the two.

Unfortunately Scotland has been blighted by the obsession of the NATS and their flags - the Saltire is now seen as a political symbol and no longer as the national flag. Most moderates are not obsessed with flags

The US and the EU are proud to display their flag at every opportunity. When we wish to do it it is frowned upon. We should be proud of our flag!

You mean issues like censorship, cancel culture, the hatred of white males, virtue signalling and the stereotyping of anyone with a different point of view? I totally and whole heartedly agree with you.
