Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his side were "not fresh enough, mentally and physically" as Brighton consigned them to a second straight home defeat.

No doubt with many first team starts missing will have an impact. However deep defensive sides are not a new phenomenon this season; he has faced this previously and has learnt absolutely nothing from it. He played a diamond against West Ham that worked well so why drop it? He did the same thing with Minamino; was having a good game against Palace and then nowhere to be seen.

I agree that more teams are sitting deeper, absorbing pressure, and then trying to counter or sneak a result late.

But Brighton did not do that tonight! They had more shots, looked better in attack and deserved the win.
Also why is it that people will use that stupid expression "park the bus" if Spurs play on the counter, yet every other team is "sitting deep"?

Liverpool have failed to show that unstoppable momentum of Shankly and Paisley. These are top fee earning athletes and not facing the 24/7 every day of the uniformed services; if one is tired you still move on and win. There is a definite chance they will not be in the top four with Manchester United and Manchester City and Leicester, West Ham and Everton involved. Transfer time beckons for many.

Matches, even seasons, don't exist in a vacuum. Try it sometime.

Play enough high-leverage matches, as 'mentality monsters' Liverpool did for 2 years, you try and skate when it's Burnley or Brighton. It happens in every sport, even in less competitive leagues.

City stumbled last year, after having won the final 14 the prior season. Banter was about Pep being 'found out.' Found out what, exactly?

Glad it took him until now to notice. I get that the injuries factor. But, it became apparent, after they finally lost a match last year, when everyone was fit, that they were bored.
While Liverpool lead the big 6 mini-league, so many matches against lower sides have served as trap games.

my friend even saying that to these denizens of the bottom of a pond wont make them see sense. We dont have a defence, never in PL history has the entire back-line been injured so we bring in kids or move better players to fill the gaps, do people think it doesn't change how a team plays! We have lost our way against deep defending teams but brighton deserved the win we should have done better.

Sloppy in possession with not enough urgency in attack. Origi and oxlade Chamberlain could have left the pitch 10 minutes early and it would have been hard to notice. Brighton had a game plan and executed it well. Nowhere near good enough if want to win the league.

Agreed. I've no idea why Origi is still at the club and the Ox was anonymous. He was jogging around the pitch instead of giving it his all. We play with a style that demands 100% effort of the time. We don't have the nous to break down dogged teams if we aren't at it absolutely. I hear all the usual stuff on here, but we are missing Hendo and Fabinho in midfield most of all.

Maybe, but Liverpool haven't been conceding many goals in this poor run. They just aren't scoring goals. In fact, I'm pretty certain that Fabinho and Henderson as Centre Backs have conceded fewer per game then before. They were at full strength back when they lost 7-2, and I think Fabinho and Henderson have done surprisingly well as CB's

In terms of the supply line to the front-3, I think there have been a lot of possession, shots created, etc. It's surprising how the front-3 and attacking mid-fielders haven't been scoring much, but they have struggled to break teams down creatively (Minamino is not the answer imho).

You're right - we are too one dimensional. The only defence I would offer for that at the mo is the number of injuries, which means we don't have enough options to try too many different tactics. But if we can get most of the players back, we need to get some ''Plan B's and even Plan C's'' going. The squad should be talented enough to do that.
04/02/2021 13:40:51 1 0

Klopp did have a plan B - he was called Thiago and was brought so Liverpool could change their tactics if required. But due to injuries and a loss of team form it has not worked. Despite the injuries there are too many players out of form like Firmino, Origi, Chamberlain who could have affected the game. Cohesion has gone. Hopefully they can now play freely without any fear and get back the confidence

I agree with you, but whenever Klopp has played Minamino he has not played to his strengths.

If Minamino was not on loan, they would probably have put him in the box and fired crosses at his head all night, all whilst he was marked by a player three times his height.

The guy makes Warwick Davis look like a giant among men, and everytime he plays they hoof long balls at him like he was Crouch.

This is the first comment that actually references what Liverpool are doing. Mates of mine keep asking if Origi is maybe a love child of Klopp's, after what we have seen what can i say. The illogicality of playing someone who is useless against Taki astounds me, now Taki is loaned out so i wish him well, just wish we got rid of Origi, spends more time on his arse than playing football?

I agree there is no plan B. The mid-tier sides seem to have worked out how to stop Liverpool. Good for them. Klopp needs a plan B. And he needs better players in the second string. Jota will be back soon; other attacking subs not good enough (the defence was generally ok yesterday, despite being "patched up")

I wouldnt so much say weak, and not strong, its obvious the squad was and is, ill prepared for the task of retaining a title won in what was an extra ordinary, season of success .
To retain a title is to climb an everest of mountains, the preperation and planning is different, and Liverpool are failing through that lack of preparedness.
They are now where they are now with quations to answer.

The whole balance went out of whack.

Starting 11 last night, true, they had a lot of home grown talent on the field. Liverpools starting 11 last night cost less than 2 players on the bench for Utd's last game. easy to find stats to suit a narrative. Glad it took him until now to notice. I get that the injuries factor. But, it became apparent, after they finally lost a match last year, when everyone was fit, that they were bored.
While Liverpool lead the big 6 mini-league, so many matches against lower sides have served as trap games.
The obvious: TAA has hit the wall and is regressing- his positioning is even worse than his panicked crossing.
