Covid: Positive antibody tests doubled since autumn

Some 10% of the UK population is showing signs of recent infection, a doubling since October, says ONS.

Although detectable antibodies fade, the acquired immune system retains the ability to make more, and quickly, should you become re-infected. Fading antibodies does NOT mean you are automatically completely vulnerable again. Removed

Once the over 70’s have been vaccinated, we will have neutralised most of the virus’s potential to do serious harm to the vulnerable sections of the population.

It's thought that Spanish flu disproportionately affected the young because older people had had another flu variant which provided, if not immunity, then partial protection from a more serious illness, in the same way.

Neither does a fading antibody count mean that you retain any immunity from the virus, or that you will not become ill, or that you will be not able to pass on the virus. Nowhere in this article does it say that you are "automatically completely vulnerable again" so I don't see why you think you need to point that out, ignoring the very real possibility that re-exposure can lead to re-infection.

You are fake news.

The first jab gives you protection. The second is merely a booster to increase the protection even further.

Notice how in the single jab trials for the Oxford vaccine no one entered hospital or died after 21 days (the point at which you would get 2nd dose).
588
19/01/2021 12:19:26 10 7
bbc
Maybe, maybe not. We don't really know how much immunity is provided from the first shot relative to the second, since the studies only looked at the two. There are some estimates as to how much immunity is provided from a single dose from the data we have, but these are just estimates. It may be the case that one dose is sufficient, but we are giving two to be on the safe side.
603
19/01/2021 12:21:48 22 1
bbc
are you implying 'no immunity' from only the first injection?

I think you'll find there is a level of immunity, but the second 'jab' boosts it to give greater protection

whether the government is correct to allow a second injection beyond the (reported) approved time-frame, time will tell (and they've been found lacking over other issues!)

meanwhile, a preliminary 'jab' is better than none
632
19/01/2021 12:26:26 20 2
bbc
You don't know that so stop spreading lies. The pharma companies can only report on the controlled test performed and, this was based on 2 doses three weeks apart. However, there is a degree of immunity achieved after the first dose which will reduce hospitalisation and prevent serious illness. This will take the pressure off the NHS and provide relief for non Covid patients waiting for treatment.
635
19/01/2021 12:27:20 5 1
bbc
Inclusion of "political stunt" & "to gain any sort of imunity" is unhelpful.

Noted that the quoted 89% efficacy from one dose ignores the number of people in trials who became ill in days 1 -14, and therefor may be missleading; the figure published by Pfizer for a single dose is 52%, which is still significant.

Delayed second dose is, I presume, a calculated risk unltimately to NHS disruption.

Actually a large proportion (circa 60-70%, for the vaccine in question) get immunity (for whatever length of time) from the first shot. It's just that a second is needed to bring the immune proportion up to 90%+ (although the data re the 90% isn't that robust yet).

Even that 70% should be a big help to the NHS, and maybe fight the spread too, depending on how infectious immune people are.

NHS and UK gov can monitor covid+ cases in the vaccinated. If you notice covid+ cases sky rocket 2 months after first jab.. You can change policy. Simple.
And multiple other countries have followed ukgov lead.
Issue are
1) there is a worldwide shortage of vaccines
2) time taken to vaccinate people

The second jab actually halves vaccination progress.
19/01/2021 13:39:54 2 2
bbc
AZ has evidence that you can delay the second dose of their vaccine by up to three months. Pfizer do not have that evidence. A 12 week delay hasn’t been tested with the Pfizer vaccine. It should have been properly tested in a c,in iCal trial before this new policy was introduced.
19/01/2021 13:52:23 2 2

On the data it looks like 100% protection of ending up with a severe infection requiring hospitalisation after the 1st dose. Although you'd have to wait 21 days after the jab for the antibodies to be built up. I'd take a mild cold over having my vital organs destroyed !

Totally wrong - no further comment required.
Are people on here a bit thick? The body doesnt produce antibodies for an infection that isnt there. Once the infection has been fought off, the number of anti bodies needed fades. The body remembers, and when the virus is encountered again, it can produce the required antibodies. So of course, once you are fit and healthy the number of ABs drops, but that doesnt mean you arent protected. THICKOS. Removed

Indeed, and the likelihood of severe illness will reduce on repeat infection, in all likelihood. The well documented effects of exposure by flu and cold in the uncntacted indigenous peoples of the Amazon. It results in high death tolls on the first infection. Once the body has been infected once, the residual immunity reduces the symptoms upon re-infection with the same, or similar, virus.

There is opinion based on some evidence and a body of theory (Scientific) that immunity provided by surviving infection by SARS-COV-2 brings 5 months immunity from reinfection.

It is impossible to know more than this with a virus which did not exist one year ago. We have not a jot of a clue whether long term effects of infection will manifest other than 1 in 5 males suffering impotence.

Is Michael Gove a male model?
Is Bunter slimmer of the year?

My new year’s resolution is not to buy anything from Amazon for 2 reasons:
1. A lot of stock is complete garbage much of it from China who have scientists messing with things they do not understand.
2. They sell dodgy facemask exemption certificates like the ones they sold to the moronic Laurence Fox.

I read that as the opposite!

Seems like Trump wants to open the travel corridor on his last day and Biden will close that down again.

Yes and the Tories were warned to be prepared, but chose to ignore this. We even had time to prepare from late 2018 and when the crisis began to infect Italy, but Bunter chose to ignore that.
Stop bitching, covid is not political, bierced or racist sometimes people need to pull together! Stop with the political bullshit. Removed

Not a chance. The whole thing is hyperinflated fearmongering with unfit PCR tests to the government declaring in Nov that they will be including Flu cases into Covid cases. That's on the goverments own website. What you're seeing in hospitals happens every single year with flu, 2018 the media was reporting hospitals are at breaking point. The data is clearly being manipulated.

Yes indeed. The dinosaurs are a good example of what happens when a species gets too large and depletes nature. Maybe it is time for whales and dolphins to step up to the plate and take charge.
