The supermarket says it has begun consulting with workers over a major restructuring of its business.

Buys the business, loads it up with debt, sack workers to help pay down the debt and then walk away with the profits.

Been here and seen this before. These practices should not be allowed.

Not about Brexit - alot to do with servicing debt of the recent deal.
Also alot to do with change in shopping habits that pandemic accelerated. Many on HYS over the last year have happily boasted how online shopping is the future & those using shops are out of touch...maybe so; but the downside is fewer/smaller shops, more warehouse jobs & reduced tax income due to online retailers basing offshore

As a private company, Asda have the right to take on or dismiss staff as they like, provided they follow statutory and contract employment law.

But can we please stop subsidising their low wages? We know that without universal credit topping them up many of these jobs would not be viable. They're a massive company and I prefer my taxes being spent on reducing poverty, not prolonging it.
Please then can all supermarkets not sell you anything at all since you think we are all leeches of the state? Would like to see how long you'd last before you cried about no food and would give those UC back to the people. Moron Removed

Why should we clap them? For not wearing masks themselves? For letting people shop with no mask who clearly don't have medical conditions? For the panic buying we saw this time last year? They didn't have to let people walk out with a trolley filled with 200 loo rolls did they?

How many extra staff did Asda take on in the last year to deal with online orders? Probably more than 5000!

But, but...apparently the big Finance is bringing the wealth to this country! That's why Thatcher destroyed our manufacturing back in the 80s!

Looking at Asda's shenanigans you can now understand what type of wealth that is...
Dear BBC - removing my posting describing people who put profit over people's livelihood as sc*m - isn't going to get away from the fact that its true. They paid a premium for ASDA knowing full well that sacking people would improve their long term profit. Its the same type of sc*m that take millions out of a company in dividends then let it go bust with a massive pension deficit. Removed
