Why has this been pushed back?

These sensible measures should have been in place months ago.

Who is responsible for these failings?

If this new variant does not respond to the vaccines, it will be like having a brand new virus.

We should be treating this seriously.

Unfortunately our government does not make decisions. They wait until there are no options to decide on.

Enforce quarantine. Copy the New Zealand method.

It will be unforgiveable if this variant gets into the UK and we find out it is resistant to the vaccine.

And still our borders are not secure. Everyone told to stay at home but anyone can come into the country from abroad.
Noticed another article about holiday bookings being up because of vaccination hopes. More like another wave of infections/death just because some can’t be sensible. May be allowed to travel but doesn’t mean you should !!

New test rule for England arrivals pushed back to Monday...more excuses that are absolute drivel. People have had plenty of time to prepare and this policy should have been in place last March. Every day of delay costs more lives. Just compare the UK to Germany. UK 4m covid cases in a population of 66million. Germany 2m Cases in a population of 84 million..

"Mr. Johnson said the UK was taking steps to make sure it (The Brazilian Virus) was not brought into the country". We now know the steps are backwards leading to discussion by committee about the POSSIBILITY of taking action. This is NOT leadership Boris, it is Muddle & Dither which this conservative voter will remember at the next GE.

The silly thing is that anyone who is resident in the UK, and has chosen to be abroad at this moment, should have already made plans for:

1. Getting ill
2. Getting stuck in the "foreign" country
3. Getting a Covid test

So rule changes should not be delayed at all.

A, This whole initiative is 10 months too late already.

B, "Pushed back to give people time to prepare"? Well govt didn't give us ordinary people time to prepare when they changed our tiers or put us back into lockdown did they?

C, One rule for us, another for the elites - international business travellers, media, sports people, politicians, very wealthy etc.

All in this together? Hogwash.

All sensible people have already "prepared". I'm abroad at the moment, and if the rules are changed, or my flight is cancelled, it is no big deal. If you can't do this, don't go abroad. It's simple.

I agree - whenever you go abroad it's always wise to be prepared for various eventualities - but there's also a very good argument for people not going abroad at all at this time. I also believe that providing a negative test should have been brought in quite some time ago.

Having travelled to South Africa on business in November, the rules were simple. Visitor, resident or citizen, if you don't produce a negative Covid test on entry you isolate at an institute(normally a hotel) of the governments choosing at your own expense for 2 weeks or until you have a test done there. I isolated here and didn't get a call nor was my passenger locator form checked! Pathetic here

Nice to see the UK government being so considerate to those countries that have 'problems in testing capacity & availability' so are therefore exempt & we allow travellers in without testing. You'd be forgiven for thinking this Government would place the our security above the challenge of a testing regime in another country as a condition of travel to the UK. But no, we come last as usual.

In reality, how many of our 40-50,000 new cases a day are from travellers?
The worst of the new mutations is the one that started in UK.
Certainly introduce sensible health checks on arrivals
but, really, more people are catching Covid queuing for vaccines now.

Viruses mutate.
Influenza mutates so that a new vaccine is needed every year (but is still only 40-60% effective).
But those vaccines give immunity for almost a year.
Covid vaccines give immunity for only 4-5 months.
We can't hide forever. Covid is now endemic.
We will be a sicker nation. Make sure the NHS is ready for that.

Very difficult for UK to trade internationally with travel bans or lengthy isolation in force. Plus there are a lot of genuine crises that require travel.
Testing before departure is much better than testing on arrival - why contaminate other passengers?
US has now found 2 new home-grown mutations. They will keep coming.
Less hysteria and more workable precautions needed.
