A liitle strange to me an Indian attack with three seamers and only two spinners

Likewise. With their spin capabilities, seeing that other spinner who be a delight.

By the time his career ends, Shubman Gill will be in there.

Great spot! He reminds me of a right handed BC Laura in his ability, confidence and timing...plus cooool!! Threw his wicket away through oozing strength/confidence. Seems the type who can score big if he wants to.

No Harbhajan or Ganguly in options? Not sure either gets into the side, but to not include them is bizarre. Pujara is talented and should have a stellar career, but "Dada" had a serious playing record, and as captain, laid a lot of the foundations in changing the mentality of the side for Dhoni to capitalise on!

I'm always surprised that Manoj Prabhakar is never name checked on these occasions. Very talented player, better than his stats suggest.

Should be an option of playing 2 all-rounders & 1 fast bowler with the overwhelming picked Dev being 2nd quick for tests in India when 3 spinners would be better. Ashton, Kumble & Bedi would be the perfect spin combination.
Also too soon to pick Bumrah in this shortlist, (despite me believing he will One day walk into the greatest ever side), he’s not done enough yet.

Entirely agree. He was a very elegant batsman. any overseas batsman who could score centuries at lords on 3 successive tours should at least be a candidate. Even Bradman didn't do that!

Impossible to compare players from different periods. Not many today would have seen Mohammad Nissar bowl but his captain c K Nayadu said was faster than Harold Larwood of bodyline fame. Similarly the feats of all rounder Vinoo Mankad are legendary.

... Not quite impossible!! How else do you explain The Don as the best bat?! Sunil Gav faced the best of spin through to many of the greatest fast bowlers ever. NUFF said! Kapil Dev and Dhoni oooze class, no matter what generation. When the likes of IVA Richards or Sir Garfield Sobers name you as tough, skilled opponents, that's gold bar recommendation :))

BA Chandra, Pujara, Shami, Ishant & Azhar ommisions seem the toughest calls!! Bumrah as the pace partner of Z Khan seems the most fortuitous call. I'm very impressed with Pujara. The Wall's brilliant replacement. MS Dhoni, Sunil & Tendulkar plus Kapil represent the mother of all Indian shoe ins for this stellar team. Still, I'd back West Indies' team to top em aaaall!! :)) Thanks for this HYS!!

Yes, perhaps a WI team of: Greenidge, Haynes, Richards, Weekes, Lara, Sobers, Dujon, Marshall, Roberts, Garner & Gibbs would take some beating. And that's leaving out the likes of; Holding, Walcott, Worrell, Richardson, Croft, Lloyd, Headley, Kanhai, etc, etc.

Well, some rather silly options given. Impossible to pick both Jadeja & Kapil Dev, who should have been included in the quicks. Pant not an option as best Wicket-keeper, who has the best batting average & best dismissals per match. Harbajhan not an option. Here's my team if these options had been included: Gavaskar, Sehwag, Dravid, Kohli, Tendulkar, Pant, Jadeja, Ashwin, Kapil Dev, Kumble, Bumrah.

Perhaps not surprisingly this is somewhat skewed to modern players. No less a cricketer than Gary Sobers said Gupte was the best spinner he faced but outside India I doubt people remember him. The problem is the captaincy. Tendulkar and Gavaskar have poor records as captain. Presumably its Dhoni. Perhaps when running future polls more could be said about players from before 1970 to even it up

Accepting some of the comments about players from pre 70s, I actually found this fairly straightforward. Top 5 pick themselves, as do Kapil and Dhoni. Bowlers a bit more problematic but Kumble and Bedi feel right. Khan or Sharma with Jasprit.

Good comments by Collis & Jonathan - inevitably these polls get skewed by younger voters who simply never knew the oldies. Bedi, Prasanna, Venkat & Chandra - to name but 4 - would beat more recent spinners off the park, but few people younger than me (57) have even heard of them!
Of the same vintage, Gavaskar was one of the best openers to ever face a ball, & Viswanath was also sheer class.

I must agree with boating-voter.

The young outweigh the wrinkly by too much.

Prasanna, world-class off-spinner, Chanda yet another, Bedi probably the best over the two aforementioned. Bowlers about right, Keepers about right, but Azha was wonderful and deserved far more votes, Engineer deserved a place in the openers, Gavaskar the greatest of all.
