Coronavirus: Motorists 'turned back' at Irish border
08/02/2021 | news | world | 2,310
People crossing the Irish border without "a reasonable excuse" can be fined €100 (£88) from Monday.
What a joke the Irish Gov are. It's a pity the Garda weren't so diligent around the border during the 70's and 80's. Never to be seen within miles of the border basically giving terrorists freedom to come and go as they pleased Removed
Due to similar historical circumstances and geopolitical situation ( between two powerful neighbours) I identify with the Irish till my last breath though have both passports on the top of my Polish one.
So I put it this way....please tell us more about this topic. Cover the last 700 years. The wind that shakes the barley.

It's a pity you can't forgive/forget events of 40 years ago and prefer to open old sectarian wounds.

I have no doubt the Garda, at the time with the tools available, did the best they could to protect people on both sides of that terrible divide.
Meanwhile those that cross illegally from France for economic reasons get vaccines and an amnesty. Wonderful isn't it Removed

As long as the UK government fines those from Ireland crossing the border to NI without legitimate reasons then this sounds sensible to slow the spread. The message is stay at home!

Out for a walk this morning at 7am and too many cars on the main road means people are ignoring the rules. I'd like the police to put up blockades to ask people what they are doing. Invalid excuse -> FINE them.

Good try. Giving half the facts to make your point seem valid.

You should have said: "No it is not allowing them to cross the border WITHOUT A VALID REASON" which brings it in line with the travel policies of RoI & UK - neither of which allow non-essential travel without fines.

Not political, simply an enforcement of regulations on both sides.

Conspirisists will always see what they want to
The 'valid reason' would be 'exercising your right to travel across the border as enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement.

You now, the one that was so important we had to have a 'border' in the middle of the Irish Sea to appease them under threat of the IRA kicking off again.

Perhaps you should watch The View From Stormont...which aired last night at 10.45.

It's available on the ITV hub.
Ah, so not The View then, an entirely different program on ITV.

No need to watch it now, you’ve ruined the “surprise “ by telling me the ending.

As I said, it pains and saddens me that some people celebrate the disadvantages of others. These are not appropriate sentiments for the newly self appointed “champions of the oppressed “. No gold star from Connolly for you.

But I didn't tell you 'the ending'. The old 'Connolly' trope is a tad tired and stale too.

I wonder why the lid's put on Britains activities here until those most affected are no longer around?
You'd think they had something to be ashamed of?

There's a 'legion of proof' for your assertions, but it won't be public for 40 years? Inside information? Hilarious.

I remember Muller trying to get you to condemn bloody sunday & you couldn't. You lied about Anna Lo.
You only fool yourself

The EU don't give the Gardai, or any police force in the EU, any mandate.
That doesn't even make sense.

Who said the GFA wouldn't prevail?
What has the GFA got to do with Gardai covid checks?

I'm not desperate i live here, follow this and understand it. Do you?
My nationalism is irrelevant. Do you actually believe only nationalists wanted to remain in the EU?
This is the Endgame.
