Sarries haven't played a game tbf! On that basis expect them all to be blowing hard after 40mins. I fear an ambush with England ripe for the taking. That may not be the worst outcome in the long run though. Brilliant to have some rugby to talk about though. Good luck to all

Every team kicks the ball a lot.. none more so than the All Blacks. And nobody can say they don't play attractive rugby! Interestingly Russell kicks more than Ford and Farrell too but these tend to be far more attacking kicks. It's the type of kicks being made that is the difference, not the volume.

Aside form the spectacular 38-38 draw recently, every Calcutta Cup is a dreary affair. England will play safe, and then kick to gain ground (normally ineffectively) and the Scots will disrupt at every opportunity. Its the standard template, so I'm afraid your prediction of a kicking game is probably on the mark sadly.

I prefer running rugby, but you can't deny that England's tactic of kicking the ball into dangerous areas and then penning the opposition in with strong tackling is effective. However if the kicking isn't accurate and the chase and tackling aren't good it does give the opposition a chance to counter attack. Looking forward to a good game.

I couldn’t agree more. In recent games England have been so predictable making them easy to defend against. Variety is what breaks defences but what do we know compared to £1M a year EJ and his team of coaches.
They accuse fans of not understanding the nuances of the kicking game. I would point to a dire game against Wales when Eng were behind but Farrell kicked the ball away every time......

Running from everywhere looks nice, but doesn't necessarily win games at international level. In large part due to new stricter breakdown laws. Of course when it's on those decision makers need to be aware, but it's not as simple as let's play a running game. Just look at the year Wales had when trying to adapt to a more 'free flowing' style.

Yep ITV shows all the England games, but apparently in the 1st meeting where the BBC & ITV met to decide who got the home games for which team, ITV wanted England as their no. 1 priority. Which makes sense for them, England has the largest population = means largest audience = larger ad revenue. They'd spent days preparing their case, only to find that the BBC's 1st pick was the Wales games.

He has an 'employer' if he has a contract with them, even if it is just one game. If they are paying him to do a job to standards that they can describe in the contract and expect, he should fulfil them.

I am not commenting on his percieved bias, but I do find him a bit irritating - which I simply put down to his 'style'. That's a personal view, obviously!

No Willis but places for Youngs and Daly worry me. 2019 we got properly done with the same back row. Hopefully Youngs can remember how to pass quickly and semi accurately. Daly as well as being next to useless in the air was also anonymous in the autumn. Despite all that the pack should surely deliver us enough territory to win.

Worth noting that the 2019 game England had lost Itoje to injury vs Ireland, and that the bench vs Scotland included Moon, Hughes and Shields. Hopefully Obano, Lawes, Earl, LCD will add more impetus.

An oft made fallacy.

Actually, a rest from playing does people good in a crowded calendar with overplaying being a serious problem.

Argentina had not played a game in months, living in lock-down for months on end, and then came out and beat the All Blacks in their first game. Can't do better than that.

Farrell Jr is Eddie Jones' captain. We know from experience that means Eddie will stick with him whatever happens. He is Eddie Jones' first name on the team sheet whether we like it or not.

As for Billy, there is no for like for like replacement waiting in the wings.

He is the only specialist no 8 in the squad.

Whether you like him or not, and many don't, the first name on the teamsheet in modern international rugby is the guy who's going to kick the penalties for you. You build the team around that. Farrell has the odd miss, but he's consistent. I'd rather have him than Marcus Smith for example, who is expansive but callow.

That's the problem with having so many foreign players in the club sides in the premiership and pro 14! It's good to have some for experience but when you have so many it inhibits the nurturing of home grown players! Having 12 sides in prem you would of thought there would be more natural 15s about than a converted centre!

You see, I don't buy that too many foreigners line for England. It hasn't stopped us developing large numbers of exciting 10s (Smith, Simmonds, Umaga just waiting for their chance) or back rowers or props (no other side in the world could cope as well as us when playing our 3rd choice prop) so why is it such slim pickings at 15?

Every time I see Henry Slade's name on the Team Sheet, I place my head in my hands.

He's not big enough, he's not quick enough, his handling is not good enough; his defence is not good enough...he is not good enough. Anybody who thinks otherwise is blindly mistaken.

He is the weakest of links; he does one positive thing per Tournament and that bizarrely guarantees his selection for 12 months.

I guess Eddie Jones is hoping to turn Henry Slade into England's version of Conrad Smith. A very long way to go but by building the right partnership it could happen.

Looking at that back line and Scotland's likely choices I know which I would sooner have. That said the English pack can sometimes be pretty unbeatable. Good Scottish pack this time but can they get the sort of parity that might allow the backs to shine? The pessimist in me worries about some of the nice things being said about Scotland from unlikely quarters. Expectation often does for us.

Saracens players will be rusty sure but because they've had a long break will be relatively fresh compared to most other players.

This should bode well as the tournament goes on.

Can't be underestimated how taxing it must be on the body to play so many games and with such physicality.

It's why squads in general matter so much. Not just individuals.

Bit of the problem with the Italy game is do you use it to blood young players (and seeing how many young England qualified guys get snapped up by other sides we need to be capping players like Randall to stop them going elsewhere) but then tournaments can come down to points difference and that's the game where you can rack them up, so you want your best team out for it.
