1775. The March Hareon 1773. Esmic32 That's a bit cynical. Er...what is? Introducing massive public spending and debt to manage a crisis, when you got into power by saying that was criminal misgovernment, when your opponents did it to bale out the country during the bank collapse...? I think its cynical of anyone to compromise with the purpose of getting to be leader of a party.

I don't mean to sound negative...but what exactly are 400,000 untrained people meant to do? They'll need to be watched and supervised, and therefore just be a distraction to people trying to get on with their jobs. Well meaning, but completely hopeless. Maybe if the government had funded the NHS properly for the past decade, they wouldn't need to get random people off the street to plug the gaps.

@ 1804 In my area at least they are helping with all sorts of things from calling the elderly to check up on them to delivering supplies between rural GPs. This is to free up the people who would normally do these things to do frontline work. I don't think any of the volunteers are expected to do actual nursing.

In a way its like the wartime spirit, a form of socialism with a human face with a capitalist element. Surely this is proof that social cohesion so wickedly torn apart since the 80s is vital for society. So lets build a society fit for heroes...the volunteers etc who will need social housing and above all its vital we go green and engage with nature and not destroy it. Be kind to animals.

It really is an amazing response. I met an American trade negotiator in a queue in the UN building last year. His comment was that wherever you were in the world,if you were in trouble, the first people to volunteer to help would be British or Irish people. Great to see this so amply demonstrated, and get a sense of how poorly we have been served by our horrible and divisive media.

Rightly a lot of praise for the NHS staff. I praise all workers, everywhere Right now, all public sector workers have a job, it’s well paid and 100% guaranteed and with a fantastic pension. Most private sector workers now have a reduced or uncertain income, inferior and decimated pension fund and their taxes are needed to secure the salaries and pension of their public sector counterparts.

Hancock says he’s proud when there 170,000 volunteers, and Boris when it hit 405,000. But here’s my question. Why haven’t Hancock, and Boris, and the other Tories in government volunteered in such extreme times? Very easy to be the “big cheese” and cowardly hiding in safety while hundreds of thousands risk their lives on front line. Not a decent courageous bone in all their bodies combined.

Yeah, right - I bet they have lots of free time at the moment - nothing much to do in their jobs. Other politicians, on the other hand - could be volunteering rather than keeping the benches warm in the HoC

Already DBS checked as a trustee of youth charity, a qualified first aider incl defib, ex army reserve, had HGV, tracked vehicle, minibus & trailer licences - just a short list on top of business & life experience. I've actually signed up as a volunteer, and re problems; some of roles eg ferrying patients, will require a DBS check, some will not involve close contact, eg phone support, all require ID. So there is quite a lot of oversight, and obviously an awareness of vulnerabilities. This crisis shouldn't be a forum for people to air previous hangups - just get out there and help, or stay home and help!

I've noticed the media are saying the infection rate in Italy has fallen off the last few days. However, the same happened in China.. a spike in new cases then often 4 or 5 days decrease in new cases then a spike higher than the last - until about a month ago. Look at the data and you'll see the pattern over a couple of months. I think they're premature in their optimism. I hope not.

The majority of influenza during the winter months is caused by existing strains of corona viruses so it is appropriate to call it a flu albeit a bad one. Up to now we have paid little attention to the deaths of tens of thousands of people each year from respiratory illness. We have yet to make a successful vaccine for the winter flu, maybe this time?

#1799. notmyname I don't think a single thing you say is true. Flu is caused by an influenza virus, not a corona virus. Only 7 corona viruses are known to affect humans. The ones causing SARS, MERS & now CoVID19 have serious effects, the rest just cause colds. The winter flu vaccine is very effective, admittedly not 100% due to virus mutation & uncertainty of strains that will circulate.

Rightly a lot of praise for the NHS staff. I praise all workers, everywhere Right now, all public sector workers have a job, it’s well paid and 100% guaranteed and with a fantastic pension. Why haven’t Hancock, and Boris, and the other Tories in government volunteered in such extreme times? This afternoon I got a text on my mobile, it reads: Stay home, Protect NHS, Save lives which is exactly the same slogan in front of this messy-haired PM (sorry PM, you look tired and must be too busy to comb it) BUT The message I felt to get is like this Stay home to protect NHS who saves lives ???? If we all stay at home when not well, why do we pay taxes to have a NHS ???
