Covid: Virus cases are going down across the UK

Data suggests lockdown is working, but the health secretary says there is "still a long way to go".

No doubt the usual lockdown deniers will be on soon, proclaiming their typical spurious holistic claims of ill-defined mental health harms (hint: being unhappy about something and not getting your own way are not actual mental health disorders) among teenagers and criminals and so on, but regardless, here we have it, reiterated; lockdown is working and is saving lives.

Enchanté, and, not being particularly distressed or depressed, and not looking for any sunken pirate treasure in the river either, I see no particular motivation to do that.
Interesting to see the areas where the numbers are still high despite 6 weeks in lockdown, but it wouldn't be appropriate I assume to blame the ethnicity or affluence of those inhabitants, or their inclination to be vaccinated. Removed

"...the four nations of the UK"

How can England be a 'nation' when it doesn't have a parliament, doesn't have an officially recognised national day nor any other trappings of a nation. England as a country ceased to exist with the Act of Union in 1707 and it's remained a fictional entity - defined only in contradistinction to Scotland, Wales and NI - ever since.

It's all very well saying stay at home, IMO people will not stay compliant much longer.

As can be seen form the recent 'BBC sledging' pictures '....Police outnumber by people fed up being shut inside...'. People will not stay locked up much longer no matter what the number say. If we don't see a way out of this matters will take on a life of their own.

The British Best Country in the World Global Leading World Class vaccine seems to be rather ineffective

We would be worse off being in the EU within this situation. The EU residents would all be travelling here for free healthcare, we would also be having to share our created vaccines to the majority of the EU when our country would only get a small minority. We would also have constant EU arguments which would waste time and money on how to handle this awful situation.

No, the people vaccinated are not the spreaders as they are less mobile, the spreaders are the sub-50's who are still working in jobs where they cannot hide away, it will reduce the spread more when they get the jab.

By the way, Gammon = racist term.

The furlough scheme need to be ended now. Its encouraged people not to work or look for work. While the Hard Working Taxpayers continue to pay.

The NHS should move into the American Model of Health Care. Pay for it.

Furlough is for people who have jobs. It's the government paying part of the wages on behalf of the business. It is not universal credit. It is keeping people from losing their jobs because otherwise there would be mass layoffs from businesses unwilling to pay their staff over lockdown. I don't know how you managed to be so mistaken.

Idiot, last time most of the vulnerable had not been vaccinated. If the science is correct, most severe illnesses and deaths will not happen. Further, if you look at the NHS bed statistics, while some young do get sick, this is vastly less than those over 70. We need to look at Sweden in the coming year to judge if you are right. It will be interesting doing a comparison on their excess deaths against other nations to see if the philosophy of limited restrictions was successful. It is too early to make that judgement yet but they did use WHO guidance from day one. BTW the GBD might have had some merit, it added focussed protection into the mix.

Has a long held mistrust of the authorities by BAME people in Britain now become a barrier to resolving the COVID crisis?
top bloke asks,
“Has a long held mistrust of the authorities by BAME people in Britain now become a barrier to resolving the COVID crisis?”

Yes, but the mistrust factor is the only acceptable narrative and so only part of the explanation.

Ideological constraints forbid looking at the different COLLECTIVE IRRATIONAL THOUGHT PRACTICES (a key part of ethnicity) nurtured by specific ethnic groups.

What a pity that the spirit and sacrifices of the civilian population during the Second World War seems to be lacking in this "war" against Covid-19. The nightly fear of bombing, rationing and worry for loved ones fighting on land, at sea and in the air all had an impact. The determination to put up with hardships for the eventual triumph over the enemy brought success. Let us do the same now.

how many people have had the 2nd dose? Govt took a risk going against medical advice to extend 2nd dose to 3 months. 40% of people of who would die, will still die with 1 dose. Doubling/tripling number of infections means we're back to nearly same deaths without any sort of vaccine - very high possibility when people think we're out of the woods already.

Cases are falling not because of vaccines, but because most of the vulnerable with underlying conditions have already passed on to Valhalla. Lockdown, masks, SD avoiding crowds, schools keep the R number down. The other factor is improved treatment & recovery although Long Cov-19 a problem with readmissions. I have decided if offered a jab (most probably AZ) I shall politely decline in favour of a better or less risky offer. Novavax's protein subunit vaccine grown in insect cells sounds a better risk than a viral vector isolated from a Chimp's anus. It also has no genes/mRNA. Unfortunately the vaccine doesn't provide permanent immunity, it may only last 5-6 months. Then theres the issue of new variants and mutations potentially exposing the vulnerable.

We could just give it a few weeks and release lockdown but it could prove very costly. I think we need to start playing a bit safer...the UK is already one of the worst countries in the world for Covid deaths.

My advice to any young person is learn how to work the system.

If you think you're a bit "nuts" then work on it.

Find some woman in the estate (legal) and leave it in for a squirt.

Next day, apply to the council.

This is selfish Britain. You're all on your own

Tins are no good because once you open one you must finish it or it goes bad

To survive in post-berxit-Johnson apocalypse Britain you need foodstuff you can eke out:

Sack of rice
Sack of flour
Drum of vegetable oil
Multivitamin tablets (one per week each)

A family can survive a year with that

But what keeps me awake at night is fresh water and sanitation

I don't know how to do those by myself

CORONAVIRUS may soon, deo volente, be over. Yet, deep wounds will not heal... not for generations.

WE - like other nations - are victims of a war. A war that was never declared, a war without a peace treaty or even an armistice. The enemy has only been driven back... undefeated, unpunished and lives to attack again - when, where, why we cannot say.

Time to ask why was this visited upon us?

If China launched a virus as a weapon, it would have been far more lethal, killed more of working age and not mutated (got to protect your own troops).
Quite apart from the fact that genetic scientists have confirmed that Covid is a natural mutation.
Economic damage has largely been caused by mishandling of the pandemic.

Fergus Ewing, the SNP Minister for Agriculture, yesterday told the NFU that migrant workers will not have to quarantine when entering Scotland this year despite the serious Covid outbreaks at processing plants and factories employing large numbers of migrants in 2020. This makes a total nonsense of the SG's current stance on incoming travellers and the quarantine hotels. Total shambles.
