Another enthralling day’s cricket! There was some good strategy from Root -especially to Kohli -and good that he backed Leach -bringing him on against new batsman. But he needs to avoid spin at both ends against Pujara & Pant. Pujara has a ridiculous record against spin -but not pace -he was roughed up by Jimmy! Pant’s footwork against spin was glorious -but with pace he was rooted to the spot

Decent day for England. Archer remains an enigma. Great first spell, then gradually tires. Not a batsman by any means except in 20/20 thrash, and is a dodgy fielder. He needs to build his stamina if going to last as a long-term test player.

Archer hasn't yet batted well in a test, but has done more than those below him at county 2nd XI level. Maybe he just needs to get set although, until that happens, I like the idea of Leach coming in earlier to just stick around with whichever batsman is left. The first ball he got yesterday would have succeeded against plenty of regular batsman.

Thx Saddle. Sky Sports is very expensive - to many people - hence the wave of enthusiasm for C4's FREE coverage. If you really miss the extra yakking you get on Sky, check a footy match, you can hear 'experts' (haha) waffling before the match about what you might see, during it (telling you what the Laws - that they don't know - might be) and after it, what you just saw anyway. All a waste.

Believe this South Asian tour(inc SL) is going to cement Dom Bess as the main spinner in the English line up and rightly so. Consistent lines and great temperament.

I really think Joe Root MUST bowl himself more - he has a knack of getting wickets at the right time and he zips it through quickly. Also, I think Dan Lawrence should bowl a bit more, especially because Leach has been poor....

And yet Leach was getting prodigious movement late on. Witness the two reviews, both of which moved quite a distance but produced too much bounce. Plus that ball that went for four byes, having eluded both the batsman and the 'keeper.

If I have a week off work, it usually takes me a couple of days to get back into the rhythm of things.

Like the rest of the team, Leach's preparation for this match consisted of sitting in a hotel room in quarantine for six days, followed by three nets.

I think in those circumstances we can make some allowances. And as Rsuppards says, there were positive signs towards the end of the day.

200 would likely give England an unassailable lead, but might take too much time out of the game. I say 100. Setting them roughly 300-350 to win. Dangle the carrot, hopefully the pitch turns hugely and provides variable bounce and they fall chasing. Would be a nail-biter though, wouldn’t bet against India chasing - especially after their last win. Love test cricket!

Poor captaincy from Root yet again.
Left Leach on far too long when shelling runs, and let India get into a position to take time out of the game.
Not enough fielders close to the bat whilst defending 578, what is there to worry about if you concede the odd boundary.

His captaincy was actually good today. Managed the bowlers well, not pressuring anyone too much and rotating. He changed fielding positions based on the batsmen and the bowlers.
Following on wouldn't be advisable. If India manage to make a good lead We can't be batting last on this pitch which is turning in to a bunsen.

Leach had only bowled three overs - take him off and
a) destroy his confidence for the very long series ahead. b) have to bring back Archer, Anderson or Stokes and exhaust them for following on.
c) Bowl himself, having just batted for two days d) Do exactly what Pant wants. Leach is bowling into the rough. 570 on the board - someone swinging at 70-4 - great. Bad captaincy from Root? No.

Very unfortunate that Rashid's shoulder won't stand up to test match cricket. He had an op on it last year so fingers crossed.

The coverage might not be as good as sky but it's such a big deal that it's on terrestrial telly. I'd take a silent, single camera feed to be honest, the cricket itself should be (and is) enough.

Considering they only had a few days to set things up it's not bad - I am sure that 4 might tweak things before the next test - like Sir Alastair Cook but reserving judgement on the rest but just delighted it is back on free tv

In what way is the coverage not as good? I record from 4am and start watching around 8:30, fast forwarding through the lunch/tea breaks, adverts, and when they faff about too long for reviews or something else. In between I see cricket, recorded by the same cameras as everyone else (I assume), which is all I want to see.

I believe that ch 4 stream it from Indian broadcasters so they can't really be blamed too much. Just be thankful it's on free to air again.

At least people can watch rather than pay rip off Sky. As a junior coach it’s sickening that cricket isn’t of free to air. Hoping the exposure will get a few more children playing this summer.

One thing crossing Root's mind must be, what happens if the Indians follow on and smash a quickfire 400-450. Rohit/Pant can take the game away from England in a couple of sessions. And if so, I wouldn't fancy England batting last on that pitch...

Poor captaincy from Root yet again.
Left Leach on far too long when shelling runs, and let India get into a position to take time out of the game.
Not enough fielders close to the bat whilst defending 578, what is there to worry about if you concede the odd boundary.
No doubt he won't make them follow-on either, giving them even more time to kill the game.

Let’s hope the pitch really starts to come apart tomorrow. England need to get early wickets tomorrow and enforce the follow on, we need to take ten wickets tomorrow and then we are well in the box seat for a win but even eight wickets we have a good chance. Some Archer, Stokes and Jimmy magic, one of those three to knock over one or two first thing. A win would be huge but lots still to do.

Well its been off free to air for 15 years now so players like Sam Curran, Dom Bess, Ollie Pope, Dan Lawrence etc probably never saw it for free yet they turned into top players, i would blame schools more than tv broadcasters for not playing cricket and premier league football has been off free to air for nearly 30 years yet people still play football
