Coronavirus: Vaccine supply fears grow amid EU export threat

The EU calls for "fair" distribution after vaccine companies cut back on pledged supplies.

Wake up to the real world.

AZ produced millions of doses before it knew for sure it could sell them, mhra etc.

Remember the EU that is now complaining, is the same EU that has yet to grant it permission to sell a single dose in its market place.

from another poster, the best summary yet...... the usual shower of ignorance. The EU has done a poor job of its roll out but it never stopped countries in Eu managing their own. If we had still been in the EU we would still have been able to roll out the vaccine as we have, we were doing this before we left the transitional period. this issue is not about EU competence its about AZ reneging.
Idiot. You obviously have no science understanding. Things can easily go wrong when 'growing' vaccines, nothing to do with reneging. And the EU were late to the party wrt ordering vaccines - another symptom of their bullying and bloated bureaucracy - seem to think they have priority. Removed

So the EU will be stopping exports to the UK of their Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (the one which takes longer to manufacture, has smaller production volumes and requires careful handling and has a limited shelf life) and will also be stopping imports of the easier to produce and larger production volume UK AstraZeneca vaccine

I think they are doing us a favour, quite frankly!
One has been shown to work.
The other one still has no reliable efficacy trial data.
I'd take that bet if I was the EU.

I strongly doubt they'll do it though. The main reason for the soundbites is not AZ, it is Pfizer. Pfizer has threatened to keep US production in the USA, and supply the rest of the world completely from the EU, severely cutting EU supply. It's a warning shot to that idea ...

If they are willing to accept that we have the most incompetent Government is living memory who have lost control of the virus for a second time, with the highest per capita death rate in the world, and no real plan other than to vaccinate ourselves out of our own incompetent mess

The current unrest in Holland provides a brilliant launch platform for the impending Dutch EUxit.

If we can get the Dutch youth sufficiently fired up over Covid, we can ride that rage-train all the way to the holy land.

With UK and Netherlands both gone the EU won't survive until the end of the year.

UK clearly better out than in, certainly in terms of current vaccine procurement and deployment: more dynamic, less bureaucratic.

Imagine the consequences if we're now unable to get vaccine for the second jab in time.

Should a company that cannot fulfil delivery of its orders not fairly distribute the vaccines that it can make?

Think very carefully Brexiters... [if indeed possible]

If the answer is no, then the 80% of the AZ vaccines that the UK is due to receive will be produced in EU countries and you will be happy for them to withhold those vaccines.

Reality bites. ??

Why are Brexiteers concerned about supplies of the Pfizer vaccine? Surely, if they are true to their word, none of them would choose to take something German/Belgian in origin, when they could wait a few weeks and have the British alternative.

Its painful to read these comments. It demonstrates that we as a country have learnt nothing over the last 4 years. We need all countries to have successful vaccine programmes, not just us. We need both sides to unify to get the job done. Something we could have achieved with ease had we still been in the EU. The price of sovereignty is now death.

The EU signed a deal in August for 300 million doses, with an option for 100 million more. The EU had hoped that, as soon as approval was given, delivery would start straight away, with some 80 million doses arriving in the 27 nations by March.

So why can't AZ meet the schedule for the EU and UK with all this notice.

I am just saying that, like all Remainers, you are lying/seriously misled about our sovereign status in the EU.

Watch the Dutch make a law on EU reserved matters that goes against Brussels and you will see how sovereign they are.
