What a game! By far the best contest of the tournament. Happy with the result but wouldn’t have begrudged the French a win if they’d edged it. Also excellent officiating by the Match Officials team, set their expectations for the players, let the game flow and got the decisions correct when needed. Wayne Barnes and his team had a good game earlier too.

Barnes is definitely number 1 now that Nigel has retired but I have to say Andrew Brace was superb today. Explained decisions at all times and most of all was completely consistent (unlike a certain Frenchman last week). As an England fan would be more than happy for him to ref every game going forwards. Cracking game BTW.

Wow! We do like making life interesting!! A much better performance; importantly, much more disciplined. A rip-roaring first half from both, enthralling for ANY fan, regardless of allegiance. Second half a bit scrappy, but still tense & absorbing. A slender, skinny win for ENG. A shame for a terrific FRA side that they're not still in with a chance of the GS, but they can still take the 6N...

Partly because key players had not actually played competitively for weeks. Also tactics changed and team were more flexible on the park.

Still issues for coaching team to work on particularly counter attacking from deep where Malins inherited some of Daly's recent hesitancy.

Great place kicking from both kickers.

Much better from England, but still a lot of work to do. Which of these players will be OK for the world cup? The Vinipola brothers both looked unfit and Farrell was almost invisible (which was an improvement). England not at their best this 6N but, despite the inevitable thumbs down, I still have faith in EJ. I think he’s a very good 4 year cycle man and knows how to peak at the right time. If I had a £1 to put on a home nation side going deep next WC I’d still pick England. I am a bit biased though

Thank you! Too many rugby 'fans' these days have a soccer mindset, they want to sack the coach after a bad run rather than play the long game. EJ is brining players through, he has a succession plan. Massive win for England and a cracker of a match. Attacking rugby played with guile and cunning from both teams. Two beautiful tries from France. England were very resolute and were much better with ballin hand. A game played at pace with ball in hand is a pleasure to watch and this time England made the most of visiting the French 22. Big confidence boost for England beating a world class side.

Best game at Twickenham for years, for a neutral spectator. Even if the standards slipped a bit in the second half. The only bad news is that EJ will keep his job; and we will keep the same not-quite-good-enough 8, 9, 10, & 12 until [we fail to win] the next World Cup.

No way Origo.Check out the seventies in amateur days the game was far more exciting to watch & play. Players instinctively ran with ball in hand. The players are much larger and fitter now so the governing bodies have had to police the contact area to avoid litigation and it is spoiling the spectacle as a result.Good game today but that is not the norm in this day and age unfortunately.

Ref had a good game, are you joking.
French picking the ball up while lying in the rook, illegal, Penauld pass forward, penalty at the scrum with the ball being passed out. Itoje try ruled out, with absolutely no clear view at all. Warning of a yellow card with Eng still with less total pens than France and no infringement that stopped a try. Brilliant game, but not by the ref....Strewth...

I’m a Welshman and thought that England were fantastic yesterday.
”Wales will be found out”is disingenuous. Lucky against England first half, they recovered and then threw it away. Scotland and Ireland - players broke laws and got sent off. So are we writing off any game that’s involved a sending off now? We won’t be “found out” even if we lose. I’m just happy to see us play running rugby again.

Just a detail but very surprised the Penaud try was not checked for a forward pass, nor even commented on.Those grass stripes on the pitch suggest it was 1-2 metres ahead.

World Rugby have asked that referees interpret the forward pass laws differently. It’s less about the actual direction of the ball, more the direction it leaves the passer’s hands. Provided it starts in a lateral or backward direction, even if the ball appears to float forward when you look at lines across the pitch it’s a fair pass. Apologies, I’m not sure I’ve explained it properly.

The detail - the ball regularly travels in a forward due to the momentum of the passer; it's the direction of the pass that is important so the grass markings don't come into play. Hope that helps.

The pass was forward. Also you will see Fickou breached the 10m boundary at the lineout leading to the try. He started his run long before the ball passed the last man in the lineout, making him offside. A nice move yes, but legal no. Fortunately had no impact on the final result.

Many thanks to all who replied expressing opinions on the ‘forward pass’ opinions. I stand by my remarks.
And on looking again, the grass stripes are 5m wide and the ball is caught some 2.5 m ahead from where the ball was passed. Penaud, initially well behind, had to pause and jump in the air to catch the loopy pass. I don’t see a lot of momentum and I’ve seen them given for much less.

Best game at Twickenham for years, for a neutral spectator. Even if the standards slipped a bit in the second half. The only bad news is that EJ will keep his job; and we will keep the same not-quite-good-enough 8, 9, 10, & 12 until [we fail to win] the next World Cup.

Really well deserved win but why do the BBC have to say that England "snatched" victory over France? They put in the bigger shift with a big push in the last 10 minutes and were worth the win. Amazing how performances improve though when certain established players face being dropped...I think that France will be too good for Wales though, just superb at the breakdown.

Good win for England. Didn't control the game against Scotland or Wales, but this one was a good old arm wrestle which England came out on top.

Less aimless kicking by England at the half way mark, more contesting and better decision making to get the upper hand.

Definitely needed win for England given expectations. Would probably drop Farrell and one or two others though.

Fantastic game. France looked superb 1st half but England stuck in and played some great rugby themselves. Thought 2nd half, England always looked most likely and France never in England’s 22. Just about deserved in the end and just shows what can be done with ball kept in hand. Still too many penalties and would still, personally, make couple of personnel changes but feeling better.

Played England at last deciding better to run than kick, which they realised in the Wales game, at least this ref had a good game!!!!!, thanks to Wayne Barnes for the guidance..
Playing with intent, ball in hand but kick when needed.

Some serious humble pie being eaten tonight.

England were apparently a bad team, yet just beat the RWC favourites.

Tom Curry should have been MoM, and great to see Youngs outplay Duponte.

Why was Earl pen reversed but the 5 holding Itoje obviously in a ruck was not?
