Why misfiring McIlroy needs Sunshine State swing
22/02/2021 | sport | golf | 421
Rory McIlroy missed the cut last week for the first time in 30 PGA Tour events but while underlying statistics suggest a deterioration in form, here's why the Florida-swing offers cause for optimism.

There are always going to be trolls, but the vast majority of comments (so far!) seem fairly measured and thought out. That's not the same as being correct though - nobody really knows why McIlroy is not winning or even contending more regularly, not even Rory himself it seems.

He has a tendency to drop his head when things go wrong. 'Bouncebackabililty' although a hugely annoying word, is a very important psychological measure in the game of golf. The best golfers frequently follow a bogey with a birdie, Rory doesn't seem to manage and often compounds the problem on the next hole. That is a flaw in mentality and psychological approach, not technique or golfing ability.

Slightly odd comments about nationality there, suggesting that the national broadcaster hates its own citizens.

Leaving that aside, Hatton is at a career high and has still won zero majors. Would be great if he won a few, but he hasn't yet, and missed the cut in all 3 majors last year.

Another strange article headline from Carter. How on earth will the Florida swing help him? You make it sound as soon as he plays In Florida he will win.nonsense he will face same players same quality. Rory proximity to hole is bad and his terrible blow up rounds are still there becoming a norm. This is mentally getting Rory and it will take a long time to win again. Competition is stiff at top.

178
23/02/2021 11:53:24 1 0

The problem that I see with his putting is that he doesn't get his approach shots close enough, then gets too aggressive with the first putt, trying to manufacture a birdie when one isn't really on the cards, and leaves himself 6 feet for par. The root cause is the approach shots, and the aggression of the first putt compounds the problem.

I agree with you on the poor approaches and subsequent aggressive first putt but would add that even when he does hit a good approach into the 8 - 15ft range his conversion rate is very low. He shaves the edge on so many occasions.

Rory, Rory, Rory. Usual lack of vision and originality from the BBC. He’s not even the top ranked UK player at the moment. Why not change the title of the “Sport” page to “Celebrity Sports and LBGt” page. Your golf correspondent is taking money under false pretences. I question the wisdom of Rory at times; he isn't the greatest putter and often misreads putts yet he doesn't let his caddy look with him and get advice or confirmation . If his caddy can't read greens then he needs to get a different one who can read greens. The old adage that you drive for show and putt for dough really does apply.
383
24/02/2021 12:31:58 1 0

Taking full ownership of putting rather than relying on the caddy was one of the reasons that he gave for changing caddy, and he then made it back to world number 1. His approach play puts too much pressure on his putting and he then putts too aggressively. He won't start contending again until his approach play sharpens up.

I am trying my best.

Anyway, off out now in a brutal wind and cold drizzle.

With good clothes and rain gloves one can still have fun and play well?

Hope you are well. Top man.

Rory's past his best, for sure, but there's no reason for him to call it quits already is there?
