Unfortunately Lee was his normal accurate self off the tee ... still good to see him at the top end of the leaderboard again though.
So glad to see a great win from a golfer who has been a victim of our totally political correct society .
What a lot of nonsense.
repeating an earlier comment, to give a different perspective: All of us- and especially people in the public eye- need to think hard about negative stereotyping .
Likening yourself to a gay person after a bad shot is homobphobic, even if you don't mean it that way.

Hardly a victim is he? The likelihood is that he is homophobic however much he “sincerely”
apologises. Why did he apologise if it wasn’t wrong in the first place?

Victim? He was allowed to play!
I agree richard you cant even talk to yourself these days without being scrutinised by the pc brigade
lee westwood-super furry golfer
Hard luck Lee, pipped for the second week running. Hope you can go on to win the Masters
It's never going to happen.
Always the bridesmaid never the bride springs to mind. Lee can never seem to get it over the line in big comps.
Well deserved win for Thomas. Westwood paid the price for a poor start but that's some good playing at this late stage in his career.
Some fine golf played over the last few weeks with the Masters looming.

Well done JT. It was already looking ominous after his score on Saturday. But golf is a game of inches and the shots didn't come off today for Lee. At least he got his own back on DeChambeau!
Westwood will be in the Ryder Cup team this year for sure.
Westwood will be in the Ryder Cup team this year for sure.
Well of course he will...a bit like Poulter, it,s amazing how they can magic up some form when they really must.
And btw, im a Westwood fan...just saying it as it is.
And btw, im a Westwood fan...just saying it as it is.
DeChambeau shot a better score than Westwood in the final round - wouldn't call that getting his own back since neither won.
Just looking at the potential Amercian Ryder Cup team and I must admit I'm a tad concerned. Some serious talent, it's just whether they can gel as a team.
Disappointed Westy couldn’t do it but pleased for Thomas who has had a difficult couple of months. I bet some of his sponsors wish they had stuck with him.
The World has gone mad
The World has gone mad
He brought it all on himself. Every time he's opened his mouth recently he's made a fool of himself.
Another who will be happy to indulge in the cringeworthy 'banter' with Woods.

As I said earlier I have never been a fan of Westwood but it would be churlish not to admire his recent performances and the character and attitude he has shown.
However he didn't have it in him to win a major in his 20s/30s so I doubt he will be able to do it in his 40s.
In addition he doesn't carry the luck of his mate Darren Clarke!
I wouldn't grudge him a major but don't see it happening!

JT was immense. Bet he sh*t himself with that drive on 18 though. Glad Westy is regaining his form on world level. Hopefully he can get over the line soon, who knows with Majors around the corner.
Absolutely, must take inspiration from Darren Clarke and his Open win. One day...
westwood has not got the balls to win a major bottle job when it matters
once rahm gets his putter working the wins will start coming again ????
I'd would have found the water on 18 ! No messing about there ! Not just finding the fairway like these proper golfers do :)
I would normally agree but he is looking genuinely solid with the putter and is clearly starting the ball on the right line. He knows how to play Augusta. Definitely worth an E/W bet.
Westwood has played fantastic golf for the last two weeks in the USA and to walk away with back to back 2nd place is very harsh. Gutted for him, but he can hold his head high.
What's the point in playing "fantastic golf" if you never win a big one?
He aint got the minerals to win a tournament like this. Sad but true
He aint got the minerals to win a tournament like this. Sad but true
At his age, he’s playing fantastic. Showing some of the ‘big hitters’ how the good, solid golfer can (sort of) win the day.
If his putting and short game were as good as they are now a few years back, he would most probably won a major or two. However, as Phil is finding out, time does catch up with you and never going to be easy beating the younger players over 4 days.
Well done Westy!!
Well done Westy!!
Lee westwood is almost like Typical Scottish heartache in football. Always close but never quite makes it and always seems to find new ways to blow it.
Never quite makes it? Try reading up on his record. I'd love to be that unsuccessful
Could not have put it better myself.....only replacing 'football' with rugby. Living with the combined psyche of saint and sinner will never make you a winner!
That is ridiculous statement, he is playing with top players where Scottish Football is for amateurs
Disappointed Westy couldn’t do it but pleased for Thomas who has had a difficult couple of months. I bet some of his sponsors wish they had stuck with him.

Absolutely
You are everything that’s wrong with today’s society, be angry and annoying somewhere else.
What a sad person you are
I think you're confusing Westwood and McIlroy I'm afraid.
Yet I find myself laughing at YOU ... ??
Steady on old man!
Yeah picking up $1.7 million for a week'a work and beating all but one of the best players in the world. What a joke.
Do you know anything about his golfing record? Do you know anything about golf ...or any sport? Too many folks like you in the world these days. Grow up
I wish I was a big joke and earnt what he has over the last two weeks, especially with no caddie fees
Well done Lee Westwood.
Even more well done Justin Thomas.
But the most well done of all was TPC Sawgrass... what a course !!

Which unlike the UK's Members only elitist championship venues you can actually pay you money [ it's not cheap but you are buying history ] and take your chance , and may I add from ANY colour tee you chose . this applies to ALL Courses the US Open is played on , and many more .
Ps played it 5 years ago round in 110 strokes ;-]
Westwood is back to his best which is slightly not good enough .

Great effort by Westy and Bryson but if every player in the world today were playing their best then nobody would be able to beat Justin Thomas.
15 under par for the last 35 holes, on that course in those conditions, having struggled on Thurs, and then again on Friday to make the cut.
Very very impressive and thanks to him and Sky Golf for wonderful coverage again.

Glad Justin won - it served as a two fingers to the politically correct sheepish corporations who cancel at even the whisper of controversy. You can't utter a breath in this pathetic society any more without being censored.
Seeing as you are bringing pc into this......all of us- and especially people in the public eye- need to think hard about negative stereotyping .

I’d normally agree with you.
Except that comparing yourself to a gay person because you’ve hit a bad shot plainly isn’t very nice.
And kids copy their idols mannerisms, so it’s something we could do without.
He apologised, and we all move on!

Totally agree, Ralph Lauren corporation two faced bigotry who have their products made in sweat shops in China for a few cents .
...and the BBC still have to bring ‘that incident’ up in their write up. What did that ‘do called’ news ha e to do with Justin’s win yesterday. Zero...nothing.
Well put Remolino. No doubt we’ll be labelled homophobic for being against the ‘pc corporations’. Pathetic state of the world that we live in.

Nice to see that I’m not the only one thinking the same thing.
Well said, they’ll ban golfers from using an Iron next....
You have to remember, the individual can’t say boo to a goose nowadays.
But when they do, you can bet your bottom dollar (all 2.6m of them) that the media, especially the BBC) will bring up ANY perceived negativity at ANY opportunity.
Have I said too much...???? :-D

Couldn’t agree more - life is like treading on eggshells, society is actually doing a great job teaching people to be offended. It was l lazy comment that’s all, he meant no offence - why don’t we concentrate efforts on teasing out the real problems in society rather than waiting for public figures to trip up & then hanging them out to dry.
Lots of touchy feely people seem to not agree with you on this one. Here's what Shane MacGowan thought of the whole nonsense when his lyrics were being censored https://youtu.be/otVTYS1fR6c
What he said a month ago whilst putting was unacceptable.
well said
He wasn't censored. His comments had consequences.
I trust you will write to your MP to object to government plans to keep people quiet then? https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-56391988
Thx Remo - Thomas admitted he was wrong, but seemed confused about whether he'd have said the same thing if he was sure a mic wasn't there. And perhaps you could tell us which insults & cheap jibes you find acceptable, send them off to PGA & USPGA? Lots of neutral terms he could learn to shout at himself (meathead, chump, wazzock?!), but using that one hints of a longterm problem.
It’s not fingers to anyone. It’s a game of golf. Not gammons v wokes.
Spot on!
The Sky team have been stirring this up as well!
They’ve kept saying he’s been through a tough time(meaning his one word against himself) yet failed to mention he lost his Grandad which has been the only thing on Thomas’s mind! I don’t think he cared one bit about this media which hunt and rightly so!

I forgot about his cus word. JT is one of the good guys showed everyone he’s human like the rest of us. Tiger, Garcia have done a lot worse after missing short putts.
Unfortunately despite his many Thai opens and other wins around the world Lee Westwood does not win big tournaments ( no majors, no world gold championships , no players, no pga at wentworth etc etc ,) but still nice to see him enjoying himself on the course again
More than you then!!
He won’t be enjoying himself right now, that is one he should of won
Is that the Mcllroy who has won all those tournamnets iuncluding Majors?Just asking
" I have been trying to hit the ball like Bryson DeChambeau and my golf swing has fallen to pieces "
Really?
There is nothing that comes out of that mans mouth worth listening to.

I was in hysterics at. What a thing to say.
I saw 'Bob' missed the cut also and probably spent the weekend ordering room service while wishing he had entered the Qatar Open instead..

Unfortunate for Westwood, but he didn't play well enough in the final round.
He has set himself up for a go at the Fedex Cup though with his high finishes.
He would be better off playing PGA Tour tournaments now and trying to maintain his position in the Fedex Cup standings. No point coming back onto the European Tour except for the Scottish Open, the BMW PGA and the Open.

It's never going to happen.
I certainly wouldn't argue against a top 10 finish but I just feel there will always be someone just that bit better than him out there.

Whilst Lee Westwood, going around, playing great golf, says playing with Bryson is a breath of fresh air, our 4 times major winner from Northern Ireland is saying that if the way Bryson is playing is the way the game is going ( who on earth at this level would say that other than it ), then he will try to play that way too.
Amongst all the rubbish, that's the worst?

Feel for Lee Westwood. Great guy, great golfer. Close today and still playing good golf - long may it continue, even if people keep writing him off because of his age!
i think people write him off because he has never been able to finish things off one way or the other - often grabbing defeat from the jawas of victory. however i do think there are great signs over the past 2 weeks that he has conquered his demons.
Remember Mickelson was a nearly man for ages until he won his first Masters! 3 weeks to go!

As pleasing on the eye as she is, Helen Storey's greatest talent for Lee must surely be keeping him in a happy place on the course. He clearly relaxes with her on the bag.
But could he do even better with an experienced caddy? Whatever, he's happy.

A shout out for Shane Lowry who seems like a very decent fella and definitely has a good game of golf in him.
Also impressed with Russ Knox and Marty Laird who made the cut whilst Bob packed his bags as he continues to shoot scores in the 70s every round, although not quite 80 yet.
It's a brutal Tour to be playing on.
A special mention to Viktor's mum who gave his son the 2 shot penalty too.

He should have done the decent thing and disqualified himself, I'm sure the powers that be will keep an eye on him.....as they say once a cheat always a cheat ????
I don't want to discourage Bob too much so I'll go easy on him this week. I think he could get manage to make an honest living as a club pro if he puts his mind to it.
So frustrating watching Lee Westwood, he's got the game, got the skill, just hasn't got the bottle in the big moments.
I don’t think anyone is disagreeing that it was homophobic- intent or not. I guess most of us would allow someone to make a sincere apology and move on than to hold it over him. If he does something similar in the future that’s a different story. Just my view.
That may or may not be the case, but it is also very clearly a private matter which should not have seen the light of day. I see very little virtue in destroying people for such occurrences and am always mindful of the saying "let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
Boring , sick of having it rammed down my throat
That’s a real shame - so often the last pairing on Sunday watch each other rather than the rest - LW didn’t have his best game - I don’t know where this will take his OWGR - twenty something? - nearly 48 but nowhere near playing with the old boys. Well played Justin Thomas

Calm down ladies, your looking to much into what king RM said, it's his short iron play that needs addressing, he will sort it out as that's what great players do.
I would be more concerned about norways young Victoria, missing the cut and looking out of sorts in front of a small crowd, I hate to say I told you so ????????

yes I agree, Spud. otherwise you end up with a cancel culture. i think many of us, especially 20 years ago would think nothing of using a neatative word as he did. The important thing it to highlight it, learn from it and move on.
Just finishing in the top 10 of a PGA tournament is so so difficult..... to finish 2nd two weeks on the trot in fields like these is world class so well done Lee Westwood. Most people have no comprehension of how difficult these courses are compared to a standard club course..really is a matter of inches and the skill on show reflects the hours put in...congratulations Justin Thomas - unbelievable
Westwood has unfortunately bottled it again, no coincidence he's never won a major.
Somebody had to shoot 64 and 68 to take him down by 1 shot this weekend.
His earned more money with one putt on the 18th than you will earn in your entire life haahah
He shot level par on that course. Hardly bottling it
Oh no, no, no Geordie...
Claiming that sports stars are role models is a cheap and nasty way of enforcing oppressive attitudes. I learnt my moral from what my parents taught me and the way that they behaved, I did not need to look anywhere else for guidance.
Quite so Andrew. That you have presently 30 neg marks to 12 likes suggests lots on here are confused, or maybe bigoted themselves. Thomas admitted he was wrong, but seemed confused about whether he'd have said the same thing if he was sure a mic wasn't there. Lots of neutral terms he could learn to shout at himself (cloth-head, chump, wazzock?!), but using that one hints of a longterm problem.
Brilliant stuff from Thomas - thoroughly deserved win. He seems like a nice lad, too. Shame the interviewer made him cry asking about his grandfather. No need to upset him when he's pulled off one the biggest wins of his career.
Amazing isn,t it....people can criticise & condemn him over unintentional negative stereotyping and that people "may" be offended.....yet the same media can deliberately ask a question to intentionally distress him about a dead family member.
It,s complete & utter hypocrisy.
It,s complete & utter hypocrisy.
Agree, that was not a good moment, what do these interviewers think they are trying to achieve? I have no desire to be dragged along by them in to JT's private and personal life. Very unprofessional. Well done Lee, to come within one shot over four days on that course is superb golf, one chap did it in one shot less, no big deal. BDC & JT dropped 11 shots over four days, LW dropped 6, 4 on Sunday
I see Westwood has a female caddie. How woke!
I'm looking forward to the day we see mixed race transsexual and black female genderqueer caddies. Removed

JT deserved win and maybe corps such as RL will regret severely reprimanding rather than hastily dispensing with a decent guy who made a mistake. Titleist will now get the marketing boosts with one or two other sponsors! Westy didnt quite get over line but great to see him so happy on course with his "caddie." Great viewing overall and a few fans back too.

OK. He may have not won a "Biggie" yet ... but, what a charming man. Him and that Major winning pal of his teaming up for the Ryder Cup on numerous occasions ... memorable. Is it me through?. Up until just now it was being posted as a two shot victory?. Is the red wine kicking in?.
sawgrass golf club welcomes careful drivers
5 year exemption and 3 years for majors would have been huge for him, such a shame, beating Bryson and still falling short

Good coverage from Sky, but they need to get rid of McGinley.
He’s so clueless, he frequently had me yelling at the TV.
He seemed utterly oblivious to how close Thomas came to driving into the water on 18, despite all the close-ups of Thomas’s relieved reaction.

Agreed. The ball hit an old divot, you can see by the puff of sand that kicked up. Was a huge duck hook that he got away with, but that’s the break you get in golf.
At least he’s not Ken Brown.

Fully agree. Talks rubbish at 100 mph seemingly without drawing breath. Constantly contradicts himself. Irritating!
Some things never change, knew he wouldn't get the job done.

King? You said the stars were aligned and it was in the bag for the bottler, I must remember to delete your posts.
It was just a little painful to watch as Westwood got ahead on his downswing for too many drives and long irons.may have been a tad tired. Still a wonderful effort and as mentioned earlier he looks as if he is enjoying himself . I saw the video from 1997 when as a very fresh faced boy he beat Greg Norman in the Aus,Open. He has been at the top a long time. And seems a nice person.
TPC Sawgrass, Bay Hill, Concession, Riviera - can we please, as fans, have the players play these sorts of courses vs the -27 dross we’re subjected to in order to satisfy sponsors.
Another cracking tourney.
Another cracking tourney.
All these Florida courses are what I call bull dozer courses with not one natural feature about them. All the shots going into the water hazards may be fun for the viewers but I would hate to be a member of any of them . But I totally agree that the normal PGA tour courses are many shades worse than being dull.
Another magnificent performance from Westwood he just came up short Thomas played that bit better overall. That takes nothing away from Westwood who must go into this years majors with high hopes it will fall for him soon.
This. Why sky turn to him in these big events is beyond me.
I think you're confusing Westwood and McIlroy I'm afraid.
Most overrated British player has to be Tommy Fleetwood. Still hasn't won on the PGA Tour.
For all the hate that McIlroy gets at least he has won the quadruple of a Major, a WGC event, the Players, and the Fedex Cup. Not many have achieved that.

To be honest I don't know what he was thinking at that point.
We all know when we have to move our ball ( 1 and a half feet from the hole in this case ) that it needs to go back where it came from when the playing partner stops faffing about.
Viktor was -2 at the time and looked like the favourite to win this. Then his mum rings and those 2 shots cost him the title.
Mac has changed his swing?

Having watched Spieth over the last month, it is clear he is this generation's Luke Donald
His lack of distance means he has to be so accurate off the tee and with his approach shots. And the way most of the PGA Tour courses are these days it is very difficult to stay *that* accurate for a sustained period of years
He has the touch, but not the distance for most of the big tournaments

Similarly, having watched Fitzpatrick, he is always going to struggle to win on the PGA Tour because he isn't a birdie machine. He doesn't make enough birdies to get to -20 that is usually necessary to win on the PGA Tour.
There are some tough courses where his 'grind it out' style of play could prosper, but more often than not they don't appear on the PGA Tour.

Having watched Spieth over the last month, it is clear he is this generation's Luke Donald

Nope. But Morikawa is another one who has to stay 'dialled in' consistently. He drops by a small margin and he is screwed on the PGA Tour.
Look at his trackman stats. Morikawa's efficiency is off the charts. But it is going to be damn difficult for him to stay that efficient for a long period of time.

Great final day, gutted for Westwood didn’t happen for him today but still under par on a tough track and he’s playing some fantastic golf at the minute. Left a lot of youngsters who think they can play this game in his wake over the last couple of weeks. Congratulations to JT deserved his win
