Well, they used it in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test
Steve Smith caught on stump camera erasing to Rishabh Pant’s batting guard marks from the crease. Once a bad sport, always a bad sport.
But brilliant grit from India to bat out 131 overs in the 4th innings. Not many teams, especially depleted ones, do that nowadays - especially in Australia.

Just like Mike Atherton, or does that sand in pocket not count?

somebody said Indian cricket is spoiled by IPL and they cant play test cricket abroad.
Best way to Answer critics is by performing on Cricket field. India is doing just that, they are matching the Australians punch by punch and that too after so many injuries. Well played India!

What did you expect when you sent all your convicts down to a country you colonised and forcibly removed the indigenous population? We are effectively British at the end of the day? look in the mirror
Re Steve Smith. Is it any wonder when Justin Langer is their coach.

Did anyone else hear the commentators just before the start of play? They were gleefully bantering about whether India would make it to lunch or not? I wish I could have listened throughout the night to hear the smug tones slowly be replaced by a pretence of humility and appreciation for the Indian team ??
The Gentleman's game played by Aussie scums and cheaters. Paine was suppose to change the moral and ethics of Australian cricket but he is rather opposite. The fans are learning from captain and Steve Smith and now racially abusing Indian players. The umpires seem to me cheaters and racist as well. India should end the tour after dismal behaviour from Aussie cricket team and fans.

Once an Australian always a cheat. Smith will never change but the stupidity of his actions is that with cameras and microphones all around grounds it makes you wonder why he doesn't stop. Maybe a red/yellow card system should be introduced for cheating. Playing one player short would be interesting.

I’ve got a new term for cheating or crossing the line in sports- its called doing a Steve!

Shame on the BBC for allowing unsubstantiated allegations & smears against Australians in this test, e.g, "cheating," "racists," "scum." Yet they removed my honest opinion that Pant cheated when claiming a catch with his gloves pointing downwards at the ball on the turf. And no reporting of Indian gamesmanship subbing Pant for a better keeper when he was fit enough to bat & top score at no.5.
Calm down Lillian. It's not your fault. It's the Aus system. You're represented by vile people. Half the antics haven't been reported here. Wade throwing ball at the batsmen. Trying to charge the batsmen twice. Robinson giving out Indian batsmen lbw when the ball is missing by 6 inches. Just be happy that India didn't win the toss. All the videos are on YouTube now.

For those sad haters still going on (and on and on) about it, Smith often shadow bats during drinks breaks - it is one of his idiosyncrasies. Amazed that the BBC should devote time to this nonsense whilst ignoring India totally gaming the new rules by subbing in a better wicket keeper for the "injured" Pant who is then promoted up the batting order less than 24 hours later and top scores with 97.

After the Sandpapergate in South Africa I thought they chose Paine as captain because he was a ‘nice bloke’ and he said that Australian cricket would be a good example of sportsmanship. So he led the sledging and allowed a petulant Smith to rub out Pant’s crease markings!
Now remind me, why do we not like Australian cricketers? It is a pity this series had to be played without neutral officials.

Looking over the usual anti Australian comments on this site, I can only guess at the reaction if Smith had tried to claim that catch Pant claimed off Pucovski, or had asked for a substitute fielder for Warner’s groin injury whilst still letting him open the batting. Things are rarely black and white, folks! And anyone who thinks only Aussies sledge has obviously never played with Jimmy Anderson!
Great result for India, showed a load of guts.
But of course Australia up to their old tricks. Abusive sledging from Paine and Smith scuffing up the wicket and guard.
New Year, old Australia. Somethings just don't change.

Smith did not “scuff up the wicket.” The laws of cricket define very clearly the protected part of the wicket, and Smith’s idiosyncratic shadow batting did not occur on that. He broke no rules. Just another beat up from English fans who won’t let it lie where Smith is concerned. If Kohli had done it, nobody would have batted an eyelid. India’s gaming of the subs rule a far bigger talking point.
It is sad that Australia have not learnt anything after the Sandpaper Gate incident-it does not alter the fact that Steve Smith is an inherent CHEAT and will remain so. Doing everything to disturb the concentration of the batsman when he is going great guns is built in the Aussie DNA. I dare CA to make an example and drop him from the next Test if not for the nest six months.

What a spectacle the Australians put on for us to witness - a great advert for their country and sport. The Indian team get racially abused by the fans. The team continually bad mouth the opposition. The former captain continues to cheat. And to top it off the current captain cannot catch for toffee and fails to control his team in the way they conduct themselves. GREAT WORK AUSTRALIA!!

Doing a Steve in cricket is like doing a Karen in real life!

TOTALLY DISGRACEFUL by Smith and Paine denying BLATANT CHEATING. They need to grow up. The game of cricket is all the worse for having lily livered, dishonest liars peddling their trade at the top level. Cricket Australia won't do anything - and so the world needs to take a stand for the sake of the decency and integrity of the game. Failure will leave young cricket fans thinking it's ok to cheat.

You cannot behave like Yobs on a Cricket pitch, swearing, leering and intimidating opposition players. It's a game of cricket, let your skills do the talking like India do, not behave like playground bullies. Lack of education, morals and a poor upbringing is the consequence of Aussie behaviour.

Shocking from steve smith again, he gets away with it again and again because the authorities are too weak to do something...the sandpaper incident, if he had not have been caught..there would have been no crying on tv...shocking shocking behaviour from the australians.
Smith has not learnt a broody thing since sandpapergate, he is at it again, it was a drinks break, he should be nowhere near the batting crease,if he was there to work out a line for a bowler to bowl to a lefthander it's not his job, leave it to the captain or bowler. CHEATER. should be properly investigated and then banned for life.

Disgusting behaviour by the Aussies. Their on-field histrionics and intimidation transfers itself to the crowd, some of whom resort to racist behaviour. The onfield antics of Haslewood, Starc, Paine, Wade, Smith, are abhorrent. They behave like shipwrecked pirates on the beautiful land of the Aborigines, wait a minute...... ICC needs to warn Australia to clean up their act.

England are actually ICC rated no.4 in test cricket - not 1st as you claim.
If there was an ICC rating for "ignorance of fans" you'd do a lot better in that one - if the comments on this site are anything to go on. :)

See my post below and give you an idea why he is doing this besides how can we say be doing other things against the conduct of a sportsman during play.
Yes it's is up to Captain or bowler as you say but input from your Top batsman is helpful too.
It's the way it's happened I guess.
Many loopholes in the laws need to be tightened up as we say.

Just read about Steve Smith "marking middle wicket as a guard" during a drinks break while he was FIELDING ... i think that smacks of being caught out AGAIN for attempting to cheat ...no fielder should be doing anything around the opposition's crease guard marks without an Umpire overseeing it. Something clearly not right with Smith's mentality, win at all costs is not cricket

I think its insulting and usually from individuals who have not really travelled to fully appreciate the life here for all peoples, Just look at their Aussie 20-20 its so homogenised you'd think no other culture ever lived there; That's why they have these quirky rules changes because its boring. No, UK far from perfect but head and shoulders above 98% of the world
Last comment removed, was it the word 'cheat' or the comparison to small rodents that did it....bbc grow up....you must me using Rob 'splinter bum' Key to moderate ....time to grow some

And Steve Smith has been cheating again, this time scuffing up the batting crease when he should be no where near it.
