Awesome player and a true gentleman and legend of the game. He ripped the Lions apart in the 2005 tour and played possibly the greatest individual performance of all time in the second Test. A class act.

I'm British but lived in Wellington in 2005 and had the honour of being at that match and witnessing one of the great individual performances of all time, as well as an astonishing team performance to go with it from the All Blacks. A brilliantly fun week in my life having the Lions on tour in the town you live in too...!

Can we please stop this GOAT nonsense. You cannot compare great players from different eras.
Carter was probably the best of his era.
As an Englishman who is old enough to have seen him play no number 10 has excited me more than Barry John, but he'd probably be too small for the modern game.

Carter was undoubtedly excellent but I have trouble gauging how good he was compared to others as he was part of the All Blacks machine. He had such an easy ride in that team. Once in a while a player comes along and changes the game. Dan Carter is such a player. Arguably the greatest 10 to have ever played the game, he had incredible versatility from his kicking game to attacking playmaker and rock in defence. To play for the length of time that he did with the All Blacks is simply incredible.

Enjoy your retirement and thanks for the memories. As a former 10 I used to love, love, love watching him, making the game look too easy - like he was playing at a different speed from others.

Carter would glide round players but had a turn of pace to hit holes when they appeared. Game management, kicking, distribution and a decent defence - Carter had it all.

Best 10 to have ever played the game and a very decent Centre also. Two World Cups and 112 caps for the All Blacks confirm him as an all time great. More importantly, he appears to have retained that balance of charisma, civility and humility.
