Europe captain Padraig Harrington warns that some of Europe's older players may miss out on the delayed Ryder Cup but with qualifying resuming this week, Iain Carter predicts who will be in the 12.
Stenson would be a huge long shot along with Willet

Got to be a blend of new faces, and some old warriors, loving the thought of Hovland and Poulter playing together, what a frightening combo, total controlled power mixed with angry aggression. Think some of the US may do a little whoopsy if they came up against those two....
There are 4 Majors Players 3 World Golf Champs before Ryder Cup
Why on earth is Mr Carter writing about it now ?

Harrington did an interview about it on the radio so lots of material to use. There’s not much else at the moment to be fair
Same as carter but I
Wouldn't risk Victoria as think he would buckle under pressure in front of a crowd also he seems a loner....Casey takes his place ????????

Ha, I see what you done there!
whoever plays it wont be televised on the BBC
Which is a surprise when you consider how Pro-European they are, pretty sure Laura Keunssberg would be able to put a pro Europe spin on Paul Casey missing a putt on the 18th for a point in the singles....
No, it won’t. But it hasn’t been for 30 years. The ship has sailed on that complaint
Think it should revert back to the old days when it was uk and Ireland as we are now strong enough to compete against the USA. ????
You are joking? We wouldn't win a Sunday Stableford without Europe (And that's absolutely not a Pro-Brexit/Anti Brexit comment). Have you looked at the stats for UK and Ireland versus the US, when compared against Europe. It was Lambs to the slaughter, the facts are there to show it.
Old days? You’re going back over 40 years.
And, out of interest, why???

Just to spice things up, as a combined European team we know we are more than a match against the USA as our record speaks for itself, I think GB and I have a bigger and better pool to chose from than they had 40 years ago, also the rest of Europe could have their own team, maybe some sort of three team tournament, it's good to have a change.

The Europe team should also fly the Union Jack for the UK golfers. That's the reality of the situation now so only fair
Dear me - we’re still part of Europe as a continent and not the political EU.
Jesus. Christ. Here’s a gold star for at least trying to seem smart, bless

No. The UK is still a part of Europe, we’re just no longer a member of the EU.
No need to fly our flag separately.

Mclroy. Westwood. Rahm. Hatton. Fleetwood. Fitzpatrick. Poulter. Rose. Casey. Hovland. Garcia. Rose.
Eight months to go, but a European win is unlikely.
On current world rankings, the US will have much more strength in depth and without home-crowd advantage Europe will struggle.

On paper the European team are always second best if we look at the OWGR. However, they always seem to come good. I’m not sure if PH is the right leader though.
Rahm, McIlroy, Hatton, Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick, Hovland, Lowry, Westwood, Poulter, Rose, Casey, Wallace
Need the likes of Rose, Casey, Poulter and Garcia to find some form, otherwise one of them will miss out.

My team (if it was all picks): McIlroy, Rahm, Fleetwood, Hovland, Hatton, Poulter, Lowry, Rose, Westwood, Willett, Macintyre, Stenson.
Praying Molinari rediscovers himself but think Tommy will have a new partner this year.

The PGA was played in May last year - only 8 months ago...
Harrington in charge and calls for Lowry and MacIntyre?
We are going to get creamed.
Is Rory playing for us, or them, by then?

If they get in via automatic selection then there’s not a lot you can do about it. Apart from act like the xenophobic troll that you are.
The Ryder cup is getting a bit too tedious - esp all the months leading to it, with selection of this one and that one
Some golfers have lived off back this bi-annual nonsense for way too long.
But suppose money talks - and that’s what it’s all about.
Maybe make it 3 way tourney to jazz up a bit. America’s, Europe and ROW
Thoughts ?

Personally I think Ashes cricket and Ryder Cup are far and away the 2 most exciting and dramatic sporting occasions the world has to offer.
I am not interested in the build up to the Ryder Cup, or even who gets picked because I know we will be doing our best to win, and the only way of doing that is by having some great players.
The word "tedious" couldn't enter my mind, to be honest.

My thoughts are your an absolute pollock and clearly shouldn’t be allowed on any sports hys ever again!!! Surely even the bbc can’t delete this for calling someone a fish?? Can they? ??

My bad! Wallace/Macintyre/Sullivan/Lowry. Lowry blows way too hot and cold for me, could get pumped though and be more of a team guy than the others.
I still don't think Matt Wallace has the temperament. I thought he was getting there, but watched him a few times recently, and he's still beating himself to death over the odd bad shot. Needs to talk to Hatton's shrink....
Would like to see Lowry get into this team. Has played consistently well on the PGA tour and is not far away from winning.
Robert McIntyre has broken through this year. If he continues in this vein, he would be hard to ignore - even if only 21.
He will be 25 by the time the Ryder cup comes along - perfect age for a rookie
Who cares anymore
and while we’re at it ... who think Justin Thomas is a sniveling bed wetter for apologizing ... who cares

The Race to Dubai winner if European should be guaranteed to play, if required as a pick, its important the tour has its current champion in the team and shows the value of being the European Tour champion. If adds value to the tour championship in the year the cup is not played also.
By sheer virtue of the points gained they will be anyway.
Who cares, multi million pound sportspeople living the life of luxury while the rest of us suffer in our homes restricted from travel yet they can fly around the world making millions playing sport.
Which some of us enjoy watching as a bit of light relief in present times. Be better not bitter.
Oh dear!!! Lighten up Paul
Well done Paul, sparkling contribution there.....
Hovland should be a certainty - whoever is calling for Rose and Poulter are crackers. both finished at the top level.
Every Ryder cup we here how strong the USA are on PAPER ,what is the score last 20 years 7-3 ,and on paper who are better than Tiger ang MIckelson check this I believe they have the worst loosing record than most.. If in Europe easy win like in Paris (I was there, USA wanted no part of it Euro crowd destroyed them US are desperate for a leader ) but in U.S.A it will all depend on a bit of luck.
...and?
Poulter must go. The Americans hate playing against him. Psychologically he’s worth 2 points just being in the team.
You base your comment on his previous success but I think he is past his 'sell by date' and a team of 12 'in form' players would be a better choice.
If he's worth 2 points just being in the team why did he only get 1 point of of 3 in 2014?
If there is no crowd, will (or should) that affect the team selection? If you take the crowd out of the picture, does that reduce the potential effect or contribution of some players who might have normally expected to get in? - Honest question to people who know more than me about golf.
Interesting to see people taking the time to comment on this thread to say they didn't care or that the Ryder Cup is becoming tedious! ?? Great event, amazing levels of drama, excitement and entertainment! Young players are oven ready unlike Brexit deal and even the Americans are buying into the beauty of the team game! Bring it on! ????
Good he might be, but from what I have seen over the 12/18 months Hatton would be poison to the morale of the team and that is usually a USA problem!
What’s that based on?
Just because he wears his heart on his sleeve, this doesn’t make him a bad team player. He was one of the main men in France, both on and off the course

You clearly have zero idea about how highly regarded Hatton is amongst his peers, both sides of the pond.
I can tell you that he would be widely welcomed and appreciated on the Euro team and respected and admired by team USA

Fitzpatrick
Wiesberger
Hatton
Hovland
Casey
Westwood
Rose
Molinari
I changing of the guard to a degree with Stenson, Poulter and Garcia missing out, although if any of them find form they could replace Westwood

What is it with people claiming to no care or not be interested in a sport or event, but are still compelled to post a dismissive comment on it?
The Ryder Cup is a great event, massively popular on both side of the Atlantic, amongst players and fans.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out if there are no spectators present, although hopefully some will be able to attend by September.

Hear, hear......... can't wait, or make my mind up over selection.
If they can’t guarantee spectators I would delay it another year. It’d be like fish and chips without the chips.
Totally agree. Amazed at some of the comments BBC gets. 2020 was probably the biggest year ever of Golf participation (in the UK at least) with many clubs having to stop taking members and tee times being hard to get. Whoever thinks Golf is no longer popular, really has no idea...

Qualifying usually throw in at least one or two new guys some who you don fancy. That has an impact on the picks. The extra year might see SL miss miss out. FM formed a great pairing with TF could either of them miss out ? Lastly IP his record is great how many times has he qualified ?
Grow up Marg!!!
so you should be !!
We have so much talent on offer. Out of the 20 or so players mentioned, you can’t fail to pick a decent team. The likes of Rahm and Hovland are world class. We defo have to pick the team based on form and not the past. We can’t play an off-form Rose and Stenson over an in-form Fitzpatrick and Wallace
Ideally you want a mix of experienced players and a few rookies. The captain's picks will be biased towards experience, but also current form. I expect several new faces.
I would expect the following players to qualify automatically - McIlroy, Rahm, Fleetwood, Hatton, Fitzpatrick, Hovland and possibly Lowry, McIntyre, Rose, Wallace, Molinari, Garcia, Poulter, Perez, Weisberger and Poulter

It will...
Zzzzzzzz......
Harrington should be keeping his cards close to his chest rather than saying Poulter goes if he can walk. Anyone would think this guy won the last Ryder cup on his own. Medina was a long time ago. You can make as strong an arguement for Molinari based on tee to green and partnership with Fleetwood. Also Garcia is great for team and leading points scorer but Harrington and him don't get on

Most of this is far too close to call at the moment but Casey must be a great bet for the team and Willett probably should not be in the 2nd team!
Golf is fast becoming, while not obsolete, an irrelevance. The Ryder Cup was once a huge sporting event that captured even non golf fans. Not now. Hiding it behind a pay wall ghetto of course don't help it become popular again. You would be hard pushed to stop people in the high street who could name many golfers. In the past it would be Jacklin, Faldo, Seve, Nicklaus, Player, Palmer, etc, etc.
Dreadfully boring pastime (not a sport) played by even more boring people and those that watch it?
Brain dead surely.

With the level of Knowledge the BBC usually shows about golf Carter makes much of the relative world rankings.
He does appear to forget that OWGR is based almost exclusively on stroke play events and, guess what Mr. Carter, the Ryder Cup is match play.
Perhaps he, and a number of posters on this site, should stick to the simplistic game of football.

I'm not quite sure why you say "Carter makes much of the relative world rankings". He points out that Hovland has got to 14th, which is a fair point, otherwise he talks about world ranking points which are very relevant. If he had relied on world rankings he wold have included Wiesberger, Pérez and Casey in his team, and not Willett, who is 20th on the European OGWR list at the moment.

I'm not a fan of selecting "old guard" for past glories, unless they can prove they're on form .....& I'm a Stenton fan, but then sorry but no Poulton, Garcia or Henrik for me. Europe has too much up & coming talent to leave out due to misguided loyalties ........ Come on Europe, you can do this again ??
Sadly I don't know much about many of the names mentioned, partially because several are US based but mainly because I don't watch golf anymore.
I used to when it was on free to air, I even watched the pro celebrity show on C4 with Rafferty & Torrance, but now it is seen less than Nessie.
Watching sport on tv is what got me interested in many, where will the next generation gain their interest?
