Covid-19: Is school mask and testing policy flawed?
06/03/2021 | news | health | 969
Will masks and mass testing actually help? Will infection rates go up - and would it matter?
Masks have never been shown to be effective in the uncontrolled reality of normal life. Every country that has had a mask mandate has had no impact on cases. Fine in an operating theatre, pointless around the shops. Thumb me down all you like, but I’m afraid it is true. Removed

Masks may have a worthwhile benefit in certain situations - such as public transport - but to far too many people they've just become a talisman. Something to cling to in the belief it must keep you safe regardless. In reality, I'd prefer to avoid the crowded situations where one would make any difference at all.

The Government’s “Pandemic Preparedness Strategy” acknowledged that “although there is a perception that the wearing of facemasks by the public in the community and household setting may be beneficial, there is in fact very little evidence of widespread benefit from their use…”

Unfortunately your belief simply isn't true.

Masks reduce transmission, by protecting others from the wearer.

They're not magic, nor a complete solution. They're just one of the measures that help.

Whether they should be used in the classroom is another matter entirely. The point being that the group is in such close contact for so long that the effects of masks are largely negated.

The mask obsession is tiresome. It’s a tokenism, bordering on pointless wearing them outside like some do. Not long now til the madness is meant to end though. They’ll be some who’ll wear them all the time now - brainwashed and cowered by the sensationalism surrounding this virus.

Boris said himself that the law making masks mandatory in shops was to give people confidence to go shopping as a measure to kick-start the economy.

The science behind masks is tenuous at best (see the linked SAGE study).

Exactly. If they worked so well then why did we just see the biggest ever spike in cases? Many times bigger than pre-mask culture. Granted more testing, but come on a braindead squirrel can see they're nothing more than a gimmick. What saddens me is people ENJOY wearing masks and have some fetish about it.

I agree and if masks don't work what will the Government force through next. Compulsory vaccination of school children? How do feel about that?

I find it hard to imagine that anyone is looking at Johnson, sunak, patel, Hancock and Williamson and feeling like they weren’t duped into backing the most incompetent, deceitful and corrupt government of all time.

This isn’t a strategy but a headline with the details provided much later if ever.

Bbc deleted my comment saying this is winged strategy thrown together for headlines but is devoid of details before it even appeared!

Hys, but only if our Tory supporting mod agrees. I will appeal and I will get a reply saying it’s been re-added on Wednesday, but laughable as usual

Laughable is your rhetoric nonsense is what you spout.
Now that the elderly and vulnerable have been vaccinated and shielded by the whole nation locking down at a cost of trillions it's time to stop persecuting the young and healthy for being....... well young and healthy.

If you have no symptoms and all who should be are vaccinated then fine go out and enjoy yourself and get back to normal for gods sake.

And it's exactly that attitude and jumping the gun that leads to idiots breaking the rules AGAIN.

I've been shielding a year, have so far had my one vax and won't be safe until early May when my 2nd vax will be effective.

But Covidiots you get back to 'normal' in your usual me, me, me selfish fashion.

I won't be to blame if this gets out of control again.

Shameful. Shame. Shame.

Completely agree, if the vaccines work then I don’t know why we need all the measures still. Where I live they are doing under 65s already so that’s the bulk of the vulnerable with a small number of exception who can stay in and shield

Vast majority of the people in the ranges you have included have only had half the vaccine so far. The vaccines only prevent serious illness and hospitalisation for most and a certain number will still die. Until the world is vaccinated and the infection rate is small we are going to have to continue to take precautions and slightly alter the way we live.

"We know it's not going to make much difference" - exactly because masks are just a symbol now to show control and give the illusion of doing something productive. It's gotten way out of hand. Absolute gimmick at the expense of children's mental health. Raising a generation of kids who will be scared to death of living their lives with their brith faces on show.

The modern BBC are an agenda driven, social engineering monoculture, who now shamefully saturate their various platforms with whatever their view might be.
They think masks are a good thing, so they show people wearing them at every opportunity.
At no point do they acknowledge that the tiny benefit, if any, is more than cancelled out by the way people behave with them in the real world.

What are you talking about?
This really is not worth discussing. What we should be talking about is the insulting pay rise for our nurses who have risked more than most during this pandemic! How can we not reward them but give No 10 a revamp costing millions of taxpayers money. I say don’t revamp No 10, claw back some of the money dished out to dodgy contracts and give the nurses the pay rise they deserve! Removed

"What we should be talking about is the insulting pay rise for our nurses who have risked more than most during this pandemic!"

Most NHS staff have done a sterling job throughout the pandemic, just as they were paid and trained to do and they kept their jobs.

However, even if they do deserve a bit more, they are not heroes and I do wish that people would stop abusing that term.

the BBC deleted my comment simply for stating that in a real world situation the masks have little to no effect. There are studies showing this, namely the Danish study. Also with BBC removing my comment it further cements the fact that they are a sounding board for the government and wish to avoid debate. It is shameful.
