English championship better than Spanish league
So how come Spanish teams have won the majority of both European trophies in the past decade?
One Spanish club has won more European trophies than Liverpool and Utd combined.
The "best" we have aren't even halfway close.
The "best" we have aren't even halfway close.
Hes done a good job Diego simeone with Atletico Madrid battlened hardened warriors with never say die attitude to have that all season long is a great feat, with less money than the big 2 it's the way football should be.
I agree hunt in packs like hyenas and always poaching around for mistakes. They are shifty, distractingly dangerous and don’t waste time. Just the way he likes them. Suarez is a perfect talisman
“will pose a genuine threat to Chelsea”
Get it right, Chelsea are the underdogs here. Atleti are a better side and if anyone doesn’t realise that already then they’re in for a shock. I’d just like to see Chelsea be competitive and from there, whatever happens happens.

Great comment.
Chelsea shouldn't be the underdogs based on their budget and the money they've spent. Atletico have no chance of competing with Chelsea in the transfer market if both want the same player. It shows what a good job Simeone and their scouting department does.
Shows what you know.
Everyone just reads what the article says and oh this guy makes a good point.
Anyone that has watched Athletico knows they are dull and defensive and won't ever change under Simeone.
Yes they are top of la liga but that's because the others are in ruin
Well played Chelsea

He is a bit like how Mourinho was. Plays defensive but gets the job done.
Bit dull to watch

Difference is Mourinho is NOT getting the job done.
That's not what the article suggests.
Did you read it?
How can they be defensive if they're average up to 3 goals per game this season?

Not this season, only Barcelona have scored more in the league - 5 more.
An interesting article. Give that man a raise.
He's on £413,000 a week... yes that's pounds not euros! And well deserved too. But his loyalty is likely a lot to do with pocketing £21.5m a year for usually coming 3rd. My favourite Spanish club anyway so not slating him but he's got a great gig!
Correction: My mistake that was his last contract... £36.2m a year! £696,000 a week. Highest paid gaffer in world football.
Not at the moment but at Christmas all the spuds thought he was the best thing since sliced bread.
He is going through a rough patch.
Klopp is now.
Hodgson was till yesterday.
Ole had his critics as did pep in the opening few months
The cream rises to the top. He needs to be given time

Toothally agree
Diego Simeone has done an incredible job at Athletico. Like Jurgen Klopp at both Liverpool and Dortmund, he's turned a top six club into one that now sits comfortably in the very top tier with Barcelona, Real and the best that Europe has to offer. I really hope they go on and win La Liga.
Except that Simeone pulled Klopp's pants down last year and spanked him both home and away in the Champion's League.
How are Liverpool 'comfortable' anywhere? Let alone a very top tier? That btw doesn't really include Barca and Real at the moment.
If certain game in hand results go against them, Liverpool are legitimately 8th, out of both cups early again & only a hardcore scouser would have them anywhere near in the CL this season.

At-letico no H, they're Spanish
It just shows that the modern approach of sacking the manager after a poor run of form isn't always the answer
YET ANOTHER successful coach heavily influenced by Marcelo Bielsa, perhaps worthy of mention.
Maybe if bielsa was influenced by him on defending, Leeds wouldn't look like exciting, game amateurs at times.
Not really no, Bielsa's teams are tripe.
I'm presuming Simeone looked elsewhere when setting up a capable defence.
English championship better than Spanish league
I don’t like this man Diego Simeone because he got David beckham sent off at the 1998 World Cup. Nasty individual ??
Half-witted Beckam got himself sent off and cost England the game.
I fancy Chelsea for this one.
3 English teams in the 1/4 Finals please.

I'm a Chelsea fan and I don't. They struggle to make enough chances and convert the one's they do. At the other end they can get opened up too easily, see last Saturday.
Sadly another round-of-16 exit I'm afraid.

If Simeone had any sense he should stay in La Liga & stay away from here!
But he'll probably end up in the Premier League one day.Would be great to see him here all things considered.

Interesting but I'd like to know more about Athletico Madrid's Women's Team, which you haven't reported on once this year - which is a disgrace. Some of us love women's football and you do not cover it at all. You cover lower league prem and foreign clubs more!!
Good article-
Don't hold any hope for Chelsea.
Fully expect Atletico to progress in this one.

This is the bloke who threw himself on the floor and made out he had been shot to get Beckham sent off!
Hope this cheat gets well and truly thrashed!
And I'm not even English!

Why would you have to be English to have a personal opinion on something ?
Meh nobody cares about what happened in football from 23 years ago. Beckham was an idiot who through away as many crucial games as he won. He was at the pinnacle of the game in 1999 but left no legacy as there have been hundreds of far more successful players since and thousands before on the big stage.
I agree mate. I didnt have much time for Beckham either but this simeone is something else. A cheat from yesteryear. Trying to get other players booked or sent off is very ugly trait in football. Reminds me of Fernandes of manure. He tries that on a regular basis.
Im not english either.

Good article.
The comparison with Mourinho is striking. Mourinho has stayed with the same rigidity that brought him (and Rafa and others) some success in the past, failing to realise that the game has moved on.
Simeone has moved with the times, adapted his team and is being successful. Meanwhile Jose is still trying to recreate his old teams and blaming the players when it doesn’t work.

He has had the chance to keep and build on his squad while Real and Barca are in financial ruins. Are they really playing better or are the others just below par.
Was thinking the same, if he can change then Mourinho can change. Could you see spurs playing 3-5-2 with bale and dele as two number 8s either side of hoijberg behind son and kane. Spurs squad seem perfect fit for that style and system

"rather than a classic modern-day transfer window splurge."
Nice one Raj Dohan
A direct slur at Chelsea who everyone knows-
"Blue is the colour
Outspending is the game"
Abramovich likes time sensitive glittery players/managers- I'm sure he'll be desperate to add to the one paltry Champions League his fortune has bought.
Won't happen this season though.
Atletico are a far more established club.

I wonder what he'd do with the sort of budget available to the likes of Manchester City, PSG, Real Madrid and others?
Already has spent on average 100m a year over 5 years
Debatable isn't it - because if this article is right, he thrives off the underdog tag. The man who rejuvenates the rejects and the nearly men.
You can't play that role at Barca or Real. As great as he has been for Atleti, I'm not sure he would travel that well to be honest.

We hear this sort of comment about such managers, but it doesn't always translate. Look at Moyes as an example. It's not just a budget thing but also mentality and the club culture that counts.

The score when Beckham was sent off....2-2. The score at the end of 90mins & extra time....2-2. So no Beckham didn’t cost England the game it was our usual inability to score from the penalty spot that us??!!
He might be a great manager, and could even be a really nice bloke in private - who knows. But his touchline antics are undeniably pathetic, and he absolutely does come across as an excitable twerp.
Ah come the way he got Beckham sent off was funny you have to admit. Just wouldn't want to be one of his assistants who he attacks all the time.

"Demolished"?!?! It went to extra time when Adrian lost the plot. You don't like the club, fine, but don't rewrite history.
"Schooled" in both legs would be a more accurate description and Klopp's post match childish comments about them not playing "proper football" turned embarrassment into comedy given Liverpool were going to win everything last season and Atletico couldn't buy a win in their own league at the time.
None of us like the club, but all that 'Team from Mars' crap. They had 2 good seasons* and now it's back to the status quo
Surely this is old story, the reinvention was complete when he one the title and twice took them to the Champions League.
Why wait till now to give him recognition
Why wait till now to give him recognition
They didn't wait. This is a repeat. And a bit premature if you ask me.
Roberto Dimatteo won a Champions league.
Under 'Women's Football' there are four stories about DA MIGHTY LIONESSES! at the top but nothing about the Scotland v Portugal match. Is the BBC 1) Anti-Scottish, 2) Engerlundland Triumphalist 3) Anti-women, or 4) All three?
Difference is Mourinho is NOT getting the job done.
He's up there with Tony Pulis and the like.
Except with half a billion spent in five years. Their net spend is way higher than Chelsea. Someone has been relatively successful but I feel they lack finesse. No doubting fight! Game nous and strategic thinking with a devious underbelly full of thorns and poison. However, as a manager he compares to Zidane as he would as a player and a man

Even more shocking goalkeepers.
Arsenal hiring Arteta instead is an embarrassing error of judgement. Rodgers would have Arsenal inside the top 4 now, no question. And he do it playing great football, and getting the best out of young and old alike. He almost won the league at Liverpool with a worse team than Arsenal have now.

Athleti will rip chelsea a new one - no doubt about it. Suarez still banging them in for fun.
As an Everton fan I hope not. Hope Chelski beat them over 2 legs. Tuchel will have his first real test though, so hope he gets one over on simeone and his child like antics on the sidelines.
I think Atleti will, but I haven't heard of Ath-leti.
I dont mind Simeone for the simple reason he's broken the total domination of Spanish football by Barcelona and Real Madrid, hes also worked on nothing like the budget of his rivals. I know he's not everybody's cup of tea and his antics in technical area can be a bit over the top, but if he could lead Athletico to la Liga title it would be a real shot in the arm for football in that Country.
You know Atletico have spent more than half a billion in the last 5 years right?
They are good net spenders to be fair to them, but let's not pretend they are plucky underdogs.

Barca and Real are in financial ruin at the moment and athletico are not running away with the league albeit top for now.

They sold Griezmann to Barcelona for £108m, Lucas Hernandez to Bayern Munich for £72m, Rodri to Man City for £56m, and Partey to Arsenal for £45m. They have to buy/sell efficiently and balance the books. I repeat, they can't compete with clubs like Real & Barca in their own country, or Chelsea/PSG.
They sold griezman for 120mill and bought felix for 120m they still have the budget like Chelsea spent 200m and didn’t sell anyone
Griezmann left in the same transfer window that Felix arrived for approximately the same money. In effect they just swapped one player for the other.
Pretty sure the article was about his credentials as a manger
Similar in that respect to John Terry who played so long for Chelsea and England.
Even though I'm a non League super fan... I was at Anfield last season- Liverpool were not schooled by Atletico at all but for a goalkeeping blunder they would have won.
Perhaps I've been watching non league cloggers too much and lost the plot?

Simione is cast iron at Athleti, no mug and would probably be mental to the the Prem + his English is vitually non-existant.
Tuchel is living on borrowed time since he signed for the dirty cash - won't be long.

Oh yeah I appreciate they've not exactly been tight fisted themselves. But Athleticos outlay on players since his entire time as coach still cant be anywhere near what's been spent at the Nou Camp and Bernabau.
Oh dear jeb (you must be tired of hearing that?)
"plucky underdogs"?
Chelsea spent £¼ of a billion in the last Window alone never mind the last five years.

Funny on both levels, literal and metaphorical. Those pearly whites reflect the sun into opponents eyes, have caused injuries, reminds me of donkey rides at the beach. This fella rolls around, whinges, berates the ref. Provokes opponents, draws fouls and amidst all that drama and confusion pounces like wild dog pulling a chicken to its doom. Someone wants that street fighting slippery type.
We had the Hazard and Morata money totaling £140m+ plus 7 on-loan players sold for around £48m plus another £10m in loan fees, over 2 seasons including the transfer ban. So "net spend" which is Liverpool's justification is about £50-70m, over 2 seasons losing players in their prime replacing them with young players. Even flops like Havertz would reclaim a big fee if sold.
Nice try though.
Nice try though.
True. It's a bit like Leicester City though. They've been spending around £100m per year for the last 4 years, yet are somehow not really regarded as big spenders?
Atletico(and therefore Atleticos), not Athletico (or Athleticos)
Simeone is a really irritating man.
Ever since he tapped Beckham he's been an enemy of English football.
I just cannot stand him!!

Yeah becuase they sold big players to make that money such as griezman and Hernandez and party where as Chelsea spent 200m in one transfer window without selling anyone

Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first-leg encounter will be the sixth time Diego Simeone has managed an Atletico Madrid side against Chelsea.
During his nine years at the club, the longest of any Atletico boss, Chelsea have appointed eight different managers.

re: comment about AM's spend on transfer fees the last 5 years, but them being "good net spenders".
Please, when quoting team's net spend, can you also compare spend on wages, bonuses etc.
Money in, money out, on transfer fees is only part of investment in players.
Maybe football fans should go on an economics or business accounting course to deal with banter in modern day football.

I didn't "quote" net spend. I said they were 'good net spenders' in the context of comparing them with real and Barcelona.
Not sure what the problem with that comment is.
If you'd like a full profit and loss account of a football club, the BBC HYS section isn't the place to go.
