We thought we were getting a good CB when we signed this guy, and - unpopular opinion - at times, that was what we got. He was solid in Arteta's first half a season in particular.

Even when he hit some very, VERY low lows, you couldn't say he wasn't putting in 100%. Best of luck to him.

He did have some good games especially in his first season before he got injured but was prone to lapses in concentration and his positioning and general defensive awareness was appalling at times.

I must have blinked and missed those good games. He only ever looked like a footballer when the defence was under no pressure. Any team that caused Arsenal problems he looked flat footed, lacking in any positional sense, a poor tackler, and almost afraid of heading the ball. As a friend of mine said, when he played Arsenal were down to ten men, sorry, the opposition had twelve..

There could be a player in there somewhere but his hot head leaves him out of position far too often.

Hopefully being back in Germany helps him out since he's got a good four more seasons in him at his 'prime'.

All the best, Musti, but it's good to see the much needed clear out happening at Arsenal.

It’s easy for people to criticise players like Mustafi but to be fair to him he did have some good moments in an Arsenal shirt but everyone is quick to forget those and remember his mistakes.

He did have a fairly promising start to his Arsenal career and he did score in a north London derby. Hopefully he can rekindle that form at Schalke.

Within the space of a week Arsenal lose Mustafi and Ozil who combined cost the club £80m for absolutely nothing (on top of the recent exits of Sanchez, Ramsey, Welbeck and Wilshire who ran down their contracts and no fee(s) were also received). The mis-management of the club by the likes of Gazidis and Sanllehi and the the board is truly staggering! And people blamed Wenger!!!

Agree that it reeks of poor management at the top, but it's well known Wenger had a fair amount of control of signings in his tenure and was keen himself to retain Ozil after the loss of Sanchez. He's not without blame for putting him on this monster contract.

But something is seriously wrong at the highest levels of the club.

its terrible isn't it that we got nothing for these players leaving because football is full of money at the moment isn't it? Look at who moved in the window across all of Europe...barely any money was spent with Barcelona close to a winding up order with Banks and clubs wanting monies owed.
So in the covid reality, culling >£1mill per week from our wage bill is a pretty sweet deal!

You can add Cazorla to the list too along with the likes of Pérez and Podolski who cost a lot and left for peanuts. AFC must have lost close to 150M in transfer fees over the past 5 seasons.

Er, because Wenger had complete control of transfer policy and wasted money on this filth. Btw, Arsenal got Mkhitaryan as part of the Sanchez deal so not only are you wrong but that deal further underlines his useless Wenger was late in his career as he was to blame for bringing yet another valueless player the club. Football is about making decisions on players. You can never get your choices right 100% of the time. As long as you get the right choices more than the wrong choices, you are ahead. It's better than not making choices at all, like some teams we know.

Get rid of some trash in Kabak and bring in some more trash in Mustafi.

Schalke must really want relegating. It's like swapping a clapped out Mondeo for an even older, more clapped out Mondeo.

I'm not sure if I'd have preferred Mustafi to be honest, he's an abysmal player but he does at least have PL experience - Kabak only has experience of being a terrible defender for a terrible non-PL team.

And Ballerin still doesnt know how to defend properly after all these years! You sold Ramsey to bring in plyrs like Ceballos and now Willian.
At least Liv got Kabak, voted league's 2020 best young defender, on loan not just splashing around.
Pepe looks nowhere near justifying £72m fee. At £45m, you'd expect a bit more from Partey. Jury still out on him.

Wenger failed to act in many transfer windows, leaving it to the last minute and panic buying. Mustafi was just that, a last minute overpriced player who was simply not good enough.

Mustafi actually played really well in many important games...but most fans didn't take to him...and did lose his head & concentration probably a few too many times. Some good business done by the club this window and they didn’t even need to open their checkbook.

Squad looks way more balanced and hungrier which is only a good thing. The wages will be healthier as well.

Loans out make sense as well I like Willock but he needs game time I also like AMN but he Unfortuantly do at quite cut the mustard if we are to be a top 4 team again.

Get rid of some trash in Kabak and bring in some more trash in Mustafi.

Schalke must really want relegating. It's like swapping a clapped out Mondeo for an even older, more clapped out Mondeo.

Not one of Arsenal's best signings but he always gave 100%. And if it didn't work out then you have to blame the club that payed £35m for him... what were they thinking? Mustafi joins a long list of poor investment from a club in decline.

Good luck to him as he will need it. Shalke are dreadful. As for Ozil, the Board sanctioned the money for a world class player. Supposedly Ronaldo was lvid when RM sold him as Ozil set up goal after goal for him. A German regular and player of the year 5 times. So not rubbish. Arsenal miss-used him and that is their fault. Such a shame. We have not seen the last of him.

I don't think Arsenal misused Ozil. He was a class act, but he had his personal flaws (as opposed to footballing flaws) and that was his un-doing. Wenger got the best from him by treating him with kid gloves. Whether that was right or wrong we will never know, it's all circumstance based.
In the end it was him mixing politics with the most commercial league in the world that saw his end.

I will never forget his embarrassing surrender in the Carabao Cup Final v Man City, after Aguero brushed up against him. As a defender you're meant to defend, not stand still waving your arms in the air letting your opponent run through unchallenged to score. Idiot.
Having said that, he was a decent bloke off the pitch - donating food to Islington during lockdown.

First season he was at Arsenal he was ok, made some errors, confidence went and when that goes it is hard to get it back, remember Fernando Torres went from world class to slow and indecisive, Mustafi did give 100% though, i felt sorry for him as it seemed to me that he tried too hard and things got worse and worse for him.

Doesnt matter what you write, or what you think, the overriding fact is ....£35 million ! Totally ridiculous, massively over payed, and is a classic example of how Wenger totally lost his way in the transfer market in his later years. Nice guy, tried hard, but we are in a much stronger position when it comes to centre halves now.

Take your point but Wenger did sigh Holding for £2 Million (good business) Sanchez was a bargain even at £30 million plus.
