How has record signing Tanguy Ndombele gone from looking set to be an expensive flop to star player at Tottenham?

Even Mourinho has his moments
An article that has been sitting at the BBC for 12 months waiting for him to score a goal.
Turning into a proper Spurs player, entertaining and heart. Hopefully Dele can be inspired by his progress I wish them both all the success because we desperately need creativity. We looked much better with three at the back and the full backs getting more involved in midfield. Up the Spurs! And great job Jose.

He’s had a couple of good games......
But at least he has had a couple of good games and actually tried unlike Dele
But at least he has had a couple of good games and actually tried unlike Dele
He’s played nearly every game this season and been superb in most
It is not one swalowe that bryngeth in somer. It is not one good qualitie that maketh a man good........Pendant alert. That's the translated quote from Latin,1539.
Anyone who said this was a ‘one off’ performance doesn’t watch spurs.. he is our most creative player this season but doesn’t really get any media attention.
Enjoy your few weeks at the top
Whilst Spurs have thrown away too many points with some very negative defensive displays far too early in games they have also been a joy to watch & remain firmly in the mix at the top of the table with a GD of 16.
Jose is his own worst enemy at times but he has made Spurs a much more resilient side whilst, at the same time, nurturing the clubs attacking flair in the shape of Son and Kane.

"Jose is his own worst enemy…"
A look at any HYS suggests otherwise.

Playing allot better but he’s hardly the return of modric, dembele or an in form eriksen. We played probably the worst ever in the premier league it’s hardly a benchmark
Took the lad a while to settle. Talent never in question. Has a big future in the game if he maintains the hard work and attitude.
Spurs have thrown away more points than anyone from winning positions. Arguably should be top of table. Robbed a couple of times and threw a few games away. Something is happening with Jose though...

What argument could you make? If they hadn’t dropped more points than those above them they would be top? Same argument goes for Sheffield United then?
Great man management from Jose. Great to see Tanguy was up to the challenge. Too many premadonas would have thrown their toys out of the pram.
Does anyone really believe his “stunning” goal against the blades was intentional? Just got a boot on it and tried to put back into danger area and happened to go in.
Does anyone believe that he just tried to put it back into the danger area and it happened to go in?
Your comment comes from someone who knows nothing about the game and has never kicked a ball in his life. Just another bitter rival fan. Doh.
Yes I know he meant it. It's physics, anything is possible within the science. People like you won't score goals like that because you don't believe it's possible. It all starts in the mind, attitude believe. Negatively never provides genius moments.
I believe he did mean it as I attempted an almost identical effort back in the day (it hit the far post though and a mate hammered in the rebound).

Ok he’s played well in spots but he’s only completed two matches, also he’s faded on second halves. He’s scored a few goals but we were bossed in midfield by palace and Fulham to name two. What do you need me to get a grip of? Jason dozzell was pants but scored goals

Definitely his best performance in a spurs shirt on Sunday, very underrated and the main reason Alli can’t get a game. Gio Lo Celso is another one who is awesome but doesn’t get loads of media hype because he doesn’t get loads of goals and assists.
Lo Celso plays too many easy balls...I.e sideways and backwards...plus has a nasty streak...hence the amount of yellow cards. But he was getting better before his injury.

The thing here is that assists, as in the last player to touch the ball, are counted but not the play leading up to the assist and it is this area that Ndombele is doing most of his work. If you watch the games you will see how many chances are created because of Ndombele even if it is someone else playing the final ball
He was unfit & overweight, he is now fitter & lighter and the team see's the benefit from this.
Also as mentioned by Jose and pretty much all managers it's about attitude & work ethic, you have to wonder just what Deli Alli is doing or not!

Despite some predictable pre-match comments regarding playing a 'back five' against Sheff Utd it was never going to be an over defensive setup. This system probably works best for Ndombele as it means we only need one true defensive midfielder - allowing him to float between defence and attack without the discipline needed in a back four setup. The big positive from the game though was Rodon.

His link up play yesterday was excellent and he showed just how strong he is on the ball.
We haven't always had much luck when signing players from France recently and it does take them time to adjust to the physicality of the Prem.
I still think Jose was wrong to publicly comment so negatively last season about Ndombele's form and fitness, keep things behind closed doors.

Exactly, yes he had a few niggles in his body last winter, but he still managed to train pretty much all second part of last season....only to be thrown into the wolves and bears with very little support (Burnley, Press, Jose). Then Jose preferred the Lo Celso's crab like easy sideways backwards play. And imho, Jose wasted opportunity to get top 4 with 3 draws 1 loss in last 8 games.
Its still turning out to be a very spursy season, just like any other.
4th and still in all 3 cup competitions. Why not post something you have actually thought about instead of repeating the same garbage at every opportunity?
Let’s wait until the end of the season, he has been slightly better this season but still needs to improve.
If you voted down, you obviously haven’t read the stats breakdown at the top of the page, 16 games played, 12 chances created and a 43.5% tackle success rate. Improvement required.

Fluke, nothing more
Incredible? Lol
The flop is Bale though, why sign a guy in 500k a week and not play him? He must an awful trainer as he is fit and is unused sub week after week in a terrible spurs team.

Bale is not a flop , just old and no longer up to Premier League standards same reason he was on the bench at Real Madrid . Plus Levy is not paying him 500k a week.
You think spurs are paying 500k a week?

If you think Spurs pay Bale £500K a week you are crazy
It's mainly down to the fitness level he now has.
It's actually not that. If you look at how he plays, he has his center of gravity low, most hockey players who do that can't play for to long either, it's not his fitness it's his weird running style.

I meant the last 8 games of last season. Had we won 7 and drawn 1 ....we would have qualified for the this seasons champions league. But we drew 2 or 3 and lost 1....and I put that down to Jose's failure with Ndom ele and leaving Toby Alderwerield out of some of those 8 important games. How it's Dier, Sanchez before Toby...is a massive mistake.

Spurs pay him £10.5m a year.
Spurs beat Sheffield Utd.
Good ole BBC.

Yes it is he has worked really hard & had a special programme to get him in prime condition. He is now able to complete 90 mins unlike before you can also see the difference.
Dele Alli was J.M. First pet project on arrival at Tottenham, you’re given a small window to buy into the project and have to give it everything .... Dele wouldn’t or couldn’t do that and he’s on field attempted back heels and flicks were the last straw, but Ndombele is a whole different story and is now benefiting from the hard work he’s done and the one on one coaching has seen him flourish.
One of the best midfielders in the world and he is realising that potential??!! Hahaha oh man if he's one of the best there is then football standards have seriously dropped
Its still turning out to be a very spursy season, just like any other.
Hojbjerg has been a revelation, a shrewd purchase and Rodon has shown that he has the potential to be a top quality centre half.
The Bale situation is frankly baffling considering Levy's well known "value for money" mantra.
Happy to be in the mix , I don't believe we will win the league but a cup and a top 4 finish would be a very good season.

Still not convinced on Hojbjerg. If he could add a goal 2 or 3.....maybe. JWP...scores goals and assists. That said...big mistake vs Fulham was by Jose playing all 3 cdm's...Hojbjerg, Sissoko and Winks. Poch' tried at the beginning Sissoko more forward but soon realised his best position was Cdm as replacement for Dembele. I doubt Jose will ever again play those 3 again from the start.

In other news, despite Wilshere's previous bleatings about him being at his peak at 28, when sacked by WHam, Still can't get a PL game anywhere! He has found a championship club to steal a wage from, Bournemouth!

Jose has transformed Spurs. Got rid of ineffective Rose, Jan& Erikson and reduced the influence of Winks sideways & Alli's tricks/flicks. Next he bought Højbjerg as a middle the park general, moving back Dier to centrsal defender &shifting Kane back darting the ball behind fast striker Son. Challenging Ndembele to become fit, his team is less Spursy & slowly becoming a winning machine.
Don't agree that he has transformed THFC. Our true position at the moment is 6th in the Premiership. That's not that great given the support he has had...and don't forget he is being paid £14 million per year.
You’ll win the cup this year. Very Jose
Not sure I agree that Jose has transformed Spurs. There is still some way to go for that statement to be true. We need to be better tactically and go for the jugular against weaker teams as we still look vulnerable at the back depending on who plays. That said, we are improving and it is so close at the top a couple more wins on the bounce and we could be top 2.

'Transformed' is too strong a word - but he has improved the team and the mental approach. At the time he took over 6th was a long way away.....

Dunno about that, Hojiberg never came to us as an all round midfielder, so I don't expect him to be one. He is an outstanding ball winner, shields and retains it. He's got a good pass in him, far better than sissoko, he would never dream of playing the pass to Reguilon for Kane header v Fulham. You need 2 types of dm, 1 to help defence and one to help attack, box2box (Ndombele), we have that now.

I've noticed that, he's no James Rodriguez spraying those kind of passes. Has opportunities to, but seems hesitant far too many times and goes simple instead as you say. I don't think he's very accurate with his slide rule passes, and general delivery, very few make it.
Tanguy Ndombele looked a really good player before the Jose took a dislike to him and stopped playing him.
Had to bite the bullet and started playing him again.
Everyone new he was a good player except Jose
Spurs should not be struggling to finish of teams and this must be due to the manager

Maybe you should learn how to write before you start spouting your non..sense. Like all good player, he had to be shaped and refined through fire to be able to fit into what his new manager and team needed, but why be logical when you can blame Jose for everything.
If Jose did take a dislike it would only have been because it was clear, well at least to anybody with half a footballing brain, that N'Dombele just wasn't prepared to put in what was required on the pitch. As good a transfer window as we had getting him back onside would always prove to be the most significant upgrade to the team as he is the one player that can come close to replacing Dembele.
Let’s wait until the end of the season, he has been slightly better this season but still needs to improve.
There is 2 main reasons why Jose and Bale are a mystery. 1/ Bale hasn't shown an attacking drive that he once possessed, so Jose has preferred Lucas, Bergwijn and Sissoko (vs Fulham). Perhaps Bale could be tried on the LHS but Jose prefers Davies and Reguilon. 2/ Bales injury niggles...I suspect Jose felt Bales niggle at Stoke before xmas was a cop out from wanting to travel over the xmas period.

It's interesting seeing some of the opinions on this article, but let's not forget it's the BBC writing about a Premiership manager. This week, JM is a wily genius revealing his master man-management plan. Next week, he'll be the taciturn old manager that has become bitter, watching football pass him by.
On recent form, I'd expect a "fat Frank" article and maybe a "negative Klopp" piece.

Chelsea on awful run of form, lucky to sneak by 10 man Fulham. Haven’t beaten a top 6 side in ages. Averaging less PL points than any other manager. Has arguably the best side in the league. Many expect much much better.
Liverpool have been on a very bad run of form , 3 games without a goal! Compared to last season when they won pl by like 20 points this is poor.
Or do you want VAR articles?

Christ all this for a fluke. Was simply trying to get it in the danger area and luckily it went in.

WOW a £50 million + player eventually starts to play well and we're supposed to be bowled over? How about he regularly performs season in season out and then we can talk?

If you're within 6 points of the top, right now, you're still a contender. That's SIX sides, plus Villa (3 games in hand could see them as high as 35 points), and there's 3 more sides tied at 8 points behind.
Once Arsenal v. Newcastle is done, today, Arsenal will be only the 5th team to have completed 19 matches, meaning EVERY side still has at least half their fixture list to complete.

In reality he’s been with the club for a season and a half. He’s not bossed a game some sparkle and promise but look at the stats, he’s not a player that grabs hold of a game like the above mentioned ones, sissoko has more time on the ball than he does . If you can’t see that hey that’s your problem

The BBC seems to have a fascination with attacking whichever managers have had the most recent poor results. As my post alluded to, and you've just piled-on, as if you're saying something I didn't, Lampard and Klopp are managing the sides with poor runs of form (Nuno at Wolves, too, but the BBC doesn't seem to pay much attention to managers outside the "Big 6").

Patience is not something many humans are blessed with in modern life. The Covid crisis has highlighted this even further. Have a little patience for a season or two and players can come good. Werner and Havertz we will probably be talking of in the same breath this time next year. Alex Ferguson would never have achieved as much if he was appointed now. No one would wait 4 years for a trophy

One goal does not an excellent player make... He'll be back in Jose's doghouse with the rest of Spurs, that's what Levy signed on for??????

He will turn out to be inconsistent and not worth the price tag. Happy to be proven wrong, let's see how consistent he is by the end of the season.

As my post alluded to, and you've just piled-on, as if you're saying something I didn't, Lampard and Klopp are managing the sides with poor runs of form (Nuno at Wolves, too, but the BBC doesn't seem to pay much attention to managers outside the "Big 6").

Last Easter, in the middle of the first lockdown, Mourinho turned up unexpectedly at Ndombele's home and said "we are going for a run"
They trained in the public park nearby in their Tottenham training kit and were seen by loads of people
I think that is when Mourinho put the hard word on Ndombele that he needed
Sometimes, adversity teaches us to defy it and concentrate on a better future ahead

Where's the improvement? Passing accuracy, tackle success, passes, dribbles are all down! This guy is good, he's on a roll but hardly world class or one of the best midfielders in the world.

He did well, but it's consistency now, he needs to do this against Liverpool and Chelsea etc. He can boss games when in form, and it's in the big games he has to turn up before the price tag is justified. Not quite yet. Not to take away anything from the performance, one of his best yet. Let's hope he can put a run of games together on form.
Lo Celso plays too many easy balls...I.e sideways and backwards...plus has a nasty streak...hence the amount of yellow cards. But he was getting better before his injury.
WOW a £50 million + player eventually starts to play well and we're supposed to be bowled over? How about he regularly performs season in season out and then we can talk?
In reality he’s been with the club for a season and a half. He’s not bossed a game some sparkle and promise but look at the stats, he’s not a player that grabs hold of a game like the above mentioned ones, sissoko has more time on the ball than he does . If you can’t see that hey that’s your problem
