Congratulations to Exeter Chiefs. A monumental achievement and utterly deserved. The stand out team of the last 3 or 4 seasons and now realised their full potential, what an unbelievable 15 year journey.

Always nice when a true Rugby club triumphs. Exeter and Rugby both winners today.

..From a Saints fan. Not sure whats happened to my team but hopefully competitive again to challenge you soon!

Yes, Sarries nearly beat Racing away in the Semi with just 1/2 their squad. I just hope Rob Baxter can now respect the fantastic achievements of the North Londoners, especially with Exeter boasting 48 professional players. Poor quality refereeing presiding over a poor quality match. Will go down as the most forgettable ECC final in a very long time when compared to some of the other finals over the last few years, last year's being a good example. That was an international standard match. This was mainly dross. Sorry to rain on the Exeter parade, but that's the truth from a neutral.

The TMO also said that the clock didn't restart until five seconds after Owens called "time on" just before the penalty - that is where the extra five seconds came from. Simmonds should have waited another ten seconds or so just to be absolutely sure the clock was in there red before he kicked (he had loads of time available to him), but that is easy to say from the tranquillity of one's sofa.

I am a neutral here but these are 2 teams I greatly admire. A shame there had to be a loser. I did think that Nigel Owens did not have one of his best games. A free for all at the breakdown, missed infringements and how Slade did not sit it out for 10 is beyond me. I appreciate he does not want to spoil the spectacle but even so. I think he may have achieved sacred cow status.

Didn't quite understand BBC synopsis of Finn Russell. Was WG there just to watch him? Why are you attempting to create friction in a squad that hasn't even been picked yet. FR was head and shoulders above any other back on that pitch today. He plays high percentage rugby that WG would never understand, and would never be comfortable coaching. That's why he won't be Lions 10. He's way too exciting.

He's also way too flakey. Racing could have and maybe should have won that if Russell had taken the drop goal opportunity about 5 mins before time. Gold plated chance yet didn't even try.
Cost them the game that's why he should be nowhere near Lions team.

An actual difficult pool with Munster and Saracens. Then Clermont and Saracens again in the 1/4s and semis.

I don't know why there is a such a perception that Racing have bought success. A lot of their players - e.g. Lauret, Le Roux, Chat, Ben Arous, Chavancy - have been around a long time. Fine they have brought in Russell, Zebo and just recently Beale but Exeter have recruited Hogg and Jonny Gray.

Referees have very little discretion with deliberate knock-ons. The WR guidelines say that in the red zone the protocol should always be "yellow, consider penalty try". I think a card is too harsh a sanction for what is almost always not actually deliberate, just an effort to play the ball; in such circumstances, players have almost no time to think and then control their limbs.
624
18/10/2020 08:07:49 2 0

Very much agree, I thought it was very harsh. It was an instinctive move towards a ball he had rights to, if he had caught it there was no offence, so a yellow card for dropping a ball!

Owens was at pains to point out that he doesn't make the laws but perhaps those that do need to differentiate between a conscious action to knock the ball forward and a situation where this isn't the case.

Dominic, Nigel was asking the wrong question to the fourth official - because, while the clock showed there were seconds left, he didn’t realize the clock hadn’t been restarted properly, and the match should have been over. So the fourth official had to explain why the clock should be disregarded in this instance - which Nigel accepted once he heard the explanation.

Great competative match and the best TEAM won. Exeter are a complete team, they've achieved their success by being close, ignoring others and sticking to the game plan. They also have the right manager. At times Racing played like a team, other times they didn't. Flare can get you so far but you have to knit 15 individuals together. Re WG - probably right but that goes for virtually every international coach. They want control not flair - it's just a bonus if a player has it. If Townsend had another 10 of intnl standard he'd trade. It's like history - the army with short hair usually wins

When Sarries go down, doubtless to return, probably not till 21/22 as there'll be no "promo or demo" in any RFU leagues. At which stage the 13 Clubs' owners &/or investors will try again to pull up the drawbridge, circle the wagons, and maybe try to fix their broken business model.

Although a Welshman It was great to see the Chiefs win. However not Nigel Owens best game. R92 try from their hooker was a double movement he touch the ball down first before the line. No try. Sin bin of Francis was really questionable technically he had both hands outstretched but ball only touched one hand he gives deliberate knock on. Retire now Nigel before you ruin your legacy.

It wasn't a double movement, he is allowed to place the ball after he is tackled. I thought the RC deliberate knock on was at least as blatant as the Francis one.
I don't like the automatic yellow for deliberate knock-on, it is often an instinctive reaction, and far more cynical play often goes unpunished.

Well done to Exeter.
The gentlemen from Devon no doubt had a couple of ciders to celebrate afterwards.
Best bit was when Mr, Owen got in a muddle at the end of play. He's a great ref on the field. Just a pillock off the park.

I've always thought if any of our clubs teams get to any final then it has to also be shown on terrestrial TV as a condition of the contract

Sadly not the case, just a few high profile events, like World Cup (wendyball version), FA & Scottish FA Cup Finals, Derby/Grand National, Olympics & Paras but RU, F1, Ryder Cup, Cricket World Cup is a poor second and limited to highlights. Be thankful BT had the good grace, due to covid limitation, to offer to C4, the BBC having RL at Wembley using up their October budget for sport.

Good entertaining game, unusual for a Euro final, but thought R92 played the best rugby but giving Exeter a 14 point start was too much. Finn R played great won the last game v dull and slow Saracens but when you go for it in attack not everything comes off. No reason for the best 10 in Euro rugby to change though.

The difference between the two sides is the Chiefs earned the right to be there. R92 thought they could buy their way there through the cheque book. So glad Chiefs won. It shows why honest hard work and team spirit can achieve. A lesson to us all.

Well done Exeter deserved it .
Not sure on yellow card for Francis.
Thought it was more of a grasp than a slap down .
But justice was done in the end .
Apologies for Nigel Owens loosing his watch .
Hopefully us welsh will open its borders in the near future to Exeter chiefs heroes & applaud them with grace & dignity when they take to the fields of wales . .

Great match and well done Exeter. However who sanctioned both teams wearing light-coloured shirts and shorts? Even one team wearing dark shorts would have helped.

Lived in Exeter for three years. Played rugby so really happy at Exeter's success. But. I like 'open' rugby and am not happy at the modern era accent on rolling maul tries and pushover tries. Also they eat up a lot of game time. I would like to see such tries no longer receiving a possible bonus from a conversion attempt. That would save time and reward 'open' play.

I played rugby over 20 years myself in and around Exeter I know that rolling mall tries are nothing new in fact it IS old school rather than open “champagne” rugby. Bristol are a good example of ‘open’ play but they have a lot of tries scored against them because it is risky. Chiefs have perfected a game plan to score tries and the way they play the ball is in play longer so I don’t see your point

The only reason the clock wasn't in the red when the kick went over was because they failed to restart it when Owens called time back on.

So not restarting was a fair outcome, would have been harsh on Exeter if RC had been allowed to kick off
