I agree with you but maybe EJ is feeling pressure and doesn't want to take chances.

If he experiments and England don't get the 4 try bonus point* then England's chances of winning the 6N recede further.

*Another reason why BPs are a questionable idea, they stop coaches from experimenting?

The answer is likely if there is a summer tour, EJ has rarely experimented during the 6N. If you look back to the Argentina tour of 2017 when the "seniors" were on the Lions tour the number of new faces was considerable and a few emerged.

Unfortunately just like the game itself new players who may get a chance will not be playing next week after as its only Italy - which is wrong in itself.

Absolutely, Daly is a liability, can't tackle, kick or break the gain line
11/02/2021 17:58:04 3 1

Malins should be given a go. Daly disappointed in the Autumn internationals (and I get the criticism) but arguably May and Watson put in woeful displays last week and made Daly look relatively better. The performances of May and Watson are the greater concern, usually so electric and exciting, both look very timid and have unfortunately carried their disappointing club form with them.

I am a Scottish fan, but used to advocate a start for Daly. But since he was capped, he has gone badly downhill
11/02/2021 22:59:23 0 0
bbc
Daly is systematically picked out of position: he's the best centre in England. The stats demonstrate that any perceived defensive vulnerability/weakness under the highball as fullback is a myth. He also has a brain, an increasingly rare commodity among England players. Watson is a sublime athlete but gets isolated and is a poor decision maker. May looked a liability last match. Daly best 15 too.

When willEddie drop Owen Farrell who just clogs up the midfield and seems unable to play off the cuff what’s in front of him - as a captain he is a complete nonentity and doesn’t appear able to assess the situation and redirect the team when things are going wrong - get him out completely

Thank god somebody else shares my view. In my opinion he is the problem with England. Everything goes through him and when he has a bad day the whole team does. He is not good enough at 10 and has no ability to adapt to the match situation. Also no pace, no gain line threat and poor tackle technique.

Let's face it. England have a shortage of "leaders" in this squad. Guys who can galvanise or inspire others when things aren't quite going to plan. Itoje, perhaps, but no other name springs to mind.
Back in 2003, there was Catt, Greenwood, Robinson, Leonard, Vickery, Dallaglio, Worsely, Dawson, Wilkinson...

Afraid I have to agree as well - Farrell poses no attacking threat and can be a dangerous liability with his tackle technique. Used to be a world class kicker but even that seems to have drifted. I would rest him and bring in some creativity.
And I would have Itoje as captain. Our most consistent performer and might well grow into the role the way that Johnson did.

I understand that some of these players need more game time as they were obviously lacking in the last match, but he needs to pick for the future. Agree that incremental changes are needed. I would have swapped Malins for Daly, Randall for Youngs (giving him a rest). Okay with the forwards shuffle (prefer Curry 6 and Underhill 7 when fit) and Earl could cover 13, 14, 11 if necessary. BUT the orders must be to get the back-line moving and the ball to the wings. Last chance for the current 10, 12, 13 combination.

Couldn't agree more - what's the point in taking them away from playing each week for their clubs if you just have them training for 8 weeks. They'll get more value from matches than this. Agreed... beginning to look like a stuck record. The reffereeing of the last game broke down at the scrum and the breakdown with a ref who wanted to “impose his will” on the game and that really did throw England! However, Farrell constantly kicked away possession pointlessly... it was like playing club rugby with the local 4th team. No variety, no possession in the backs. Dull

We lose 1 game, Ford comes back & we have to listen to the 'Ford/Farrell axis' conversation AGAIN. Is there a more boring non-topic to listen to than this? Absolutely can’t agree more. EJ has some fantastic players to choose from and this match would be perfect to blood them. Yes England will win. Yes the forwards will dominate. But what will we get out of it!!! How about playing Simmonds at 8. Randall & Simmonds at 9/10. Odogwu in the centre, Malins FB.

Have to agree with you. I may not watch the game either as Jones has stuck with the old guard including Farrell and Youngs who were dire last week and should not be in the squad this week. Randall definitely should be played at S.H. Watson at full back Daly at 12 gives the centres a modicum of pace. Ford at Flyhalf. They MUST stop the box kicking at every breakdown it does not work!

I love an optimist. Youngs many years ago offered a threat by running well and offloading. His ponderous service, often taking a step to generate power, has always been diabolical.
Ford with a fast service is pure class. As are others. Playing a newbie outside Youngs would be a disaster.
Farrell offers nothing. Possibly a marginally higher kick %age than Ford, but hardly significant.

I think sometimes when people criticise his omission they don't have a clear memory of his performance against Ireland in 2018, where he was fairly easily handled by a world class Irish backrow. Ford will steady the ship at 10 and kicks just as well at goal as Farrell and is much more tactical with generally kicking than Farrell. Thus, Farrell is redundant and should be dropped. Lawrence should have been kept to give youngster a fair chance. Who knows he and Slade could well have worked out fine.

England are regressing and style of play is awful. Results in 2020 against teams in transition papered over the cracks. I think part of the problem is the style of play Eddie has imposed on the team, rather than looking at the strengths of the players, the other is his continued selection of players who are either too unfit (BV) or seem too shot/frightened/unwilling to deviate from the gameplan. Italy a perfect game to blood Randall/Odogwu, keep Lawrence, and an 8 that doesn’t look like a Tier 10 2XV player.

What a waste of an opportunity to try out some fresh faces. France put 50 pts on them so with home advantage we must get 60 + If we do, what does it prove. As for Youngs... give me strength. Crap with Leicester & not in the top 3 English 9’s. Another boring Saturday!!

Sadly it matters not a jot which players are picked if the tactics remain same. Ruck, maul, kick and chase.

What? EJs England can ruck, maul and chase kicks. Oh if only they could. Dreaming of them being able to do those things highlights what low expectations I have of this, and I hesitate to use the phrase, 'team'.

What,s EJ frightened of? All he ever does is resort to the old guard when he,s under the cosh, where,s the future stars Eddie?? If Lawrence,Randall,Odogwu etc can,t start or even make the bench against Italy at Twickers then they,ve no chance against France,Ireland or Wales.

Odogwu - never going to pick him. He'd be better off playing for Italy. Lawrence - not sure he's up to it. Disappointing but there it is. Randall - behind a beaten pack would end up thrown into the stands in the first minute. All 3 should go back to there club and play. They don't need a pointless training injury caused with england. Wouldn't be the first time.
