Joe Root marks his 100th Test with a commanding century as England make an impressive start to the first Test against India.

Shame the best result we can hope for is a draw. We aren't taking 20 Indian wickets on this pitch.

Sibley had a higher control % and gave less chances than Root prior to receiving that reversing Yorker from Bumrah. Certainly a more limited shot range but still very impressive and how many overs has he put in the Indian bowlers legs that will pay dividends not just later in this match but in the next one too?

Brilliant Innings from both Root and Sibley, who was brilliant in his first ever test in India. I feel that we need to get over 550/600 to win this game as we know what India's batters can do. Another good performance by England. On this flat pitch 263-3 looks a lot better than a crash bang wallpaper 350-7 or 8. Great base for Stokes, Buttler to score quick.

Beautiful innings by Root again. Lawrence stepping up got a good ball (he is a better player than we have seen so far so hope he developed), Sibley laid the solidity, unlucky to get out last over.

Looks like another good test

This has draw written all over it. Even by Indian pitch standards this pitch is non existence, no life or bounce at all, evidence by the lack of parry to the wicket keeper or slips.

None the less an enjoyable day, England slightly ahead but the Indian bowlers just continued doing their job and got their reward at the end.

About Root not being able to convert, everybody who said that over the last few years was right but that doesn't mean Root can't address the issue and improve. Thankfully he seems to be doing that.

I think his lack of ODI and T20 cricket in 2020 has really helped. It's noticeable that he is no longer trying to deflect everything to third man and has remembered all his other shots.

Fantastic start for England -Root is in ridiculous form with the bat and Sibley was the perfect foil. Great from Burns too considering he’d had no cricket.

Bowling will be harder -Root needs to back Leach. England have only won 4 series here, and each time a slow left armer has taken most wickets. He got it all wrong with Ansari last time -barely bowled him. But a great prospect of a series!

I wanted to say that I was impressed by how Sibley was just playing his natural game and not worrying about the fact Root was scoring twice as quick as him and was happy to bat time but that last ball of the day scuppered things!

Still, he was there for near 300 balls and has worn out the India bowlers, good to put some miles in their legs right away with 4 tests in quick succession.

05/02/2021 11:53:35 18 4

I think the issue with his natural game (having been able to watch it on tv!) is that he deflects Ashwin and Sundar into leg with the bat facing the umpire. If he faced the turn of the ball, he could push the slow right armers through the gaps in off, and accumulate more runs.

Allan Lamb wasn’t a natural against spin, but he used that tactic against India in 1990 to great effect

Let’s not give the Aussies oxygen by baiting them - the best way to encourage them to bring back decency and sportsmanship to their game is to applaud the mutual respect we saw today - and in Sri Lanka - the Aussies have great role models in the recent past like Glenn McGrath etc who are still revered - the young Aussie bloods just need guidance

Thx Jon, by "bastardised baseball" I take it you mean 20-20, or the suggested new 'Hundred' format, even shorter? Leaving aside that Baseball is nothing like any of them (both teams get 9 innings, just for one), the success of 20-20 for drawing crowds & TV is well-documented. Test cricket still has its place, but the world has changed since Grace, Hobbs, Bradman & Compton, perhaps you should too?

A super day of Test cricket, Burns i think will learn from his mistake after all he's had a long time not batting under such pressure, Lawrence has learned a valuable lesson, the young man seems to be strong mentally in 2nd innings runs are expected. Sibley has stuck to his task, was it tiredness that did for him in the end? us watching have no idea how tiring batting all day is. Root superb again

Good knock by JR on his 100 Test and supported well by Sibley.

Burns doing well until the rush of madness but steady opening score.

Great play from Root and Sibley - but England's position is still fragile. The next two batsmen haven't played for ages so Root making a second start tomorrow morning will be critical.

A bit harsh, not sure Kohli did a huge amount wrong. If Root gets out early tomorrow and Stokes, Pope or Buttler fail to get in England could still easily find themselves with a 100-200 run first inning deficit. Judge the man after 5 days.

Never had a problem with Tavare. Sibley's innings has meant Ashwin has had to bowl well over 20 overs on the first day and helped Joe to a 200 run partnership. If England make Ashwin bowl over 50 overs in this innings he'll be less effective if England bat again.

Only the fickle thought Root's batting dip from captaincy was a permanent scar. Those who know cricket knew he would come good again with the bat - too good to stay down for long. Root only became captain in 2017 - he also became a father in that year, got married in 2018, and had another child in 2020. He took on a lot of responsibility at once. Now he's maturing.

Do you understand anything about test match cricket (rhetorical) Stokes is a quick bowling all-rounder, you do not bat him at 3, because he could be batting in the first over, after having just bowled 20 plus overs (and he doesn't want to bat there-ditto Root) Lawrence is a very talented young cricketer thrown into the 3 berth, and he got a jaffa …. go back to watching football ¯\_(?)_/¯

England need to bat out four more sessions. Should be 600 by then and the Indians will be getting a deteriorating wicket.

England shouldn't even be thinking about how much longer they should bat. Just play every ball on its merits.

Good toss to win and a superb innings by Joe Root. He and Sibley made the most of it. Pitch is flat and seems good to bat. Hard to tell what a good 1st innings totla. Is. As an Indian fan, Its just annoying to see Joe Root get the rub of the green in terms of toss against India in tests. Virat Kohli has won 0 tosses against Root in 5 tests-5 away

Isn't it brilliant? My seven year old started her day over breakfast by asking if I'd change the channel. I refused of course. Within ten minutes she was asking about the rules of the sport and showing a genuine interest.

Kohli is such a poor captain. Ajinka Rahman’s was truly inspiring in Australia. He should be leading this team.

An excellent first day for England but the next batters must not make the mistake of trying to accelerate too quickly. We need some more of the discipline shown by Root and Sibley and although Stokes,Pope and Butler are perfectly capable of this it not their usual method. I think a lot depends on Stokes. But so far so good.

Great start and another superb innings from Joe, but it’s just the first day and I’d imagine that we need a bare minimum of 550 to bowl at.

That's how Cricket should be played in the sub continent, patient, take the gloss of the new ball and then build into an innings.

Well payed Root and Sibley who anchored the innings and gave Root the license to play the shots

Also VK has a poor reputation due to his temperament however lots of sportsman showed this test, it was good to see VK helping root with cramp -set the tone for the series

Agreed, being played in the right spirit at the moment. Nice to see after that awful display by Australia in India's last test series. And anyway, riling up the Indians is not agood idea.
I even saw Vikram smile once, he usually looks like he's just about to explode.

In fairness, VK's attitude & sportsmanship has improved immensely against both Australia & England. He is now a classy person as well as classy batsman. If anything, it has made him a better batsman, this last couple of years.

Among the other positives about this test, England finally seems to have shaken off the need to start every test series by being absolutely hopeless in the first few days. Sibley is showing his class, Root is dominating, all good to see.
