This will be the end of the Messi years at Barcelona.

PSG will win the CL under Pochettino this year and Messi will move to Paris for a few years before a final swansong in the Middle East/China/US.

Great to see Pochettino making a success of things after the disgraceful way he was treated at Spurs.

Beating a fallen Barcelona side in the last 16 is not “success”.
Neither are PSG’s results in the French Ligue 1.

On topic though - It’s a sad time to be a football fan. We’ve been blessed with Messi & Ronaldo, Ronaldinho & Ronaldo before them.
Mbappe and Haaland appear to be the next top 2.
Barcelona should not have sold Neymar & Suarez. Awful decisions.

I can see Liverpool winning the Champions League this year. They have to, they have had their blip and a big one it was at that. I'm not sure how the draw plays out, but if they are facing a team in the Final that has not won it before - the psychological edge will be theirs and will be huge. (Birmingham City fan).

Couldn't agree more, there were question marks about Dembele's fitness even when he was at Dortmund. The useless former board got him on a absurdly overpriced transfer fee as a knee jerk reaction to losing Neymar to PSG. There's nothing much to Dembele apart from speed, he would of been better off been a sprinter for France although given his injury issues his hamstring would probably keep going.

The problem FC Barcelona has is that, basically, they are broke. They take in a huge huge amount through tourism - visiting their club museum at 25€ a go - and since the pandemic they have taken nowt in almost 2 years now. Suarez went to pay Messi’s 100 million salary. Messi won’t stay. Unless he takes a huge pay cut.

I agree, Dembele ballooned the ball high into the sky at least 4 times. And as for losing possession, when you consider the importance of “possession of the ball” to Barcelona’s philosophy, it’s incredible they still pick him to play. The €300+m spent on Dembele, Griezmann and Coutinho, could have got us Van Dijk, Mbappe and Harland ??

The cheating (let’s call it what it is) has in my opinion had a knock on effect. I see ALL footballers as untrustworthy which I also think why so many people were ready to attack them at the beginning of this crisis.

What’s equally infuriating is that pundits and even VAR accept and promote this cheating. Players diving from the lightest of touch, confirmed by replays but still called a ‘foul’

Messi has been a great player and is still up there at the top. However, he is entering the final phase as a player. I don't know what motivates him but why would he want to uproot his family and move to another country. He would have to 'prove' once again that he could still 'do it' or his legacy would be slightly diminished. He is an idol at Barca, so why move?

At the same time you could say it's his chance to sign for another big club before he retires. A new culture, league and adventure. Depends if you're the glass half full who loves adventure or glass half empty who loves routine kind of guy. But there's definitely a huge appeal to most, especially Messi to seek out a new challenge. Let's face it hes got 3 months left on his contract and not signed

It could be good for Messi and BCN to part for a couple of years. Long-term, Messi will be in some managerial role at BCN, so it would be sensible for him to gain experience outside the club monoculture. Re-uniting with Guardiola at City would be the obvious way ahead., being more or less family, which Messi seems to value highly.

Because he's achieved all he can there. His legacy is safe. Winning another La Liga or Champions League with Barca adds little to it, whereas going elsewhere opens his reputation and opportunities to become an icon to a million fans of another club.
If I were him I'd be off somewhere new for 2 or 3 years, it's now or never.

Messi has won everything in the game except the big one - the World Cup.
If he stays at Barca, his career will end before he adds any silverware other than domestically available in Spain.
He’s got enough money to retire.
He is clearly unhappy and doesn’t have the same hunger and desire as before. If he came to England he’d get man marked and hideously tackled. His glory days are over I’m afraid.

If Messi went to the UK or Germany you would soon see that his tally of goals would drop considerably. This is because the quality of defending and footballing standards in both these countries currently far exceeds that in Spain which is now a three way race for the title. This write-up is all about Messi and Barcelona but PSG won the tie convincingly. I have watched two top sides in Juventus and Barcelona go out on successive nights and partly I feel it's because they make players who should have retired the centre of their game.

Well done to PSG. Pochettino set them up not to lose this game and the result is they tried to defend and FCB had the initiative.

This feels unhealthy. Barca should be reflecting on this defeat but also focusing on the remainder of their domestic season. Instead the focus is all on the running “will he? Won’t he?” saga with Messi.

So often, teams actually improve when the star man leaves. Hard to believe it could be the case when the star man is as good as Messi, but as I say, all of this doesn’t seem helpful.

Barcelona have some promising young talent emerging like Pedri, Fati and De Jong . But for too long their dependence on Messi against the continents big boys has been all too obvious. Canavaro, Nesta, Maldini, Chiellini, Bonucci, Buffon. Why did these players not come knocking on the door of the EPL?
Maybe the lifestyle and camaraderie is more important than 'proving' yourself in England.
And given the choice of continental lifestyle over UK, I'd chose the former.

Messi is an overrated player. The media have hyped him up over the years, but the reality is that he’s a half decent attacking midfielder - who would still make most fist teams in the premier league - but no better than the likes of Lingard or Raphinha.

Who cares where Messi goes, it's all me, me, me in his world, Barca aren't a one man team yet the board have allowed him to drain the club of ridiculous amounts of money over the years. It's about time somebody stood up and said its time to move on, he's like a having a factory worker dictating how the company should be run. Get rid now.

Wrong - King Keylor saved his penalty, as he did with several other efforts.

Good enough to compete in a 3 horse race of La liga. Barca are not good enough with this team to make it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League several years from now...

Speaking of 3 horse races - doesn't England wish it had one?

PSG had to only play the game out with such a big lead.
It only appeared Barca played better.

Barca undone again. Truth is Messi is in the autumn of his career and is no longer the player he was. Like the other great talent Ronaldo he has lost his pace and ability to turn a game. He has been a pleasure to watch but hiss time is up.

It's time for Messi to move on and finish his career in the USA. If he moves to another European club he brings FFP with him unless he's wanting to half his wages. At City KDB will want equal pay and at PSG Neymar will too. His family don't want to move to Manchester or Paris but maybe Beckham's Miami might change their minds.

I agree, not with 'King' Kavas but the term 'missed', implies didn't hit the target. It's different to a save.
Baggio and Waddle missed penalties.

Same with fouls, 'he won a free kick', no, he was 'awarded' a free kick.

Overrated Messi lol the great man has been tearing up defences for years. As for comparing him to Raphinia, well I'm a Leeds supporter and dont want him to leave in the summer. But to make a comparison between him and one of the greatest players ever is pretty silly.

To be fair. Comments re. Messi claiming he's the best ever are irritating. Pele and Maradona were miles better players.

I find it really sad that the BBC has such coverage of European football but not domestic highlights available on the website. Beneath this article you can watch Louis the biter Suarez and catch up on all of La Liga highlights but not the premier league. Sad times.

And what about the French one horse race, oh no wait a minute, PSG are second. French League 1 is the tightest of the lot.
Do you watch other leagues or just comment on them?

I watch on average 4 Ligue 1 games a week because I live there, and the quality is absolutely rubbish. There’s a reason why they had to basically give the TV rights away for nothing.

King Keylor made a great save from a Busquets header in the 2nd half, and a Messi shot from 6 yards was blocked.
