They say the best commentators capture the mood of the moment- no one did it better than Murray. RIP my friend.
I met him years ago at The Goodwood Festival.
As much as he'll be remembered for his commentary, I was struck by his boundless knowledge and enthusiasm for all things motor racing.
And a nicer, more generous and gracious 'name ' would be very difficult to find.
An absolute gentleman.
Thank you Murray.

it beggers belief honestly how people can downvote these so sad
Legend, will be sadly missed, THE voice of F1.
I missed his commentary after he left it. Race day was never the same.
I had to log in to just say... who on Earth would down vote this 5 times (so far)? Shame on you. This was a man who enthused millions with his passion for F1 (including me) and clearly had a family that will miss him and cherish him for being so influential in this sport. Truly, shame on you and you cowardly anonymous 'thumbs down'.
Made the Grand Prix worth watching. RIP great man.
Often mimicked, never surpassed.
You know you're getting old when your childhood heroes are no more ??

So True - I cried for Senna and blubbed Marray as knew loved and met both
Go! Go! Go! ...gone, but never to be forgotten.
RIP Murray - thanks for everything.

Rest in Peace Murray. Wonderful commentator who brought undertanding to the masses on formula 1. The Twit (may have spelt that incorrectly) who attempts your job these days for the Beb cannot hold a candle.
Who down voted this? A bbc apologist or a troll not old enough to understand .

This is the first time for many years on the hys that I have ever seen hundreds of upvotes and not one single downvote. Speaks volumes for how well respected and loved MW was. Rest in peace and god bless.
So true. Nicely put.
What a fabulous comment!
Whoever is downvoting these comments needs to take a good hard look at themselves. Vile.
RIP Murrary. A true legend and a top Brummie to boot. Ta-ra a bit

Who the Hell voted this comment down?!?
Give yourselves a slap.

Maybe there's an explanation for the downvotes - perhaps a mistake hitting the wrong target due to tears in eyes. Not something that I often admit to, but no shame tonight. This gentleman was - and always will be - legendary. A fine tribute, Rappers!
Rappers, if Carlsberg made comments! Wonderful!
Rest in Peace Murray.

......& always at lap record pace! Well said. RIP Murray Walker.
Great commentry race after race from Murray and a great man came through at interviews. His enthusiasm got me interested in F1 years ago. RIP Murray
Loved him commentating. Smashing bloke .RIP Murray.
Like a lot of people I suspect he brought me into the world of formula 1. Always remember his 'now watch this statement' which guaranteed a crash :) he was brilliant in every respect, such a nice guy. He will be missed. Thoughts with his family.
Everyone has an opinion on everything these days. But my opinion on you is that you were a really lovely bloke who loved the sport you were commenting upon, and understood the humans you were commenting upon. Kindness and understanding forever. RIP Murray. A true gentleman.
Another bit of my childhood now gone ... getting old.

We could go on forever... "And... there goes Senna in his McLaren which is absolutely unique, except for Prost's identical car who is right behind him." (or words to that effect) RIP Murray!

Murray Walker A legend with effervescent enthusiasm is a perfect description of this wonderful man. A brilliant commentator who made one feel like he was just talking to you. RIP Murray Walker.
effervescent enthusiasm, there isn't enough words or alliteration to personify this Gentleman but yours are very befitting
So true (Daniel?)
One of the greatest sports commentators of all time. Grew up watching F1, and say to those that listen, that his infectious love of the sport was a big part of the reason I’d watch it.
RIP Murray.
RIP Murray.
Dan Maskell, Harry Carpenter, Kenneth Wolstenholme...and Murray Walker.... Voices that enhanced the sports they commentate on. RIP
Plus John Arlott
Add in Coleman, Vine, O’Sullivan, Davies, Aliss, Beneaud, Arlott, Johnston. It’s a long list. Can’t help think we were the lucky generation.
Never be another F1 commentator like him, and a thoroughly nice man.
RIP MW.

I was going to add Peter Allis but maybe he is already there :-)
Harry Carpenter was a commentator; as for the other 4, never heard of ‘em! (hint : check spelling before posting)
I'd like to add Brian (Johnners) Johnston to that list.
Possibly Henry Blofeld, too, because he was... Well, he was Blowers.

Not only the greatest F1 commentator of all time but the greatest sports commentator ever.
Irreplaceable
I will never forget Mansell beating Senna at Monaco
Damon Hill winning in 1996
Mansell with his bump on his head.
Since he retired in 2001 it’s not been the same.
His commentary double act with James Hunt was pure delight professional and hilarious
With Senna Hunt and the greats again tonight

Sad news. Always enjoyed Murray’s commentary. Legend. RIP Mr. Walker
Better than any of them! He made me an f1 fan!
RIP.

What an absolute legend of motorsport and broadcasting . Even through all his mistakes us F1 fans still loved Murray for his enthusiam . My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. He had great partnerships with James Hunt and Martin Brundle . To think Murray commentated on Kimi and Fernando in their rookie season and both are still going in F1.
"The" voice of motorsport.
One of a kind , he had the talent and personality that could have made making a cup of tea sound exciting.
Thanks Murray for the many happy childhood memories of F1. RIP Legend ??
His commentary when Damon Hill won the world championship was superb, a true pro and a gentleman.
Sad news iconic commentary will be missed R.I.P Murray
R.I.P. Murray. You made F1 interesting, you made us laugh. You are GOAT in F1 commentary
Murray Walker, simply the best commentator of F1, a world champion. Thanks Murray RIP.
RIP Murray. His infectious enthusiasm made him the perfect commentator for motorsport.
Bless you, Murray. Only saw you once on a tube train and you were engrossed in a car racing mag - what else ? And were you the original commentator's curse ? "Surely, with two laps to go, nothing can stop Nigel Mansell winning this Grand Prix. AND HE'S SPUN OFF !!!!!" Yes, it's never been quite the same since you finished.
Loved Murray's commentary, I even remember the Hunt days too. Very rare for me to say but this is one celeb I will miss and I thank him for the joy he brought me over the years.
Walker was a fan and an enthusiast, and expressed this well, but was a terrible commentator, a function which requires a bit of detachment. He was hardly alone in this, as excitement is infectious, and often over-rules competence, and there are other examples. I guess different sorts of spectator respond to different sorts of commentator.
If you can't say something good about someone who has died then don't say anything at all.
This is probably the first one that actually hits me, that is not in any way being disrespectful to all the greats that have been and gone during my life time but this man was a huge part of my early informative years. His ability to project enthusiasm, knowledge and passion through just voice alone is something I doubt will ever be equalled or surpassed. Hugely inspirational and respected.
Thanks Murray for all my childhood memories of watching F1 on Sunday Grandstand , listening to your upbeat amazing commentary. There is and will always be only one MW - RIP Sir
Murray Walker was the true champion of the F1. He made sport popular as much as any team and driver did. Should have at least one section of track or stand at Silverstone named after him.
Legend in F1 alongside the drivers, simple as that
enthusiasm, warmth, extensive knowledge & an ability to laugh at himself. I remember a story he told about a time he commentated with James Hunt. every 15 minutes or so James would leave the booth and could be found on the steps outside, enjoying a Camberwell Carrot due to the poor quality of the racing.
Thanks Murray
Thanks Murray
Served in 4th Armoured Brigade in WW2. Rode Sherman tanks into battle and rose to Captain. Was THE voice of F1. His love for the sport showed on through his mic. Born couple of miles up the road from me. Total legend in my eyes. RIP Murray.
I'm totally choked, much more so than I thought I would be. Murray was the reason I fell in love with F1 - it was his voice describing James Hunt winning the championship in a very wet Japanese Grand Prix that hooked me for life. Its the abiding memory I have of my late Dad, watching that late night race with him. Murray - you were a small but important part of my life - much love and God bless.
I had exactly the same introduction. Watched James Hunt win in torrential rain listening to this madman commentator who was more excited about motorc racing than anyone in the world. Hooked since then and never tired of Murray's words or voice. Legend is a much overused word these days but it is the only word that does justice to Mr Walker. RIP.
He was the standard by which all others shall be judged.
Marvellous - and sadly missed.
Marvellous - and sadly missed.
A true icon of British Sporting History, his commentary was as electrifying as the races themselves and I enjoy the company of his just as must the race. Will never forget the "lump in my throat as Hill won the championship". He gave so mush to the sport and I am truly priveleged to of lived through his era.

THE voice of F1 - enthusiastic, entertaining, knowledgeable and relevant
'There's nothing wrong with Murray, except that he's dead.'
No other commentator for any other sport has ever matched the enthusiasm this man provided us with. He clearly loved what he did, and his commentary was just a reflection of that love.

RIP Murray...joining the legends of my youth...Dan Maskell, Peter Alliss, Bill McLaren, Kenneth Wolstenholme, John Arlott, Harry Carpenter. We won't see their like again.
Down voters? Probably never heard of them. Just trolls being unbelievably funny. Sad really.
