A full strength England scrape a win at home against the French barbarians, and they couldn't have done it without the ref helping them at the end.

Anyone that follows international rugby will know that the French squad is strong and they had nothing to lose today, they’ve also been favourites for the upcoming WC for a while, hardly a B team. Unlike the Wales camp who have a weak squad, this French team have great strength in depth which clearly showed today.

As an England fan I am quite worried and excited at the same time. Worried because don't seem as good as i thought they were. Excited because if the French keep playing like this and keep their discipline and England improve further we will now have two Northern Hemisphere teams capable of winning the Work Cup and beating the top SH teams. I envy the French coaches who are spoilt for choice now.

Itoje is too good and too crucial to be captain, the team needs him to keep concentrating on what he is doing. England do need a new captain though, not much evidence of leadership or on-field decision making today yet again.

Great post! Thanks. Yes! France were majestic and played with flair, good to watch. Given that France players could only plant in 3 games, it means that France have used over 50 players in the tournament and could have won! Classy comment.
Clearly from a country that’s never won a WC and thinks the 6N is important.
Newsflash:
NZ, Australia(often), SA and England are the teams to beat.
Finishing 4th, 5th or 6th in this autumn comp is an indication of ineptness.

I think also we can ‘blame’ SA for the state of rugby now, EJ realised after the NZ and SA games in the World Cup, that SA won with brutal style and it seems that that is the default way to win now - exciting rugby comes second.

As a Welshman, I acknowledge England have players in abundance & should be the best International team in the World. One thing stopping them IMO, Eddie Jones. Luck evens itself out, but today they had their fair share. No TMO for important decisions? Wales are a long way off competing. Wooden spoon between Wales & Italy next 6N. The laws do NOT allow him to check for a 'simple' knock-on in such circumstances, ie. when a try has not been scored and he has already decided to stop live play and go back to where he believes the error occured. It should have been a scrum to England on half way line as the french fly half kicked off around 3 yards into England’s half. This is a clear breach of law 12.2. So, I agree the referee made a poor decision in that phase of play but probably not in the way you’d like...

Think it was knocked on.

But to be fair, there shouldn't have even been extra time. Vinupola knocked it on at the ruck about 78min before a penalty at the next ruck, which we know they kicked to the corner and scored a try from. Don't know why the linesman didn't call it...was pretty obvious!

2 bits of silverware in a bad year for rugby and sport isn't bad for the psyche. The England team looked pretty happy during the trophy ceremony. Perhaps its more a case of the England team taking positives from a tough game but proving that ultimately, they are still tough to beat, even when Farrell has a bad day at the office. England have got big problems no doubt about that. They are so one dimensional and to think they used to criticise Wales for being boring under Gatland. Needing the ref to beat France reserves is not a good sign and Jones has got some big decisions to make. France to win grand slam next year I reckon

Well played France. I wasn't expecting that, especially the first half performance. That passage to stop England scoring a try at the half time whistle was immense.

Second half it was all England really but so many mistakes and I did feel sorry for the French a little.

Farrell should have handed over kicking duty though. Terrible today.

Despite the comments on here, Farrell is a superb player, but he should not be captain.

He was having a shocker with the boot, but his every instinct is to take the responsibility, so there was no way he was going to pass on the kicking tee.

Needed a different captain to make the call for him. England also need more leaders elsewhere on the pitch.

If you know anything about rugby psychology, this is by no means a hollow victory. This game could be a big turning point for England.

This was a brilliant exercise in a high stakes match were England were put under massive pressure in a very adverse game by a determined and physical French side who often dominated them. To come through that challenge, and win at the death, is massive.

Right, let’s get it out there from the start, before trolls take over. If a good senior side play double U20 World Champions, only idiots and WUMs would predict a mismatch.
