England's series defeat in India is sealed with one final, abject batting collapse on the third day of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad.

Disappointing from England. Most of the players looked like they can't wait to get back home.

Nevertheless this India team is world class with brilliant players across the team. Great batsmen, wicket keeper, all rounder, spinners, pace bowlers. England, currently, are lacking a few of these.

To be fair, I'd be the same if I were an England player. It's easy to sit here and criticise them for that but unless you have sat in a bubble for 2 months with no outside contact in a foreign country, you shouldn't.

England are lacking batsmen that can play spin well enough. Bar Root and maybe Lawrence we looked poor.

Well, actually, I agree. Most English players went there just to show their face once and then leave. So that they are then remembered during the IPL auction.

No self-confidence, inspiration or national pride. A huge shame.

England announced their arrival in a muscular manner, with a hint of arrogance and not offering enough respect to the Indian side. Winning two tests in SL only worsened their stance. Australia made the same mistake and paid the price. The defeat of England has mismanagement, poor-conduct, lack of respect for opposition written all over it.
Lesson to be learned. When in India, play like Indians do!

Yes India are a good side, but for the forthcoming matches in England I would only take take Anderson and Broad from the current England side. If India can have someone like those two they would be unbeatable for years. Players who can bowl under the "English" conditions.

this India team has a very fragile top order batsmen. They rarely score 400 these. Not world class. They were mauled over in SA, NZ and England. Winning in India and Aus alone doesn't make a great team

How very dismal, how very England! Admittedly against the best Test side in the world on their patch, but still... Dear Selectors, can we take two things out of this, please? Stop imagining that Bairstow is a Test No.3, and put Crawley back where he belongs, instead of asking him to open!

Promise from Lawrence, good to see Foakes back, steady from Leach. Precious little else that's new & good.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be awkward but why is it good that Foakes is back? He is a myth. His keeping is very good, yes. But Buttler hardly makes mistake after mistake any more. Buttler also has a higher average without having the luxury of playing most of his test matches on the sub continent where scores are generally higher.

Bairstow is a One Day batsman, not a Test Match batsman. I said this even when he was recalled against a poor Sri Lanka team and did well. It's been proven over many years, many series, many Tests- just look at his scores in his last 30 Tests, look at his Test batting average. No one should be surprised at all.

England selectors have been clueless, and Test match selection policy badly misguided at best, for as long as I can remember. But while I understand the need for players to rest and not spend months on end in a biosecure bubble, the current level of chopping & changing marks a new low - it's utter madness, giving players little chance of performing at their best, destroying morale & confidence

Nothing is going to change until England start respecting other cricketing cultures, especially spin. The thought that ball can turn from day 1 just like it can seam from day 1 is alien to this country is baffling.

No one is disrespecting 'cultures'. We start the season here in April and you are not going to get too many turners then. The ball will always move through the air in the U.K and it has nowt to do with pitches. The great Mike Procter said that, if it swings, it has nothing to do with what the pitch is like. I would say though that the poor surfaces of the last two matches have really stuck to the minds of the batsmen, they have a mindset that the ball could turn/not turns off of any surface and it’s causing havoc.

None of these coaches employed by the ECB seem to make any real attempt to get batsmen to develop and maintain a good technique (i.e. playing straight and using the feet properly).
Neither Burns nor Sibley have the techniques required to succeed against top quality bowling; Burns; stance is awful, Sibley doesn't present the full face of the bat to the ball half the time. We miss Cook badly.

This wicket should have played like the second test wicket. The fact that that it was a good surface leaves the conclusion that the T2 and T3 were deliberately under prepared . Pathetic from England. Went into this test a bowler short and that batting line up just continues to fail. Bairstow picked on name (friends with Root) alone and quite clearly has never been Test match quality. Sibley is a Rabbit and my dog could bowl better than Bess. "If you think India will lie down in England in the summer you are sadly deluded!", well they have done the last four times they've been to England 11-2, with a couple of possible exceptions India have no bowlers that are good enough in English conditions, NZ will prove that.

England won three tosses and yet lost three matches in a country which was described as win-toss-win-match country. Last encounter, English spinner only managed two wickets, same pitch Indians scalped 18.

Clearly shows the skill-gap, in batting, in spin bowling. England seems to be better only in pace bowling.

Bitter pill to swallow! Let bygones be. Let's brace for India-NZ showdown this summer.

For it to be a decent series, England had to respect the opposition and put their best 11 on the field, every game and wanting to win almost desperately. None of this was on display. England has players who could do well if allowed to express. Buttler,Moeen to name a couple besides Root. Leach did a fairly decent job on his own, Root tried, but short of that win at all costs attitude.

Until we play our 1st class cricket in the middle of the season and permit county championship teams to prepare wickets that will spin at some point, all tours to South Asia will always end the same way. If our spinners don't learn, or indeed play regularly then our batsman will never learn to bat against good spin bowling. You reap what you sow !!

To learn our players need experiance in the same conditions. Before their last tour of England, India were looking at several players having a few county games,. Kohli was due to play for Surrey. Many English cricketers have been lots of experience in India as they have been playing in IPL for years - Bairstow, Ali, Archer, Stokes, Buttler. Agreed. ECB should eat their words & give Somerset some credit for preparing a wicket to suit their strong spin attack instead of listening to the siren call of Essex etc to deduct points. We had only four world class players in Anderson, Broad, Root and Stokes in India. Anderson and Broad, though not at their peak, will still be a handful in English conditions for any batsman. Deluded..one team scored 375 on the same pitch. England batted first on this pitch..think of better excuses like Stokes' dodgy tummy

What are we going to blame this defeat on? Bad pitch, poor umpiring, pink ball with extra lacquer, players wearing wrong coloured underwear? Answers on a post card please...

Nothing is going to change until England start respecting other cricketing cultures, especially spin. The thought that ball can turn from day 1 just like it can seam from day 1 is alien to this country is baffling.

Watching Afghanistan v Zimbabwe at the moment.

It's England's level of cricket. Time to stop embarrassing ourselves against proper cricketing nations.

We're Division 3 material.

Congrats to India first of all. They’ve been the most consistent test team, along with NZ, and both are justified finalists. Should be a cracking final and I expect the ICC to prepare a pitch that offers value for the occasion

For England, lessons haven’t been learnt on spin and batting fragility.Even at home, they suffer when the pitch takes spin late

Work needs doing for summer & the ashes!
Not even India, or their lap dogs the ICC can prepare the English weather. Removed

India yes but NZ have won most of their tests at home and lost most of their away ones plus they have played less than half the number England have so not really sure how they have got there

England played 4 tests....won the toss 3 times out of 4....chose to bat 3 times out of 4. They are truly a world class outfit.

Pitch 1, Cricket 0. Perhaps test series need home and away fixtures with away wins counting double. Or a simpler solution could be to put greater controls on pitch preparation

If you think that pitch was the reason England lost, you couldn't have been more deluded. Both teams batted on the same pitch, one team scored 375, the other folded away

I don't mind who wins. Just sad that when we finally have live cricket on TV it is cut so short. The pitches were a factor in this and not a small one

Michael Vaughan you are sounding like a stuck record. I really hope we don't have to listen to you in the summer. Please can we have some more positivity and better analysis. BBC commentary far behind what was actually happening on the field. Thank you Channel 4. Congratulations India, no.1 team.

Agree with most of the comments on Vaughan as a pundit. Strikes me he reacts to the last piece of information rather than taking a more balanced view. He tries to be controversial rather than informative. Whilst the conditions were tough, I do think England have real problems with their batting. Top 3 no where near good enough.

Not sure who selected this squad, but they must have done it at 4 in the morning whilst on their 2nd bottle of whisky. Everybody knows the ball spins so why take average spinners, batters who are good against the ball that swings and seams, but not spin. The batters used to practice against Merlin when Shane Warne was about, obviously the closest to this was Dynamo, poor effort by 50% of the squad

Tired of people asking did England take "average spinners"

Leach is the best spinner in the country. Bess took wickets in Sri Lanka, to be fair, and would have been nonsense to drop him. Who else is there? Matt Parkinson who struggled to take wickets in D2 county cricket?

To be fair, I'd be the same if I were an England player. It's easy to sit here and criticise them for that but unless you have sat in a bubble for 2 months with no outside contact in a foreign country, you shouldn't.

England are lacking batsmen that can play spin well enough. Bar Root and maybe Lawrence we looked poor.

Yeah, must be hard to be in a luxury hotel for a couple of months with your mates and getting paid handsomely to play sport.

I do have some sympathy with the players and maybe it's the leadership that is lacking in and around the team in that the players are mentally fatigued.
