England's batsmen once again fail to deliver on the first day of the final Test against India in Ahmedabad.

Could have been worse, but should have been MUCH better. No scars, Joe? Pull the other one & I'll be able to do you a bad impersonation of a Morris dancer! Not from ENG, a good 80 runs short of competitive, at least.

The one wkt gives us a little bit of hope for tomorrow, but we're going to have to bowl really well to get IND for 250-ish in order to stay in the game...

England’s total looks feeble but they batted better today -they put together 3 decent partnerships -each ended by an unlucky dismissal -Bairstow’s was umpire’s call and looked high, Stokes played for turn -but watching the replay Sundar clearly put revs on it to turn it away, and Pope’s dismissal was freakish. Thought he batted with great footwork to the spinners. Great to Dan score some runs too

sorry but not good enough. we won the toss and we are definitely 100-150 runs short. it was a good batting surface. throwing away our wicket just like that gives no excuses. yes stokes, lawrence and sundar batted well but still the defense is not good at all. i am able to see the impact of T20s in our batting. except 2/3 decent batsmen , we dont have quality test players

That may well be true but doesn’t mean the complaints about the pitch during the last test weren’t valid - it was woeful. Also note that the groundsman who prepared the pitch for the first test (which wasn’t to India’s liking) got sacked after...

Spot on. If the pitch is blameless then we're obviously not v good. Any talk about The Ashes better be postponed Mr. Silverwood. On this evidence we'll have no chance. It's about time that the 'new blood' started to show some form.

It’s an inexperienced batting line up -I imagine the likes of Pope and Crawley will average in the 40s in years to come. If expectations are high, it’s surely only beacause of the win in the first test

To be fair the England team didn't whinge- it was the media and others who whinged. Both teams had to play on the same wicket and in tests 2 and 3 the Indians played better. Root accepted that, and didn't whinge it was unfair. Now the issue were the two wickets suitable for a 5 day test- is another subject entirely.

Now, Children: before you start on “his pitch is spinnier than mine and it isn’t fair” and you want more grass because you could only go out to play 2 days last week, remember that they had just 2 days in Abu Dhabi earlier and nobody whined. It’s time for you to be a little more grown-up and realize that it isn’t meant to be easy and you need to work hard to earn your wins time in the sunshine.

To be fair, though, that was Afghanistan v Zimbabwe. Afghanistan were missing several of their best spinners and neither side have a particularly good batting line-up, do they?

As for the majority of England's batsman, it's like they are playing in the first test in India. Disappointing. 4th test and batting 1st and 205 all-out in the 1st day is poor.

It was also played in Abu Dhabi; neither Afghanistan's home ground or Zimbabwe's. Afghanistan usually play their "home" games in India.

Loose banter about pitch and pace does not befit losing teams. The Oz and English are becoming one-dimensional in their approach which is why they can't face test matches where all kinds of skills are necessary. Yeah, but it's not is it? The pitch is good and England batted poorly, but not awfully and got 200. In the last match England and India both batted below par, but on a shocking pitch and nobody got past 150. I want a test match where getting out is about skill (insomuch as there are always one or two unlucky dismissals), not a completely unpredictable pitch. This is it, Ahmedabad 1 was not.

Ifs, buts and maybes...
The umpires call, we all seem to forget, was because there is always an element of doubt in the tracking PREDICTION. In close calls the system is as likely to be wrong as the umpire...
Thus, umpires decision is only overturned where the system predicts a clear error (missing).
We now blindly trust the tracking prediction as perfect and judge the umpire on it. It isn't.

Promise from Lawrence until he got out. And Stokes actually. And Siraj looks a great find - bowling at over 90mph is why he did very well in Australia on debut.

The rest was more of the same - the English batsmen didn’t look entirely comfortable out there and India capitalised

And is Anderson. I mean, those figures of 5 maidens and 1 wicket might look simple but it takes a lot to produce that.

So this time is a bit different. Englands batting wasn't up to it, on what was a good test match pitch. 11 wickets in a day, is reasonable, particularly when England didn't bat well. Match should go to 4 days. Test match cricket, equal contest between bat and ball.

The difference? The pitch.

India won the last game because they were the better team. But it wasn't a good test match.

If Lawrence didn't have a moment of madness & Pope wasn't very unlucky with his wicket we'd maybe still be batting.

Those two were lucky Indian wickets. The rest were our mistakes again with the Indian bowlers making the most of it.

We're still in this.Siraj showing his inexperience sledging Stokes.Big mistake.

It's all set up for an exciting match.

At least the pitch has been prepared better!

The Lawrence wicket wasn't "lucky" for Ind, he had a moment of madness and gave his wicket away. That's not luck, it's poor batting. Pope was a bit unlucky, but you can't say that of any of the other wickets.

Pope got an inside edge on to his back leg so not completely unlucky. What was unlucky was the Pujara dismissal in the 1st test when a firm pull off Dom Bess hit the short leg fielder and popped up to be caught by Burns.

If you only pick 3 bowlers you really do expect the first innings total to be at least 300, especially on a balanced day one pitch. Having said that, getting to 200 means we’re in the game. No full toss’s tomorrow, Bess.

ECB should plan on brown pitches devoid of grass.

Still no sign of a pair of decent openers since Cooky and Strauss retired, add to this that it won't be long until Anderson and Broad call it a day and the future doesn't look too bright at all for England. The counties need to start and produce new talent capable of playing international cricket.

It might help if the ECB encourage Counties to produce wickets that actually spin instead of penalising Somerset - the one County that does and also produces 2 of the current spinners in the England squad - very short sighted - is this why Marcus has been appointed? Batted on a spinning pitch his whole career - let's hope he can help - England needs it!

Maybe, just Maybe it could be that the selectors just cannot recognize talent ? Bairstow does not have the mindset to be a Test cricketer but they still persist with him.
