Brexit stalemate: Boris Johnson and Ursula Von Der Leyen seek to break trade deal deadlock

EU and UK negotiators call in leaders in last ditch effort to secure a trade deal.

A comment which shows why the UK has never understood how the EU works. It's not only France, it's 4 costal countries who are opposed to the present fishing quotas (France, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands). They have fished the UK waters for centuries. Every one of those countries has the right to veto the "deal". Now cheap pseudo-psychology is not going to resolve this matter.

That's correct, but their waters are not as productive, which is why they want to rape out fishing grounds and our guys get their quotas crushed. this act will not stop reciprocal agreement, but unlike before, we can now control by licence who fishes in our waters and how much they can take. it'll be likewise if we want to fish theirs, this will enable our fishing industry to once again flourish Removed

They won't, though. They lose tariff-free access to their main market, and lose fishing rights in EU waters. The UK fishing fleet catches only 300 kt per year from our own waters, but 350 kt per year in EU waters. UK fishing actually loses MORE than the EU.

Fr farmers won't torch Paris - our market is too small. In practice - northern French fleet denied access to fishing that they paid for (buying British quota from British fishermen who sold it to them). They will then blockade the Channel ports in protest, to target the UK. Border checks won't be the issue.
The idea that migrants will stop trying to access the UK after a no deal is laughable.

Were the island, were the one`s vulnerable to port blockades by the fishermen. The French will just let the migrant's cross (why stop them) once they set foot here they can claim asylum.

And what of the c.15% of UK catch that comes from EU waters? You do realise we are asking France to police our borders for us, right? You give them the two-fingered salute & what do you think will happen? No LPF.... I very much doubt you have the slightest understanding of EU stance on LPF. What I've read in Brexity media is jingoistic twaddle. ND & you can watch UK farmers torch Westminster.

All the Brexiteers on here must also be for Scottish Independence.

As you all keep posting, how can one country dictate to another? So with this in mind how is Scottish Independence any deferent from what you want. Isn't not being controlled by London the same as not being controlled by Brussels

You keep saying that it's all about sovereignty, so what about Scotland's sovereignty?

At present we don't know and understand the rules and the rules might change at any minute. Many businesses say they are not prepared because the negotiations are not over. Then there is the issue of Covid-19, NI where up to 60% of GB to NI imports might be effected. How can a business setup a compliance system if they don't know what they have to comply with & know it might change?
Like it or not, Brexit is just a form of racism, and a dislike for others just because they are foreign. Brexiteers are inheritantly racist, but they hide behind their uneducated and unfounded beliefs about democracy and the benefits for the economy.
South Africa suffered economically for being a racist state, so why shouldn't the UK . You reap what you sow ?

They were pretty ruthless with the Greeks - but I did note
1. Many residents - in what always used to be a poor country - acquired expesive 4WDs
2. Part of the price they paid was selling off their state owned airports..... ours have been in private hands for decades.

So I think much of the blame did lie with Greeks, but the optics were bad for the EU

I am not adverse to in the first year giving 90% of the quotas and reducing it yearly till the end of licences or when we have decided on how to protect OUR fish stocks. But really demanding 10 years shows us how the EU side have conducted themselves along. The level playing field is total garbage, if company A wants to sell in market B it has to meet the legal requirements. End of problem.

Good-will does not mean compromising on the fundamental basis of the the EU - the level playing field - which the UK helped to create. Whereas the UK position is entirely political - a policy designed to appeal to the minority of people on this island who form the base of the political party our antiquated voting system put in power. Both May and Johnson could've avoided this if they had any guts.

As a foreign national (although Irish citizens are included) M. Barnier cannot receive a knighthood as they cannot swear allegiance to the crown

The amount of time and money spent on negotiations is truly appalling and unnecessary.

Immigration is a positive, not a negative. If you voted Leave because you wanted less immigration, shame on you. We should remain in the single market and the customs union. That resolves the Ireland border issue. Then concentration could have been on fishing, etc.

In general, Remainers contribute far more to GDP than Brexiteers, but if Remainers are made to suffer under a No Deal, there will be far less available to pay out in terms of benefits, NHS, social care etc used by Brexiteers. With Covid too, the country will be truly bankrupt, mass unemployment, years of hardship. All those extra fish n chips will be costing £££'s and created misery for millions.

Macron should told that despite his veto a deal is going ahead anyway. After all, that's what David Cameron was supposed to swallow 5 years ago when the EU acted arbitrarily to prop-up their rotten currency. It meant Britain would have to pay to bailout profligate countries and our veto would be disregarded. It's the real reason for the Tory revolt that led to the referendum - and quite rightly.

It’s great to return from the COVID panic back to Brexit. ??

It’s far more hilarious with Remainer’s frothing about No Deal the obvious choice) than C-19.

It’s been good to string them along for 4+ years with talk of BRINO’s and possible deals, but that stops in 26 days.

Pity the Remainer’s with nothing to worry and moan about - Save yourselves, there’s still time to run to the (EU) hills? ????

"I like stern German women"

I think Ursula has a kind face

Seen her when she was younger?

As sure as day follows night, eventually there will be an overwhelming vote to rejoin.
There is no way the young people of our great country will allow a bunch of geriatric racists to destroy their futures in the wonderful European Union.
Brexit is doomed.

Now now

Maybe your a little too “woke”

Racists? Because they voted differently to you

Hmm you do come over as super tolerant

I suppose you believe in forced re-education?

I agree - the EU is wonderful, and the great majority of young people - with their open minds - are in favour of it. But....I don’t think they will ever let us back in. We are considered troublemakers that cause a wastage of precious EU funds

There is no way normal decent citizens will vote to be governed by racist surrender monkeys from across the channel.
