Fret not, he is immortal.

2060 - Steve Smith Junior II is still twitching at the crease as a 77yr old Jimmy Anderson continues to defy logic with a 45 over old cherry, swinging it round corners and making the batsman look like a novice.

Great is an overrated word but somehow isn't quite enough for Jimmy. Genius!

I'd say Woakes is in the same mould as a bowler, less skilled at the moment (but at least a more accomplished batsman) but someone with the clear potential to develop to that standard.

Anderson has been "lucky" in that he's hasn't suffered from long-term injuries and has been able to hone his technique to be very energy-efficient and make those injuries less likely. Coming back from 2 is a boon.

Up to a point, you're correct. It's often the most important win in a long game of cricket. But, in the last decade or more, England would have been all out for 300 or less and lost heavily. They had to cash in on the toss which JR did

Holding and Roberts aren’t even in the argument because they didn’t even take 300 test wickets...so even when you look at the different metrics across the board Jimmy measures up well against any of these fantastic bowlers, also the later part of Anderson’s career he’s not been used a strike bowler

There’s something very special about ‘veterans’ in sport defying the years to continue to perform at the very highest level.
We’ve seen a 43 year old quarterback, Tom Brady, win a record 7th Super Bowl in the NFL, while the 38 year old Jimmy Anderson, continues to knock over the world’s best batsmen in Test cricket.

Was interesting to hear Cook talk about the declaration. He said the England staff will have studied how and when wickets had fallen, the state of the ball etc. He suspected they wanted to make India start twice with the ball hard. Hence limiting the overs with it on day 4, so it would still be hard when the bowlers were fresh on Day 5. We forget that these things are analysed to the nth degree.

The only one i'd disagree with is number 2; I still didn't see anything in the match that suggested Root is a good captain - I don't mean this to be attacking on Root as he's a fantastic batsman and i would prefer he was allowed to just concentrate on that (and do more bowling). He is a very average and uninspiring captain though, and I don't mean the declaration, I agree with that entirely.

It is of course fantastic that this was on terrestrial TV and has inspired your children, we all want that I am sure, but not sure it's Sky's intentions to turn cricket into a minority sport. They're not evil, just a business. It's up to the ECB to find a balance between utilising Sky's money (and superb broadcast) whilst also bring the game back to the masses.

Get on Google, search for your local cricket club. Head on down there. If they have nets your kids will be able to have a go. Buy a couple of cheeky beers at the bar. Ok you'll not see the best players in the world but unless your watching on TV or your the umpire (me) you can't tell that Anderson reversed the ball.

Getting to watch Tests has certainly changed. I remember going to Lord's and The Oval. Got there at 8 am and queued to get in. Lord's had some free seats or you cld sit on the grass. OK it was over 50 years ago but I wouldn't know how to watch a Test now. Certainly no free seats I wld think.

I wondered what comment would be issued. Why bother?
Critics issue good analysis. Let’s start with the obvious 20 wickets needed to win a match. Achieved. Never? Ridiculous hyperbole.
Then lucky. There is minimal luck in scoring over 500 if the opposition aren’t dropping catches.
Or in hitting the stumps by beating the bat.
Wow...don’t people say some stupid things? You seem to have fully paid up membership to that club. Well done. Idiot. Removed

Great performance throughout by Jimmy. Contrast that with Archer, who could only dismiss a no-hoper. Jofra is a decent cricketer, but if you are going to pick him, only pick him for white ball cricket. Compared to Broad and Anderson, and other fast bowlers, Jofra isn't up to the required standard. His logic didn’t make sense, if he knew the pitch was poor enough to bowl India out quickly, then it wasn’t good enough to get the score he set. I think he was too cautious in not declaring sooner, but he captained well and England were the best team.

Exactly. As JR explained, and the commentary mentioned at the time on D4, he wanted a new ball to still be hard at start of D5. So that means only a relatively few overs on D4 for fresh bowlers. Simple to work out from there.

Bit disappointed with India's loss but Jimmy Anderson - Take a bow Legend !! and Congrats England !!

Redefining longevity of fast bowlers at 38 years in the subcontinent and setting the benchmark for future generations.

Would be great to see him play till 40 and get to 700 test wickets. Truly deserving!!

A fit 40 years old can easily bowl 9 overs in an innings. So as long as England have others bowlers carrying the main burden he can play. Perhaps as a first change bowler?

Great performance throughout by Jimmy. Contrast that with Archer, who could only dismiss a no-hoper. Jofra is a decent cricketer, but if you are going to pick him, only pick him for white ball cricket. Compared to Broad and Anderson, and other fast bowlers, Jofra isn't up to the required standard. He was also meant to bat a bit. Well Archer's contribution with a bat has been abysmal. Drop him.

Anderson is probably the greatest bowler of his type to have played the game. He has thrived in India when other great fast bowlers haven't. Skill and adaptability have been the key. A true master of his craft. One in the eye for Warne et al who were criticising the tactics yesterday. England got it spot on and whilst they may still lose the series they are a strong team
