It's frustrating, he's a decent bat at county level and had fun swishing the bat in the IPL, but doesn't seem to know what to do at test level. Demotion below Leach might be the kick up the bum he needs.

TBF that ball he got first up today would have done for many a better batsman than he. Reverse swing, just back of a length and hits top of off stump. Would have got some of the top order out I reckon.

It was a good ball but his feet were nowhere and he really does play some lazy shots. Anyone who bats 9-11 should be told to just try and get to 15 and if there is a frontline batman at the other end, the difference in the scorecard can be the difference between winning and losing. Leach has only made 6 off 28 balls but with a good number 8 at the other end (Bess) they have already put on 30.

I saw Geoffrey Boycott, at mid off, drop one like that at the Oval in the 1970s. A young Aussie called Dirk Wellham, playing in his maiden test match, was on 99. I really wondered if Boycott was normally so kind to an Aussie. But everyone drops the occasional sitter.

Par score on that wicket up first, nothing more. Only 3 batsmen have impressed against an attack which if you took out Bumrah and Ashwin is very modest. I used to rate Pope but he looks woeful, making no sense of leaving JB at home. Good C4 coverage if without the bells and whistles of Sky. Need an option to turn off the stump mic so we don't have to listen to the inane Pant.

Magnificent innings by Root yet _again_. I've typed this so many times its saved on my keyboard. His bowling may also be crucial.
In tests, you can't predict results. The game changes in a matter of moments, especially against India.
If someone offered us 555 at the beginning of our innings we would have snatched it. But after being 387-3 it seems below par.
Bring tomorrow on!

Mention for Stokes's batting. Transferring the pressure from England to the bowlers. Buttler helped stabilise things a bit, thought with some luck.
What is Archer doing coming in so high up the order?

What a brilliant innings by Captain Root, most of his shots were out of the top drawer. I think our batting improved a little. Now for our bowlers Root might have to bowl a few overs though, we will have to see India are similar to England. If we get 2 main batsmen out it could be easier, let’s hope the spinners can get some movement and a good line. It’s hope Archer can get a good Line & Length

With England only selecting 4 specialist bowlers including Bess and Archer i'd say we have an extremely low chance of taking 20 wickets.
The selectors were scared of India and picked 7 batsmen.
Should have picked 6 and then picled Jimmy, Broad, Woakes (or Wood), Leach and Moeen !

they showed snicko, yes it was like 10 mins later but remember channel 4 can't travel to India, they just get pictures sent to them from the broadcasters in India. therefore this was not channel 4s fault - a sky production or anyone else would be showing the exact same images. Also, snicko showed he was out

Problem is with Nass and Athers, they come across as jealous and spiteful because they played in teams that couldn’t win the ashes.

Hussain in particular reminds me of Stuart Barnes in Rugby Union, bitter.
Atherton always has a slightly pseudo intellectual, dismissive air to him. He’s commenting on cricket, not his days at Cambridge.

England to win this on day 5. Poor selection from the Indian team & kohli as captain ruins the dynamics of the team. Indian cricket has been plagued with primdonnas & the sooner they are rooted out of Indian cricket the better. There was a reason why Dhoni & Rahane got the best out the Indian teams. They never thought too much of themselves whereas for Kohli it’s always about him & not the team.

Strong DAy - great stuff - well done Root (& Stokes, entertaining, but wobbly here and there)
DAy 3 - Englands - perhaps by similar margin (overall) to yesterday
Now to the bowlers tomorrow - 30-60 mins to bat, well done Leachy
Will the pitch break up in the center - lets hope so - think Anderson will wear them down, Archer blast a few out, and Leach get enough turn

Magnificent innings by Root yet _again_. I've typed this so many times its saved on my keyboard. His bowling may also be crucial.
In tests, you can't predict results. The game changes in a matter of moments, especially against India.

Shush, you are not allowed to mention Woakes - it is clear he is treated differently to other senior players. His average and strike rate is better than Archer, Wood or Curran, yet he still finds himself at the bottom of the queue for each series. Only 3 away Tests in 3.5 years is an embarrassing miss-use of his skills. By the way, in his last 2 away Tests he got 7 wickets at 25.He bats as well.

Well I agreed with. Not sure why more teams don’t bat into the third day. It better than the possibility of batting at the end of the fifth day. It also tiers out the opposition.

I think that the usual reason for not batting on into the 3rd day, is that sides are normally out within one and a half days.

30 degrees, 2 potentially indifferent spinners only 3 seam bowlers (1 of them permanently an injury risk), of whom Archer is easily the youngest, so lots of overs to bowl methinks. Is that really archer's role?

What a brilliant innings by Captain Root, most of his shots were out of the top drawer. I think our batting improved a little. Now for our bowlers Root might have to bowl a few overs though, we will have to see India are similar to England. Agreed. I’ve always wondered how they can justify this appalling “cricket social”, which has on occasions had 12 pundits, plus technical support, when losing out in the broadcast rights.

If they believe, as they do, they are “the home of cricket”, then they should push the boat out and secure the rights.

Same for the TV. Cant they spend £7 million like Channel 4 did? Maybe lose Shearer instead?

To be fair, Test Cricket was for the niche audience back in the late 80's/90's, especially given the poor team at the time - it's not the product that is the problem - it's the lack of attention span, availability of short term distractions and the general pace of life that prevents the average Josephine/Joseph from having the time to commit to 5 days of sport as well as 5 days of work, if lucky!
