Perez wins Sakhir GP as Mercedes pit error costs Russell

Racing Point's Sergio Perez takes his first F1 victory in the Sakhir GP as Mercedes fumble what should have been a debut win for George Russell.

Let's be clear. GR's performance shows it is NOT all about the car. If it was Bottas would clearly have dominated him. Like LH he has proved himself in lower formula. Anyone who seeks to diminish this drive has an illegitimate agenda. Lots of noise about MV and CL but this guy could be the next force.

Your comment makes no sense, The race until Mercs........up in their pitstops were miles ahead. It is all about the car, how else would an average driver like Bothas be second in championship

Anyone who knows anything knows it isn’t just the car. This year, the merc has been the best of course but previous years it’s been a lot closer (Ferraris rocket engine last year springs to mind)

How do you figure that? We know it is the car and Botta is a less able driver, Wolff called him a wingman years ago and it is the unfortunate truth for VB. Why Mercedes are scared to put another top driver like Perez in the car is the question. Maybe it is contractual on LH's part or just to avoid in team rivallry.

Many so called F1 fans obviously do not follow motor sport in the lower formulae otherwise they would realise that George Russell is a champ in his own right. When crowned F2 Champ a couple of years ago he comfortably out-performed Norris and Albon. Had he been given a decent car for the last couple of years as happened this weekend people would have a whole different appreciation of the lad.

Agreed and you must remember they all raced each other in the lower formulas coming up. I have seen a Sky F1 piece with CL. When asked who he rated of all the drivers he raced with in lower formulas he actualy said Albon first then he mentioned max...interesting huh? Ocon is in that set too however I think what happened on Sunday between CL & MV is going to be the next generation of f1 rivalry

Another one who believes in the same car myth.

Clearly both Mercs have time in hand over the rest of the field. Clearly also we now have proof positive that not only is the Merc the car to have, but, ideally the #1 car as it obviously has time in hand over the #2 Merc.

Same scenario in the Ferrari team with the LEC>

Bottas is stealing a living, and now even the Mercedes true-believers can see it. Russell slaughtered him in a car he barely even fits into, took 2 more pit stops and still only finished one place off him, not to mention he overtook Bottas twice!

Bottas hasn't justified his place in the sport for years, and it's now crystal clear he doesn't belong in the 2nd Mercedes.

I think Merc shafter Bottas big time today. They pitted GR first, and left VB on the slower tyres for a few laps before calling him into the pits. Then gave him worn tyres to finish the race on. The second GR pass on VB was due to tyres and not driver ability. The first pass on VB was due to a great start from GR. It was a bad performance from Mercedes and not the drivers IMO

I do wonder if Mercedes want to take the risk with Russell next year. He was brilliant today and showed Bottas up for the lame duck he is. Russell knows he should be in that 2nd seat, will Mercedes want to risk losing Russell by keeping Bottas on?

He holds the outright records for:
Most wins (95)
Pole positions (98)
Podium finishes (164)
Points finishes (228)
Career points (3763)
Points in a season (413)
And you do not get to be a 7 time world champion in two different teams and be in any way 'lucky'. Rosberg and Bottas have found that out the hard way.

George Russell gets three points - the first of his career - two for coming ninth and one for the fastest lap. But he should’ve had so so many more.

A horror pit stop, where he ended up with the wrong tyres on the car and then instantly had to pit again the next lap to get rid of them, followed by a late puncture and that ruined what could’ve and should’ve been the first win of his career.

No it doesn’t at all. Lewis has proved time and time again that he has the skill and outright talent to dominate. George is a great driver, that is why he is part of the Mercedes programme. That said, he isn’t seasoned enough to turn up and put that car on pole, week in week out and make it win. Nearly winning one race isn’t comparable to 7 championships.

Just like the team you support your comment is totally irrelevant and silly. Bottas has the same car but guess what Hamilton performs week in week out. It's all because Hamilton is a white guy like Button but a mixed kid from a working class family who has done it and shown that having money doesn't mean you have talent.

Mercedes's mistakes cost Bottas his race, but not that of Russel. He was back into P2 with 12 laps to go, shod with new rubber, and would have easily passed Checo to regain P1 before the flag.
It was the puncture that cost Russel the win, and, as far as we know, that was nothing to do with his team.

Russell is not their driver, Hamilton is.
